"Eb" and the flow of mediocrity
tarbosh2200015 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
It seems our friend (at least he seems like our friend after spending this much time with him) Cirio H. Santiago can't leave the jungles of Vietnam. So many of his movies are romps in the jungle. Here we go again.

When Wilson (Jim Moss) AKA Ironhand, is stranded in the dense jungles of 'Nam, General Simmons (Carradine) (NOT "General Corman" as he is listed in some sources...remember Counter Measures (1997) and "Zach Silver"?) and his aide Willy send in yet another elite team to rescue the lost and nervous soldier. Meanwhile, the VC is closing in and they lose their radio communication. They have to get to the Laos border to a special meet point. Will they make it?

Unfortunately, Field of Fire AKA Battle Gear retreads a lot of the same ground we've seen before. It's not BAD per se, but it's pretty mediocre. For most of the movie, Carradine barks orders in one room. He does leave that room eventually, and it's a great moment. He also wears a funny Hawaiian shirt. Interesting.

There's also a lot of Vietnam slang. Characters mainly talk about LURPS and their Sandy's while Jolly Greens chase their Ironhand. I know, I'm confused too.

The leader of the jungle group is Duncan (Lottimer), or "Dunc" for short. I believe he was cast because he resembles Bruce Springsteen. Plus he has an interesting name. Then there's Jefe, a token man who speaks Spanish. He uses his language to confuse the enemy. Senator is played by Scott Utley. It's not one of the better 'Nam handles we've heard. Jimmy T is Don Barnes, the African-American who yells loudly while shooting his machine gun. Hawk is Henry Strzalkowski (a man who has been in a lot of DTV action movies but isn't a prominent name). Captain Phat (Joe Mari Avellana) is the evil baddie. Avellana also has a long and storied history as an actor/director in the DTV world.

Also, when the VC talks, there are WAY too many subtitles on the screen. We're pretty sure they're not saying all that stuff. Someone grunts and there's a paragraph.

You'd think a movie with this pedigree would be better. Field of Fire is generic Vietnam stuff with all the standard moments and no surprises and nothing memorable. You could do worse, but this is pretty bland. For better Cirio, check out Final Mission (1984) or The Devastator (1985).

This is better than Terminator 2 and Hard Target combined!

Gosh! How come nobody in my town has seen this masterpiece? Probably 'cause it's too hard to find. Either way, I have taped it off of HBO and love every minute of it. It was actually the second or third movie I had in my collection of over 2,000 videos. And it's still the best action movie I've ever seen, or at least that I can think of. Everybody's always complaining about action movies not having enough action. That's not true with this one...95% action and 5% talking. It still has a plot, too. Here it goes: Major Ironhand goes down during a firefight and he parachutes down with his buddy. So this airforce guy battles some Viet Cong soldiers until a special-forces team of six guys arrives. They battle about 200 of the enemies to rescue him, but then they gotta get him out. Another 200 army dudes are out there, even though Santiago uses the same extras over and over. No problem, though; the squibs are abundant, the music is riveting, the dialogue ain't too shabby, and the action, of course, is non-stop. The ending is tremendous, having more shootouts than Hollywood can offer. My only complaint: David Carradine is limited to a small role, but besides, he saves the day! Jimmy T. is my favorite character, too. Dramatic stuff there. Cirio Santiago, you rule! Thanks, man, for making the greatest action movie of all-time. Platoon sucks compared to this.

You think that Full Metal Jacket is good!? Than i guess you have not seen that film!

It is a very good war film about the Vietnam war and it should be seen by all action-film fan!!! What a shame that this great film is not available on DVD in Germany/Austria! I would love to have it!!! The film was made in 1991. I saw the film in 1996 the 1st time and got shocked about how good the film was made!

The film is about a few U.S. Soldiers that save a pilot that got shot down. The Vietcong is everywhere in the jungle of Vietnam and for a moment it looks like that no one of the guys gets out alive! The film is full with action and gunfights. Just take a look at it!

I have to give this film a 10 out of 10!

One of the best low budget movie ever
Sgt_Barney_Ross3 August 2010
OK i saw it guys it's very good for such a low budget flick, everyone must watch this movie.Non stop action and very spectacular.

I mean they throw like 20 grenades and they shoot probably 30 rocket luncher ,high body count, violent but it was lacking blood sometimes, lack of budget probably.

Hahahaahaaah so many explosions it's incredible, reminds me of the final shootouts of Commando, also it reminds me of Predator,Rambo 2,Strike Commando,Robowar.

Probably one of the best low budget movie ever Caradine has only a small role in this, but he kicked ass at the end.
