Review of My Father, My Son
ThomasJimP29 August 2002
I personally served on Swift Boats, in Viet Nam, with both Zumwalts. Admiral Zumwalt was our Commander of Naval Forces in Viet Nam. I served with his son at An Thoi, Viet Nam. This movie is extremely accurate. I wish this movie would be released in DVD and shown, again, on TV. Thank you for the opportunity to write my opinion.

Excellent movie! Wish it was available on VHS or DVD!

What a great movie! I was in the Navy during this time and heard a lot of horror stories about the chemical agents being used to defoliate the Vietnam jungle. I am sure that had Admiral Zumwalt been totally informed about the side effects of these chemicals he would have reacted differently. Lets just hope that this movie gets released on video or dvd so more people can understand the horrors of the Vietnam war.

Looking for a copy of MY cousins depicited movie
justdon28 August 2007
Dear viewers,

My first cousin, was Mr. Ken Norton,,,the real Mr. Norton that was Elmo Zumwald Jr.'s best friend from Annapolis. The actual person that is portrayed in the movie shot dead by the sniper,,,in the bottom of the boat.

I had NO knowledge of this movie in 1988,,,I just happened to come home at that time it aired, just happened to turn on the TV and just happened on the correct channel to see the beginning of this movie.(and watched in awe till the end) The actor who portrayed my cousin, looked like him, acted like him,,,and talked like him(my cousin).

I would like a 'copy' of any tape from anyone who has a tape or DVD of this movie for family sake!! I agree with Mr Thomas, this movie is a very realistic movie of the life and times of the era. IF anyone can HELP me locate anyone who served on the same boat,,OR help me obtain a copy of said movie,,,please contact me at 'saramy at ptcnet.net' substituting the proper @ for the at for spam purposes(don).

Needless to say,I think THIS movie should be released again and or available on VCR or DVD. Thank you for your service to America,,, Swift boat sailors!! sincerely--don--

He has two decisions, death or life, and both involve pain.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the few great tearjerkers that focuses on a male character, this is a real life story of the Vietnam veteran who discovers years later that a mission that he was involved in that had certain decisions being made by his father has led to two types of cancer that without extreme radiation treatments will lead to certain death. The treatments are painful in an excruciating way, so not only comes down to the matter of life and death, I'm watching a loved one suffer and that loved one determined to stick around to be there for his family. It's a moral story that is extremely well-written, brilliantly acted and obviously tear-jerking.

With performances by Karl Malden and Keith Carradine leading the film, and the relationship of father and son very loving, it's truly refreshing to see the emotions growing as they face this crisis together, each of them trying to hold it together for the family which includes his wife Margaret Klenck (ironically from "One Life to Live") and two terrific children. Every moment of this film is wracked with emotion as the family learns of the crisis, their preparation for the beginning of his treatments as he enters the hospital and of course the aftermath. Every look between members of this family even without words is excellent acting, very natural and without unnecessary pathos. If there were more families holding together like this one, the world would certainly seem to be a better place, even when tragedy strikes.
