Good job all around
Uthman19 August 2000
I admit I have a weakness for alternate history stories, from ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE to GROUNDHOG DAY to 12:01. Among those greats is this little gem. It's pretty difficult to get through MR. DESTINY without giving a nod of appreciation to each and every cast member, from the goodhearted James Belushi to the murderous Courtney Cox. This movie lacks the gravitas and scale to make it a great film, but it's a fine cheer-up on a rainy afternoon. It's also a great rental for an inexpensive date.

good "what if" tale
mcfly-3111 January 2001
Ok, so it borrows a little from "It's a Wonderful Life", but that was 44 years prior to this film, so why not a new attempt. Belushi is having a rotten 35th birthday. He didn't get his Wheaties, his coffee, and has lost his job. The capper is when his self described "big blue piece of sh**" car breaks down at the end of the day. He heads into an empty bar to call for a tow. While waiting, he's recognized by the bartender (Caine) as the kid who lost the town's championship baseball game 20 years earlier. This gets him to thinking how life would've been if he had won the game. He finds out when, unbeknownst to him, Caine serves up a motion potion in a glass that gives him a mansion, the prom queen (Russo) as his wife, and makes him president of the sporting goods company he's been canned from. Caine later reveals himself as the one who's responsible for this change, but Belushi is not entirely on board. He never fully adjusts, and in a plot development that doesn't kill the movie but is still odd, he tries to court his wife (Hamilton) from his real life, who is now married to someone else. The good move is that they don't spend too much time on it, as basically they rip of "Ghost", with Belushi constantly telling Hamilton things only she could know. It also brings in a hokey dramatic element, as two of his lovers kevetch in the shadows, new wife Russo, and his unbalanced lover Cox. But the keys to the film are the somewhat lengthy beginning, and cheery end. Also good work from the big and recognizable cast, as Belushi is very likable, VERY attractive ladies chosen, and Caine is perfectly easy going as the title guy. Strange that this was Belushi's second film of 1990 dealing with him getting an alternative lifestyle of riches, which was found in "Taking Care of Business". Though similar, both films are on the same level of laughs provided. So check this out for a fun exploration of "what if?"

Charming little sleeper
ODDBear28 January 2007
Belushi plays an average Joe whose bored with the simple life and his uneventful existence. Convinced that his life would have turned out better had he made a home run instead of a miss in a ball game in his high school years, he gets the chance to see how his life would have turned out had he hit that ball. And what a difference it did make.

A simple and charming little sleeper, Mr. Destiny plays it's It's a Wonderful Life scenario in good fashion. James Belushi gives an endearing performance and manages to keep his cool throughout. Linda Hamilton and Michael Caine give good support and an array of familiar faces (Rene Russo, Jon Lovitz, Courtney Cox, Hart Bochner) add to the pleasure. Film is overall free of slapstick humor and plays it straight and it does have some very humorous moments. And a good message as well.

On the whole Mr. Destiny delights undemanding viewers who could do a lot worse than this film.

What a cute little movie !
Alcaminhante20 September 1999
I just watched this movie yesterday on cable, and i really enjoyed it. Ok, it´s not the greatest movie ever, but i would recommend this movie to everyone who wants to see a simple movie, wich in the end makes us think, even if it is for a little while. Everyone has thought even once what if we hadn´t choosed a particular path in our lives, and this is what this movie is about. About the "IF" and about what might have happened. This is a story about a guy, who thought a bad event from his teen years, had ruined is entire life, then he is sent by some spiritual entity to a parallel universe in which that bad thing never happened and he gets to experience first hand what would have happened in his life, if his life had followed this other path. After this he learns that, there are good and bad moments in every ones lives independent of what lifes we live.

And so we have a very good movie. This is one of those movies, that we watch, and quickly forgget, but sometimes when somebody mentions it, we imediatly recall all the details. It is one of those movies that we always remember even if it is from time to time.

Another peculiar thing is MR.DESTINY is filled with familiar faces in every corner. From James Beluchi and Linda Hamilton to Michael Cane ,and we can spend the whole movie recognizing actors, wich is also fun.

So i don´t have much more to say, except that i really recomend this movie.

Very simple, but very good and very cute too. It realy puts a smile on our face by the end of it. So watch it, and be happy.

it's a wonderful life meets Christmas carol?
ritestuf29 September 2005
Belushi at his most ingratiating and Courtney Cox before Friends has a small role. I often think Belushi is under-used in Hollywood and this film role is one of his best. For those of you who watch his TV show, this is a very different and likable character. The movie itself is not earth shattering, nor is the message new but rather it is sweet and endearing. The supporting cast of familiar faces and unfamiliar names is a perfect balance although Lovitz's whining can get tiresome, and Michael Caine's charming spiritual guide has a slightly sinister if not well-meaning edge. Hamilton, as Belushi's wife is unfortunately two-dimensional and one wonders why he married her. In addition, Renee Russo is wasted and not terribly convincing at the "prom queen" who got away. Nevertheless, a nice way to spend two hours.

What if...
planktonrules20 April 2021
The basic ideas in "Mr. Destiny" shouldn't surprise anyone watching. After all, similar plots have appeared on many television shows and movies, such as "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Family Man". So there are no surprises here. Now this isn't really a huge complaint...the film is still enjoyable and it's a nice turn off your brain and enjoy sort of story.

The story begins long ago. Larry (Jim Belushi) is playing the championship game and strikes out....and years later, he STILL blames the direction of his life on this one incident. And, his secret wish is granted when a mysterious and magical guy (Michael Caine) appears and tells him that the past has been changed....he DID hit that ball and won the championship. Now, however, his life is so very different, as he lives in a huge mansion, married the boss' daughter, has a great classic car collection and much more. But what he doesn't have are his old friends and wife....and he misses that more than he possibly could have imagined.

The film is pleasant but also has one problem which impacted how much I enjoyed it.... Jim Belushi's character is simply too dumb at times. While he knows his life is completely different, he often thinks and acts as if it's his same old life....and ends up alienating a lot of people in the process. It really defies common sense when Larry acts this way...as if he really hasn't any concept of change. Why would he trust the man who he knew in his previous life if a devious Satan? Why would he cheat on his new wife when she adores him and treats him like a king? Why would he not try to explain away how oddly he's acting?! It's still enjoyable...but it doesn't make a lot of sense at times.

Everything will turn out just fine!
mdm-1120 May 2005
Jim Belushi is terrific as the "Average Joe" who gets his 15 minutes in "The Twilight Zone". Michael Cane is the mysterious bar tender who not only listens to Belushi's "story", but has a "cure" for all of Belushi's middle class problems: A magic potion to bring about an avalanche of changes in Belushi's life.

Flashbacks show a 15 year old horribly ashamed of causing his High School Baseball Team's Championship defeat. Belushi goes on with his "pitiful life", seemingly happy, but always wondering "what if..." For what seems to be several days, Belushi experiences a "different" life, one of enormous success, admired and hated by others in equal measure.

This is not quite "It's A Wonderful Life", but some elements are similar, and very endearing. The "ending" is predictable, but still satisfying. Watch for a very young Cortney Cox in a bit part as "fatal attraction" -like other woman. A very pleasant film!

A guy walks into a bar...
hitchcockthelegend15 August 2009
Larry Burrows has the distinct feeling he's missing out on something. Ever since he missed a crucial baseball shot at school that cost the championship, he's been convinced his life would have turned out better had he made that shot. Then one night his car breaks down again. Walking into the nearest bar to wait for the tow truck, Larry happens upon barman Mike, who unbeknown to Larry is about to change his life for ever...

The alternate life premise in cinema is hardly a new thing, stretching back to the likes of It's A Wonderful Life and showing no signs of abating with the quite recent Sandler vehicle that was Click. It's a sub-genre of fantasy that has over the years produced very mixed results. Back in 1990 was this James Belushi led production, rarely mentioned when the said topic arises, it appears that it has largely been forgotten. Which is a shame, for it oozes charm and is high scoring in the humour department. We know that we are being led to the ultimate message come the end, but it's still a fun and enjoyable path to be led down. The film also serves notice to what a fine comedy actor James Belushi was. I mean if his style of smart quipping and larking exasperation isn't your thing? then chances are you would avoid this film anyway. But for those engaged by the likes of Red Heat, K-9 and Taking Care of Business, well Mr. Destiny is right up your street. Along for the ride are Linda Hamilton, Michael Caine, Jon Lovitz, Hart Bochner, Jay O. Sanders, Rene Russo and Courteney Cox.

Mr. Destiny is pure escapist fun with a kicker of a message at its heart. 7/10

Charming comedy
RNMorton12 January 2003
Entertaining Jim Belushi vehicle, a modern cockeyed version of It's A Wonderful Life. Michael Caine plays a sort-of angel who lets Belush see what life would have been like if he had "made it big". Jim is at his best with a good story and supporting cast; seems like real chemistry between him and Hamilton. Not an Oscar contender but good warm-hearted fun.

Not bad
alone_onthebeach2 August 2009
I actually like this movie even though I don't fancy James Belushi very much. In this movie, you can actually see several big names on the rise, Linda Hamilton and Courteney Cox namely; Caine's was already big of course. The plot in this movie is simple; its just like that Sliding Door movie. It however was told in a light-hearted manner and I like the comedy moments in it. It made me trying to relive my own important moments in live, eg what if I've taken that girl out for a movie, and not the other etc. It tells us that people around us could have taken different roles in our lives if some minute details were to change. It also reminds us to be careful what we wish for. Life is not always as good on the other side as we think; maybe, what we have now is the best for us, all things considered.

Alternative-history comedy that doesn't quite make the grade...
jrarichards4 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Years ago, I heard a released version of David Newman's theme music for James Orr's "Mr Destiny", and was so touched and inspired by it that I (fondly) imagined the film might be noble/high quality enough to match that. So now I finally got to watch "Mr Destiny", in which the version of the music I heard never actually appears at all (even if there are certain - lesser - variations on that theme!

And that strange circumstance maybe tells one most of what one needs to know about this James Belushi-Michael Caine-Linda Hamilton (and gorgeous Courtney Cox) movie, which - from today's perspective anyway - seems mainly trite, implausible, tame, lame and neither quite funny enough, nor quite thoughtful enough. Allowances might be made for this kind of whimsical fantasy, and I did make them. But somehow "Mr Destiny" does not achieve the cohesiveness and persusasiveness needed to score even in this genre. And in the end that's a pity, because Belushi's Larry Burrows character comes over as reasonably genuine, and there are hints in here of a better movie trying to get out.

But some years have indeed passed, and quite a few films have dealt with the topic of how our lives might look if we had taken a different decision at some point. Indeed, "Back to the Future" was doing that kind of work 5 years BEFORE "Mr Destiny", "Peggy Sue Got Married" four years before - and to far better effect.

To be charitable, "Mr Destiny" is mainly harmless, and does have a certain "feelgood" factor about it, and is occasionally funny. I watched it through, and was adequately satisified, so it can be done. But...

As a general rule, we would now need some special justifications to go back and watch any 1990 movie, and I'm afraid I'm not really able to make a case for giving an hour and a half to this one ... all the more so as even the music was not the exquisite stuff I had hoped for!

I had the Good Fortune of ..
trickrider22 December 2003
getting to work on this film when it was made back in the summer of 1990. Shot partly in the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC and the remaining parts in Winston-Salem. The massive offices of the RJ Reynolds were used in several office scenes and places in around the beautiful city that is know as the tulip capital of the world Winston-Salem! I enjoyed my work although it was exceedingly hard work building all the sets like the Golf of Mexico where Renee Russo and Jim Belushi went on their date. I also had a big hand in decorating the bar where Larry encounters the magical bartender Mr. Destiny. I tacked all those pics on the wall of sports heroes and decorated that phone booth where larry makes a phone call for a cab. I even put my mothers photo at eye level so i could freeze frame it and show it to her when we watched it. I remember dyeing the grass at his old house with green dye because it first had to be sodded(it was a new house in a new development and I guess they leased it for the movie)..then I had to cut that newly laid sod to make it look nice..man that was hard! As far as the movie, when we made it we had no idea what it would be like but after seeing it i fell in love with it because really tells the story of "what if" as good as I ever had seen it, including the great It's a Wonderful Life. I cried so many times

i can't count. I got to meet the wonderful actor Michael Caine while shooting scenes at an old minor league ballpark where Larry's boyhood scenes were played and replayed. I remember after he had done a take an was heading back to his trailer, I ran him down and asked him for a picture and he was quite amiable and said "why not!" He is a good guy and a really natural and forceful actor. I can't say the same for Jim Belushi..he was so full of himself, smoking big cuban cigars and talking loudly so

everyone in earshot could hear his every word. His career never did take off but he has had a decent TV career recently. I would say watch this movie if you ever get the chance. It's wonderful and really heartfelt and real. You can feel Larry's pain after he enters into the new world Mr. Destiny gives him after hitting the homer, and as he wants so badly for people to believe he is not this bad guy everyone thinks he is. They all think he belongs in a nuthouse! But eventually he wins people over but by then he wants his real life back so badly, especially his wonderful wife, played so beautifully by Linda Hamilton..and he wants his dog back! So see it.

What IF?
mm-3926 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler!!! This movie is based on the concept of What If? Of course Mr Destiny will be able to answer this question. The main character goes through a bad day, like many of us, and asks this question. Chaos Theory states a butterfly in China could have an effect on someone over here from a chain reaction. The focus of this movie is based on one event during a baseball game. This event sets into motion one's Destiny; Just like Ashton in "The Butterfly effect" except Mr. Destiny uses comedy over drama. The results make a fresh, somewhat original movie. If one's philosophical are in tune with "The Butterfly Effect" one will likely enjoy Mr. Destiny. I give it a 7 out of 10. Amazing for I have seen the first half of this movie 3 times, and finally watched the ending on TBS.

Sigh
jannar_8522 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
OK, the concept is fascinating BUT... The main character first dislike his life (wife, job and so on) - then when he get this new life he still complaints - and want to go back to the stuff he had before. Why make a full movie out of this? Why not just ask Mr. Destiny to change it back, and so he will, instead of messing up this new life? The main character gives us an answer at one point, but I think it would be ten times better if it was made 10-15 years later and done a totally different way. It was very too sweet at the end of the movie, which seemed very imitated, even though it made me laugh a little. A better example of a similar movie, that I personally recommend more is The Family Man.

Life is definitely worth living!:)
AllisonLVenezio23 February 2001
Living the part of your life you wished were better is something that many of us have wished we could do, but for Larry Burrows, it becomes reality in "Mr. Destiny."

Jim Belushi definitely played his best part in this well-done film about second chances. The character of Larry Burrows is believable and is like many blue-collar workers in America. Burrows is the kind of person that lets everyone go ahead of him, with out trying to get ahead himself.

The chemistry between Belushi and Linda Hamilton as Ellen is very charming, something that many loving couples have. Michael Caine was also superb as Mike, who actually creeped me out the first time I saw this, which was at least 10 years ago. It was amazing to see how contrasted his normal life was as opposed to his "rich life." People liked him in his ordinary life, but he was feared and despised in his "rich life."

In my opinion, this film teaches a very important lesson: Life is what you make of it, and one should be thankful of what they have, and what helped them get there. Destiny is what shapes us, and good things will definitely come our way.

RATING: ****1/2 out of 5. Excellent!:)

A cast to die for in a movie which almost did.
Bing-1811 November 1999
James Belushi plays his usual loveable role as a man that has his past changed by Michael Caine and then has to live with the results.

The supporting cast would now probably cost more to employ than the movie did to make. Courtney Cox of Friends fame, Rene Russo from Lethal Weapon (ironically alongside the woman who parodied her in National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 in the form of Kathy Ireland), Linda Hamilton and Jon Lovitz all turn in good performances in a movie which gives us a glimpse of the stars before they were bankable.

Overall, the movie will not be remembered as anyones best, as its poor showing at the box office suggests, but equally all the cast have made worse. Therefore this is a movie just to simply sit back and enjoy and realise that no matter how bad life seems, it could always be worse.

Thoughts on entire movie… contains inherent spoilers.
CAM-3221 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Mr. Destiny is in many ways similar to Back to the Future, but it is sort of the anti-Back to Future because of its message. In Back to the Future, problems are fixed by going back in time and making changes that result in a greater level of material existence, in Mr. Destiny we are taught to simply appreciate what we already have.

Oddly, the ending muddles this message. After we have learned with Belushi that riches are corrupt and un-endearing, and that a simpler life of love is his choice of life, he is lavished with a six-figure salary and a company Mercedes,. This opens some dark possibilities; let's hope he's learned his lesson.

The movie is very movie-like. Take Belushi's lingering befuddlement at what is going on and all of his plot questions, the answers of which are clearly directed at all of the children watching the movie.

Also the baseball is really embellished for effect. Because of the percentages involved, failing to get a hit (esp. a home run) is a lot different than a truly horrific moment like dropping a pop-up or letting a grounder go through your legs with two outs. That's not to say that someone wouldn't long regret having not gotten a home-run or key hit, but in that situation having a teammate sneer "way to go, BURroughs" and being a town-goat is ridiculous and only realistic if he pulled a Bill Buckner like move. Like I said, you are always very conscious of it being a movie, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Surprisingly, the antagonists are pretty compelling, almost believable, which is rare for such a movie-like atmosphere. Most movies in this mold include a one-dimensional villain who is motivated seemingly only by evil, a cheap character to give the cheap-thrill of being put in his place or humiliated. Such a character is notably lacking in Mr. Destiny. The threatening characters, Courteney Cox and a gem named Niles Pender, are unsavory but somewhat realistic people, driven by understandable motives like spite and money. The key is that their behavior and level of antagonism is reflective of the different actions and personalities of John Belushi, which, in an interesting twist, makes him the villain.

The potential of the Rene Russo character is a little lost, one problem with the weight of the movie is that Belushi is in his altered life as a visitor, and the potential feelings (good or bad) he has built for 10-15 years with his other-dimensional wife (Russo) are not present in him, only implied.

Another thing that isn't addressed is the sheer insult to Linda Hamilton by having him want out of his life. She says to him something like, "If things were so great, why did you want to change?" and he answers with "I guess I didn't realize what I had" which in a way is more insulting in that he didn't say something like, "I didn't think I'd lose you."

Lastly, what was up with the dog? After having a woman try to kill him, and while being chased by the police for a murder he didn't commit and getting fired all over the fact that a man he knows has been murdered, he doesn't "give up" in disappointment until he accidentally runs over his own dog? Then in the end of the move, he is happy (but under control) when seeing his old wife again and getting the great new job, but he's only ecstatic when he sees the dog alive again?

I don't know.
karen-12826 June 2001
An obvious remaking of It's a Wonderful Life, this movie tries very hard to endear itself to us, and it kind of succeeds. Belushi and Hamilton are fine, but again it's the supporting roles that work the best. Michael Caine, Jon Lovitz, Hart Bochner, all are terrific. A pretty good 'date' movie, all told.

Good Fantasy-Comedy!
gwnightscream8 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
James Belushi, Linda Hamilton, Hart Bochner, Jon Lovitz and Michael Caine star in this 1990 fantasy-comedy. Belushi (The Principal) plays Larry, a mild-mannered guy who likes his life, but wishes what it would've been like if he had hit a baseball years prior. On his birthday, he gets his wish when he meets mysterious man, Mike (Caine) who takes him on a magical test-run. Hamilton (The Terminator) plays Larry's wife, Ellen, Bochner (Die Hard) plays Larry's despicable boss, Niles and Lovitz (Big) plays Larry's best friend, Clip. Courteney Cox and Rene Russo are also featured. This is a good film that obviously resembles "It's a Wonderful Life," Belushi is great in it as well as David Newman's score. I recommend this.

This Movie Should Make You Think...
shayboy467 September 2001
This movie is one of my favorites because it makes me think of all the choices I have made and how my life would change if my choices had been different. It plays right into the " Multiple Universe " theory.

The only thing that doesn't ring true is how Larry Burrows ( James Belushi)has such a hard time understanding what is going on, that everything has changed.

Why is it every time you have a mouth full of freeze-dried, your boss walks in on you?
Hey_Sweden12 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
James Belushi delivers an ingratiating performance as Larry Burrows, an average-Joe junior executive at a sporting goods company who just can't live down a pivotal moment in his life. It was 20 years ago, and he was at bat during a high school baseball game and struck out at a crucial moment. Now, he has a pleasant life, married to a union rep (an adorable Linda Hamilton), but he still always wonders about what could have been.

Then, during one bad night (the night of his 35th birthday), he chances to meet magical bartender Mike (Sir Michael Caine), who is somehow able to transport Larry to an alternate reality where Larry hits the winning ball, marries the prom queen (Rene Russo), and is the president of the company. But all is not rosy in this other life. While some things may have changed for the better, Larry apparently did not. He learns that his incredible success came at a price: he turned into a major league slime ball.

Many of us do have cause to wonder how different our lives could be had we made different decisions. Therefore, "Mr. Destiny" is relatable. It may not be nearly on the level of "It's a Wonderful Life", but it IS well-intentioned and offers an entertaining mix of comedy and drama. Much humour is derived from Larry (who still retains his original personality, flummoxed that he could have turned into such a jerk) adjusting to a new life.

Sir Michael is just right in the role of the "destiny-bender", maintaining a light touch at all times. The supporting cast is wonderful and full of familiar faces: Jon Lovitz (as the goofy best friend), Hart Bochner (playing the role of a corporate villain to the hilt), Bill McCutcheon, Jay O. Sanders, Maury Chaykin, Pat Corley, Douglas Seale, Courteney Cox, Tony Longo, and Kathy Ireland (there's certainly no shortage of dynamite-looking ladies here).

While the message of "learning to appreciate what you've got" is stated quite bluntly, the movie IS appealing and hits lots of emotional buttons effectively.

Seven out of 10.

"Bruce Almight" 10+ years before it
fabiohenrique11 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Before "Bruce Almight" there was Mr Destiny, a moral tale with clear inspiration taken from the Dickens classic story. Probably it is much more enjoyable to be seen today (2021) than it was in 1990, as we can enjoy a young cast of Belushi, Michael Cane, Jon Lovitz and Courtney Cox. Of course, the prize goes to an already cougar - but sogourgeous - Rene Russo. Hard to forget the scene of her standing in her underwears and mask before belushi.

CHEER! - (8 stars out of 10)
BJG-Reviews27 December 2021
The stage curtains open ...

"Mr. Destiny" is a modern day fairytale that arguably catches James Belushi at the height of his popularity in cinema. He had just finished "Taking Care of Business" and was about to be in "Curly Sue", both of which are great movies. In this film, however, he stars alongside other notable actors such as Michael Caine, Linda Hamilton, and Jon Lovitz in a fun, "feel good", comedy that still holds up well today.

It is Larry Burrows's 35th birthday, and as he explains it, it was the strangest day of his life. Things are off to a rough start - he isn't able to have his Wheaties for breakfast, there is no coffee when he gets to work, he gets into trouble with his boss which leads to him losing his job, and then his car breaks down ... again. All of this is going on while he is feeling melancholy about a championship baseball game he could've won when he was a youth ... the outcome of which he is convinced, would've changed his life for the better. But, when he meets Mike the bartender, he is given a chance to see what that life would've been like.

It's obvious to see that this movie drew its inspiration from the 1946 classic, "It's A Wonderful Life" - only in that film, our main character got to see what life would've been like if he hadn't been born at all. Whereas, this 1990 film explores the ever persistent question of "What if?". A question that the Nicolas Cage movie, "The Family Man", would address later on in 2000 (another fine movie). We learn that with each outcome, there is always the bad with the good.

I loved this movie. There is an undeniable warmth and charm to it's underlying story as Larry goes through a series of mishaps and sometimes dramatic events to realize that what he had wasn't so bad. In fact, it was a great life. It gave us a nice "Wizard of Oz" ending ("I missed you all so much!) that will leave you smiling and satisfied. "Mr. Destiny" is time well spent and a film I would recommend without hesitation at 8 stars out of 10.

Enjoyable
dave270212 September 2002
Ok the film wasn't going to win any awards and it is pure bubblegum, and it is a modern update on "It's a wonderful life". But it's just come out as a cheap release on DVD and there are a lot worse ways of blowing $13. You get a film that has a surprisingly strong cast but for most they were still a year or two from becoming B list celebs. However it's an enjoyable way of passing an hour and half just don't think too much in it.

Its a Wonderful Life - Remake
mdukas23 September 2001
Remember how in Its a Wonderful life, Jimmy Stewart sees how life in Beford Falls would have been without him? In this movie, Jim Belushi gets to see how his life would have been if he HAD hid that home run back in high school. He would have been married to rich prom queen Rene Russo (excellent!!), instead of labor-representative-woman-of-the-people Linda Hamilton (pre-buff era, but still great looking), He would be rich and live in the Biltmore mansion in N. Carolina, instead of working stiff, with unpaved driveway in middle America. Michael Caine is very good as his "guardian angel", Jon Lovitz is the friend, but not enough to do. Great cast, skinny plot. Of course he would rather be poor than rich, rather eat pizza then French Food. He does get to go back, and then appreciate all his poor friends and family. Perhaps the moguls in their Hollywood mansions get a big laugh by their pools about the message in movies that its SO much better not to be rich! (note Sports Illustrated supermodel Kathy Ireland, in small part as Dad's girlfriend).
