Garrett A. Morris, who played Martin's boss Stan Winters for the first three seasons, said his contract was not renewed for Martin by Martin Lawrence, meaning he was basically fired from Martin by Martin Lawrence. He stated in 2019 interviews with Netflix and TV One he did not receive a reason as to why he was terminated from Lawrence or the producers of the show. During the middle of shooting season 2 of Martin in 1994, Morris was shot in a robbery attempt in the South Central section of Los Angeles. The assailants grabbed him from behind but Morris reacted quickly as he is a first-degree black belt. One of the robbers fired two shots that hit Morris in his chest and stomach. According to the interviews, the relationship between Morris and Lawrence was fragile and there was often tension behind the scenes. A tragic incident appears to be what led to the final rift.
In season five, Tisha Campbell-Martin filed a sexual harassment case against Martin Lawrence. Based on reports, Lawrence would make advances at her in addition to groping and kissing Campbell during rehearsals and filming, despite her repeated refusals. Over the years, his behavior became more manic and violent. Only the first 10 episodes of season five had shared scenes between the Martin and Gina characters. Additionally, Carl Anthony Payne II had personal issues with Lawrence. His character Cole did not appear in several episodes during the last season.
Thomas Mikal Ford, who plays Tommy Strawn, was the only cast member to appear physically in every episode of the series during all five seasons, for 132 episodes.
In "Homeo and Juliet (1996)," Martin makes mention of the girl from School Daze by Spike Lee being fine. Tisha Campbell-Martin played this character in the film. Additionally, in the episode where Kid 'n Play cameo, Sheneneh asks Kid if he would kiss her like he kissed the light-skinned girl in his movie 'House Party.' Tisha Campbell also played this character.
Jeri Gray, who played Ms. Geri, passed away three months after the show ended.
The episode "Going For Mine" was a backdoor pilot for a spinoff series starring Tichina Arnold as Pamela James. The television series never came to fruition.
