Low budget, British-set Triad thriller
Leofwine_draca18 November 2023
PHANTOM WAR is a typical entry in Hong Kong's heroic bloodshed genre, with the novel approach of being entirely set in the UK. Future Category III stalwart Ben Ng plays a Vietnam veteran who settles in London looking for a new start with his wife, but familial connections to the Triads spell disaster for the couple. This is a particularly low budget instalment of the genre, although that doesn't mean it's made without merit. The low budget shoot-em-up sequences are certainly violent enough to register, while the presence of a child in the cast always spells misfortune in a Hong Kong thriller. Veteran bad guy actors Alex Man and Phillip Ko add to the mayhem.

The Phantom War, an early Ben Ng star vehicle.
Captain_Couth25 August 2005
The Phantom War (1991) was an early star vehicle for Ben Ng. He stars as a shell shocked veteran who's past keeps on haunting him. No matter how hard he tries to forget his traumatic years in the army, there's always someone or something that reminds him. During the past few years, Ben has been trying to rebuild his life. Everything is going along fine until he learns about a soldier from his company who still has an unsettled grudge with Ben. What's a crazy war vet going to do? Does he take this "new" threat from his past lying down or will he do something about it? Hardcore stuff from a future category III villain.

Highly recommended.
