Sing!
celseren14 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not ashamed to admit that I love this movie even though it's a bit run down, raw/gritty and has some cringe-worthy 80's dancing not to mention the clothing .. yikes! While preparing for the annual "Sing," talent show; where the seniors compete against the juniors in a musical production; the board of education decides to close the local school & stop the kids from proceeding with their performance. Despite all odds & with the help of their teachers Bracco & LaBelle the students band together with the neighbourhood to hold "Sing" one more time.

While it is completely predictable, when you give into the music and the passion the students & teachers display while they defy the ban on their show, you become hooked.

All the characters are strong, sensitive and ultimately endearing. Peter Dobson (from TV show Lenny) stars as the bad boy turned good after Bracco takes an interest in saving him and technically blackmails him into becoming involved in the production. Dobson & Steen make their "own romance" while being forced to collaborate as the senior leaders. Patti LaBelle can certainly belt out a tune & she does with "Total Concentration" & Cuba Gooding Jr. gives a "knockout" performance! If you like 80's movies and you haven't seen this I would recommended it. The 80's music in the soundtrack is very catchy and while the movie may appear dull in parts the ending is strong. I love the senior class's performance, the choice of song fits perfectly "One more time, SING the song. There's a power in our voices hopeful and strong. Years from now, somewhere down the line, we'll remember and we'll all SING, one more time!"

Great movie

Underrated movie, felt it was forgotten, didn't get the recognition it should of got. It was just as good as Footloose and also had a great soundtrack to it.

Loved it
paranomena130 August 2014
My sister rented it years ago and I laughed, say, "who would name a movie, SING". After watching it, I loved it. I enjoyed the story line, may be predictable but what movie isn't...not too many. It's the way the story goes not the fact that I know what will happen. I enjoyed some of the characters, especially Peter Dobson and Jessica Steen(hotty). I really love the relationship between the mother and daughter especially the scene close to the end. I also enjoyed the Sing shows at the end. I signed a petition online to have them bring it out on DVD. If you haven't already. Just do a search on Facebook for it and it will have a link to the website.

Sing was a real event
peterh210 December 2007
Have a friend who lives in the Bronx and told me that his daughter had participated in Sing at her high school. As far as I know this is (or was) a real event there. I would love to see this one come out on DVD - Id be the first in line to buy it.

It is hard to find good stories like this one that has a basis in fact and refreshing to know that such events really occurred. I am certain that most of us would be surprised by the talent that can be found in our high schools as is depicted in this film. Music and music programs should be continually encouraged in our schools. It is well known that students who excel in music also excell in academics and that is most definitely a worthwhile cause.

A must see for 80's lovers
LuvThe80s24 August 2003
This movie has been a favorite of mine since I saw it for the first time in 1989. If you love 80's movies you'll love this one. It's got somewhat of a star studded cast. Not many people have ever heard of this movie so it's not shocking that an up and coming Cuba Gooding Jr goes unnoticed in his small role. Others included are Miss Patti Labelle and Peter Dobson who would later appear in a few other movies and television roles.

I wouldn't classify this movie as a dance movie along the same lines as Girls Just Want to Have Fun etc. There is a bit of dancing but it's not the storyline.

It's a classic 80s movie. Young rebel without a cause meets sweet innocent young girl. Girl melts guys heart of ice guy makes girl cry but somehow it all works out in the end.

A Must See.

My absolute, all-time, favorite movie!
mickeyfn17 June 1999
This movie has always been my absolute favorite, ever since it came out just before I entered high school. It's the classic "Rebel Without a Cause" story with incredible music and dancing. Just recently, after 7 years of searching, I purchased the soundtrack. I've had it for a few months now and I have yet to take it out of my CD player! It's an incredible story with incredible song and dance. If you've never seen it before rent it from your local video store. It's well worth it!

High notes hit a sour tune in this mediocre SINGing act.
emm31 March 1999
This late-80s musical should pay tribute to the FAME Hall Of Shame. Very cultural in its dancing talents, the decade inspired and represented a generation. Alas, it's time to rediscover this ancient experience once again, and think of SING as a worthless relic that best compares to the days of Elvis (or even FAME). The songs sound like the upbeat adult contemporary format that is worth listening to, but given SING as the title, it has a problem with casting singers with terrible vocals. Patti LaBelle would be the exception due to her mainstream focus in this film. Give this one credit for hard labor on the kids' part in putting on a screen show, saving SING from further decay. One similar rock musical leads to another...and another...and another. Oh, the wasted memories....

good one about high school students
helpless_dancer29 March 1999
I like this kind of show. It reminded me a little of the TV series, "Fame". A high school is about to be closed down by the school board, and the students wanted to put on a final 'sing' concert without the consent of the authorities. Problems arose as one of the boys in the show committed a crime with his older brother. This caused friction with another student in the production. Even with all the troubles, the show still managed to go on. Very good semi-musical.

Loved this movie!!
suzi-king27 July 2005
This is my favorite movie. The characters are believable and the story includes many interesting twists. You have the typical "girl-next-door" who falls for the "bad boy" of their high school, despite her inner voice telling her "he's all wrong, he's not good enough". The songs are catchy and clever (if you listen to the words). From the opening theme song to the gripping "Sing" finale, the music draws you into the emotional roller-coaster you end up on as these students fight the school, the system, and sometimes each other in order to pull off this "One last Sing". This movie is a drama, comedy, romance and musical all rolled into one. One minute you're laughing, the next you're crying. It is similar in style to Dirty Dancing or Stomp.

Let's put on a show, Brooklyn style!
mark.waltz13 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This decade long high school tradition could be Central's last, that is if it goes on at all. This is an old fashioned themed musical with an 80's beat, and there's more than a passing resemblance to the "Sister Act" movies, minus the nuns. Alumni Lorraine Bracco is back at her alma matter, one of the teachers involved in putting on a high school musical as part of a contest, and the students decide on "Romeo and Juliet" as the theme for their show, how original. Bracco uses blackmail to involve troubled student Peter Dobson into getting involved, but the board of education of the city of New York is bored by the underachieving school and announces that it will be closing.

The big movie musical of 1989 that nobody saw and has been pretty much forgotten, this has all the tiresome, overused clichés. Dobson falls for pretty Jessica Steen whose struggling mother Louise Lasser seems embittered and takes it out on her daughter. Bracco's strong accent and actions doesn't make her seem very much like the model teacher, and the show within the show reminds me of many of the flop Broadway musicals I've seen with overstuffed staging and nose pinching awfulness, but that added probably added some realistic giggles for me recalling how audiences get manipulated by style over substance. A big waste Patti LaBelle fans as her one big number only has her singing mostly over action elsewhere. The best moment was the horrible singing for auditions to "Like a Virgin". They may hit the right keys in the end, but the note left me feeling flat.

An all time favorite like "Dirty Dancing!"
Shadyrockstar1422 July 2002
I have loved this movie since I was younger. The only version I have is taped off of tv and it's so old and worn that the quality is pretty bad. This movie is an all time favorite of mine, to me it's a classic like Dirty Dancing. Yeah it is a little cliched, but I always cry at the ending. I just graduated high school the end of May and this movie gives me inspiration, and I loved the senior class's performance of Atlantis, it not only signifies the end of their school, but also of their time together, but they celebrate and rejoice, and yeah I still cried, but it also makes me excited for the time I had and the times yet to come. I think it's a wonderful inspirational message and theme, and nobody second rates themself to impress some stupid boy aka "Grease"-yes a classic favorite of mine, but she gives up all her values and morals for some grease head, plus some of the songs are pretty dirty, that old classic loved so much has a hint a bad moral and theme. ANYWAYS I love Sing in fact right now I'm trying to find a real copy, that's not half black and white with faltering sound, because I love the songs! I have a TAPE of the soundtrack, so I'm not sure how to get a recent copy. AWESOME MOVIE, BACK TO THE BASICS, which I think is important to have in society today.

Good Movie
rlcjr_200226 December 2003
I felt the movie was a good movie. The story of a school being closed in a dying area is not always happy. When the decision is made and the community hasn't had any input, it's a shock and a hardship on many.

For the students of the school to want to go out with a blaze of glory and to do just that is what makes this movie enjoyable.

Sure it was in the late 80's and as with all movies, the music in it reflected the current time.

It is one that I have on video and watch over and over again.

The truest guilty pleasure
musofnite6 June 2002
What could be more fun that watching a tight-jeaned Peter Dobson fall for the innocent Jessica Steen. The songs are catchy, the story timeless, and most of all it's fun. It may not have won any awards, but want to feel inspired, watch Sing, and always "remember that night"

Should Achieve Cult Status
sralyn-7100023 September 2022
Though it bombed at the box office, I was obsessed with seeing it when it came out, and finally got to a year and a half later.

Hannah bore a slight physical resemblance to Susan Sarandon's Janet character in the Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). What girl, watching that famous night club scene, didn't want a pink poorboy sweater, pearls, leather mini and high heels?

Dominic was a 80s Tony Manero type. Tough on the outside, gentle on the inside. Incidentally, as the film progresses, Hannah doesn't become a tough chick like Sandy does at the end of Grease (1978).

We've yet to see this become a Broadway musical comedy, much like Xanadu in 2007.

Great cast,a memorable 80's film.
lomovsky28 July 2004
I've been looking for the DVD...and waited...waited..waited...and I'm still waiting..and no one bothered to produce it.

The casting for these film is excellent. The actors did a great job. The songs are really good...and the dance pieces are wonderful! and the 'Romance' disco scene is one of my favourite scenes in my whole movie collection. Peter Dobson(The Frighteners) in his most touching, charming performance. This is a must watch!

Guilty Pleasures Movie
salluisi0231 March 2004
This is one of the movies that you are embarrassed to admit you like, but you still secretly own and watch whenever you need a cheesy pick-me-up. The styles and dancing are decidedly 80's so it is probably due for a come-back. This movie is fun and the dancing is much better than I would have expected from a B movie. Peter Dobson's character as the strong, sensitive, misguided Dominick makes him all the more lovable. I certainly would dance with him if I could. This movie is recommended if you, like me, are an 80's movie enthusiast.

Wow
Stallonejackson17 December 2022
In 1989, I was 8 but where was I? I watched everything 80's back then. From "Fast Forward" to "Electric Boogaloo" to "Footloose", I watched over and over. This movie was incredible. The story alone was pretty original for It's time too. The dances were perfect and fitting for the time and even now. These moves are timeless. Some magic can never be recaptured. Aww man the soundtrack, wow.

I never paid much attention room to Peter Dobson but he was pretty rad in this role. He had the 80's look down packed too. Jessica Steen and Peter's dynamic was right on. Had I seen this movie when I was 8, I would of definitely rooted for them.

A must watch
lastson-828084 February 2024
I rate this move a 10 out of 10, this movie deserves a DVD/ BluRay release. I put this move up there with 80 classics like Footloose, Karatie Kid, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire.. I was able to track down the Soundtrack. If this move doesn't get a DVD or BluRay status then, I hope it's able to be purchase digitally on Apple TV in the very near future. This move should be in everybody's collection especially if you grew up in the 80's. Why this move has never been release on DVD is beyond me. If you loved Footloose growing up, you will love this move. I still love the old school Brooklyn accent going on throughout the move makes me smile and laugh. Make me miss high school even at my age.

Enjoyable, but silly, cliched movie
tex-4212 April 2001
Sing is sort of the pinnacle of cliched movies. In this case, the movie is based off a real-life event that occurs in many Brooklyn-area high schools called Sing, where the seniors and underclassmen square off in a musical production. This movie centers around that event at one Brooklyn-area high school. The new teacher Miss Lombardo (Bracco) is in charge of the event, and she brings in the senior class bad boy and good girl to work together, even though they do not like each other. You can guess what happens. For fun, the school board makes it known that the school will be shut down at the end of the semester, and it is not allowed to have the Sing event. No reason is given for this, except so the students can rebel and have the event anyways. Completely predictable film, but a very strong performance by Bracco (with a very thick Brooklyn accent)helps a lot to make the movie flow better. Also, look for Cuba Gooding Jr. in a very small role near the end of the film.
