A typical German comedy movie
real_schnecki25 August 2003
This movie is insane. It's just so full of super stupid ideas and characters making it real hard for you even to stop laughing for just a few seconds. This movie is naturally not intellectual, but doesn't have to be. I guess somebody who likes this kind of movies will enjoy watching it really much.

Not enough funny moments

Warning: Spoilers
The literal translation for this film's title "Superstau" is a gigantic traffic jam. And this is exactly what this movie is about. Summer holiday season starts and everybody is on their way south in their cars. The inevitable consequence is that everybody ens up in a gigantic traffic jam and we watch some of the families affected and find out how they spend their time while waiting for their journey to continue. Director Manfred Stelzer, who also worked on the script with several others, is in his 70s now and this is probably still his most known work. But I hope it is not his best. This was not a failure by any means and there were some funny scenes, like when Fischer's character realizes he is the one that drove the wrong road and not the other guy. But it was not enough. At some point, the film basically just turned into (self-declared) alpha-males being angry that they can't continue with their drive, shouting around all the time, being greedy for beer (and sex). I would not necessarily say that you need to be German to understand the majority of jokes, but I guess you need to be somewhat similar to the characters in here or at least be a passionate car driver who perhaps has been in a similar traffic jam himself at some point. I am none of the above and that may be one reason why I did not really enjoy this film. Obviously the time after the Fall of the Berlin Wall was a time when car-themed movies were popular. Other works from back then are about Trabant cars or Mantas. This has long been over for now though and I am kinda glad about it as these films did not really do a lot for me. I do not recommend "Superstau" Occasionally funny, but as a whole underwhelming. Thumbs down.

Instant classic - non-Germans will probably not get a single one of the jokes, though

Michael Moore once wrote that you could learn everything you needed to know about contemporary America from "Dude, where's my car". This movie does exactly that for early nineties Germany.

Chock full of every single German stereotype (from the inside) you can imagine, and brilliantly played, too. Probably the last truly original and authentic German comedy that was ever made.

People who have not lived in Germany for any significant amount of time or are under 20 or over 60 will probably not get anything at all from this movie but those who are will probably laugh-out-loud enjoy it non-stop.

I would also like to concur with the other commenter who called this movie non-intellectual: This is social satire at its very best, funny as hell completely without having to resort to the depths of fart jokes and the like.

Oh, and did I mention it's highly quotable, too? Those who've seen it will probably be able to lead entire conversations completely comprised of lines from the movie.
