- Sheriff Campbell: Do you know who I am?
- John Sikes: I can't say I've had the pleasure.
- Sheriff Campbell: I'm the man who's gonna see you at the end of a knotted hemp before the month's out.
- John Sikes: Did I do something to you?
- Sheriff Campbell: You killed a lady a little while back. Do you remember her?
- John Sikes: I can't keep track of everyone I meet.
- John Sikes: Are you afraid of dying?
- Duell McCall: I don't give it much thought.
- John Sikes: I don't know why you're here, but you ain't going to get what you're after... as long as you got something to lose. My death don't bother me. I ain't got nothing to lose.
- John Sikes: Are you still afraid of dying, McCall? Huh? I want you to feel the bullet because that's going to be me inside you. Take a deep breath, McCall, because here I come!
- Duell McCall: Are you still after the bounty on my head?
- Charlie Cates: No, I gave up that line of work. It's too dangerous.
- Duell McCall: Well, cheating at cards ain't a whole hell of a lot safer.
- Charlie Cates: I wasn't cheating. Cards aren't my main occupation anyhow.
- Duell McCall: What is?
- Charlie Cates: Damn if I know.
- Charlie Cates: You know, I tried most ways of making a living, but they're all too much like hard work. Hell, I wouldn't mind being sheriff... if I could find a town soft enough.
- Duell McCall: Where are you headed?
- Charlie Cates: Nowhere in particular. Just need to make some fast money.
- Duell McCall: I'm needing the same thing. Maybe we ought to go visit your friend Sikes.
- Charlie Cates: Well, that's not a bad idea. John is always looking for an extra gun or two.
- Duell McCall: Why is that?
- Charlie Cates: Because the old ones keep getting killed.
- John Sikes: Every man has got to know his limitations, Carl. I know mine.
- Carl Turner: Well, you ain't God Almighty either.
- John Sikes: Here's your chance to prove it.
- Charlie Cates: You always wake up in such a good mood?
- Maggie, Sikes' Woman: Well, I'm sorry, but the men in this place just don't bring out the best in me.
- Charlie Cates: So why are you here?
- Maggie, Sikes' Woman: My daddy was always shouting about sin and damnation. It made me curious to see what it was all about.
