Larry McMurtry, who won an Oscar for penning Brokeback Mountain, earned a nomination for The Last Picture Show and authored books that spawned Emmy winner Lonesome Dove and Best Picture Oscar winner Terms of Endearment, died Thursday of heart failure. He was 84. The news was confirmed to media outlets by family spokeswoman and 42West CEO Amanda Lundberg.
McMurtry — whose son is the singer-songwriter James McMurtry — won the Pulitzer Prize for writing Lonesome Done, which became a popular 1989 CBS miniseries and spawned a sequel and a syndicated series, and was awarded the 2014 National Humanities Medal by President Obama.
McMurtry’s 1975 book Terms of Endearment became the 1983 film from writer-director-producer James L. Brooks. Starring MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels and John Lithgow, the pic was a commercial smash and led all films with 11 Oscar noms. AMC is opening up a third night of original programming on Saturdays, hoping to make inroads on a night the broadcast networks have long since abandoned.
The cable channel is moving its series "Hell on Wheels" to Saturdays for Season 3, which will premiere Aug. 3. The show will be the capper for a day of western-themed programming on the network, including movies, classic TV series like "The Rifleman" and "Rawhide" and miniseries including "Lonesome Dove" and its sequel, "Return to Lonesome Dove."
"A new episode of 'Hell on Wheels' on Saturday night after a full day of western fan favorites is going to be like the saddle on top of the horse," AMC president and general manager Charlie Collier says. "This is a programmer's dream -- to have a genre-specific, 14-hour lead-in to one of your highest rated originals. We are so excited about this opportunity to entertain AMC...

Eliza Dushku has booked her next lead role in a TV project, and it's a little more conventional than the last one.
Dushku, who last starred in Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse," has taken the lead role in a TNT pilot called "Bird Dog." She'll play a small-town cop who winds up with an unlikely new partner -- her dad.
The project comes from veteran TV writer and director Mike Robe (TNT's "Nightmares and Dreamscapes," "Return to Lonesome Dove"), Deadline reports. Dushku's character is a city girl who willingly left that life in the rear-view mirror when she moved to the Pacific Northwest to become a police officer. It's working pretty well for her until her estranged dad, an NYPD veteran, shows up and becomes her new partner.
If it's picked up, "Bird Dog" would be the first cable series for Dushku, who also starred in "Tru Calling" and logged time on two other Whedon shows,...
