One of the best series in German TV - no: The Best
mime.de18 March 2005
These days I see this exciting, extraordinary serial for the fourth or fifth time. I nearly can speak the dialogs with the actors. But "Löwengrube" again and again is not boring a second. For me the serial, directed very well by Rainer Wolffhardt and written by a master of film-scripts Willy Purucker, is really the best serial-work I have seen in German television. "Die Wiesingers" is good, "Ein Mann will nach oben" is very good, but this Bavarian family-saga is outstanding in every aspect. You see what's happened to three generations of the family Grandauer, ordinary people, which are strong and weak, brave and cowardly, dumb and clever, egoistic and social, sophisticated and simple... just like me and you. Great dialogs, especially in the era when Hitler grows up and police-officer Karl Grandauer in his office must take care for every word he says. Excellent actors, and Jörg Hube as Karl Grandauer must have an "Oscar" for his impressing job. Try to see it! Very big entertainment! Ten out of ten stars.

Reflects perfectly the life in Germany by the end of the 19th century until mid 20th century

Löwengrube tells the story of the Grandauer Family from the end of the 19th century until the fifties of the last century. I was amazed by the perfection of the details representing the different years which this series takes place. This drama gives you a great impression how every-days life must have been in Germany in the first half of the last century. Jörg Hube has done a great job representing the head of the Grandauer Family but all actors have done a great job. As mentioned in other reviews before, Grubes acting is Oscar-worthy. If you watch this series, you learn more about German history of the last century than any history-book can tell you. I am watching this series for the third time. For sure it will not be the last time...

Best German TV series ever

Warning: Spoilers
I just bought the DVD collection and could not stop watching it (all in all 32 hours of film). It is utterly the best thing German TV ever produced. Ten of ten points, there is no flaw. If you want to know how ordinary German people lived, thought and felt in times of WW I and WW II and in the first years after wards, you have to see Löwengrube. Willy Purucker wanted to continue with the series, but BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk) stopped production for money reasons. That's a shame! The characters are so every day people, you may think, you just met them on the street. The big shots of the history of the first half of the past century appear as minor characters in the series. For instance, Grandauer and his son, while watching the Kaiser on a visit to Munich, meet a schoolmate of Grandauer Jr When this boy leaves, Grandauer asks: "Nice boy and so polite. Who is it?" "Oh, that's Heinrich Himmler", answers his son. Or you will meet an Austrian painter, who strays around in the new Löwengrube in search for somebody who can issue him a residence permit. Just for a short moment you see the infamous mustache of this painter.
