- Young Matt Banting lives with his Father and Mother, but does not appreciate his Father, or the fact that his Father expects him to work at their gas and repair shop. Matt's dream is to one day be as famous as his idol: the monster-maker Chancey Bellow.
One day, Bellow shows up at the family's garage, and accidentally leaves behind his credit card. Matt personally goes to Bellow's studio to return it, and brings with him some examples of his puppetry and craft skills. The craftspeople at Bellow's studios are impressed with Matt's work, and soon, they have encouraged Bellow himself to take a chance on the young boy. While touring the studio, Bellow shows Matt his most impressive project: an uncompleted, giant animatronic dragon-beast that he calls the Ultra-Gorgon.
To secure a position working for his idol, Matt lies about his age, and secretly stops going to school to work at the studio. While Matt enjoys working at the studio, Bellow notices that he prefers to be a loner, and does not want to interact much with the others on staff. Bellow tries to give Matt some advice, but Matt seems to shrug it off.
One evening, Matt sneaks into the room where the Ultra-Gorgon is held. As he looks around the room, the enormous beast comes to life. Picking Matt up, the beast tells Matt that he has plenty of talent, but to really be the greatest, he must foresake his family and friends to achieve his goals. Matt eventually breaks free from the Ultra-Gorgon, and tries to tell another of the staff that it is alive, but noone believes him.
Matt's Father soon confronts Matt about his missing school to work for Bellow. Matt's Father soon after confronts Bellow, altogether blaming him for Matt's truancy. Matt's Father demands Matt's payment immediately, to which Bellow provides it from a safe in his office. Back at home, Matt has grown despondent upon feeling that his dreams have been dashed.
A few days later, Matt overhears his Father telling someone over the phone about Bellow's studio, and the vault where he keeps his cash. Matt's Father is in trouble with some men, and it seems that tipping them off to this easy money will clear things up with them.
Matt races to the studio hoping to stop the burglars. As they continue to ransack the studio, Matt sneaks into the room with the Ultra-Gorgon, pleading for it to help him. The enormous creature whispers for Matt to hide. Soon after, the burglars enter, and consider selling the enormous beast for scrap. They are then terrified when the beast roars to life, spewing fire and causing them to flee.
As they run away, Matt's Father enters the room, and the Ultra-Gorgon picks him up, asking Matt what he should do with him. Unsure what to do, Matt looks around the room and in a little alcove, sees Bellow with a microphone: Matt's previous encounters with the Ultra-Gorgon were all Bellow's doing. Matt pleads for Bellow to put his Father down, and Father and Son reconcile.
Later on, Bellow drives the two home, as over the roadway, a large, familiar shadow passes over the car.
