Oh please.....

Good grief. Doomwatch meets the Timelords, and there are four of them! Plus Nicola Bryant and Alan Cumming. Take a handful of ex-Dr Who actors, get the budget from petty cash, knock up a poor script and then film it on tape. What could possibly go wrong? I'm sure this will appeal to keen Dr Who fans who lap up anything connected to the series, but for the rest of us it's just lame. The story about an evil company pretending to solve an environmental crisis while actually conspiring to make things worse is good and would have done Doomwatch proud, but the script is limp and the direction somewhat intermittent. Apparently the mighty Tom Baker could see which way the wind was blowing and declined the offer. Sorry to sound so negative, but this is one that should have stayed in the can.

A Taut Low Budget Thriller
timdalton00720 February 2008
In 1993, BBV gathered four of the living actors who had played the title character on the BBC's classic science fiction series Doctor Who together for a special film. But instead of getting Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy to reprise their respective Doctors BBV produced something completely different. Not a Doctor Who story, but a low budget environmental thriller that gave each actor a chance to show something different.

Colin Baker is TV weatherman Arnold "Archie" Davies. In the role, Baker shows off an almost perfect blending of comedic and dramatic abilities as he goes from lowly weatherman to environmental crusader. Baker proves once and for all that he is more then just the colorful jester version of the Doctor. He is a serious actor with some serious ability. Baker isn't the only one to step out form his shadow though. McCoy plays the tireless activist/reluctant ally to Davies and shows off his ability to convince anyone of strange things being real. Davison, who plays reporter Al Dunbar whose ghostly appearances send Davies on his quest, shows off a more serious and frustrated side of his acting abilities. Last, but not least, is Jon Pertwee who pops in every so often to give commentary and words of wisdom as Dunbar's mysterious mentor. Each proves to be more then just the Doctor of their respective TV era's.

The supporting cast is just as good. Nicola Bryant and Michael Wisher (who had also appeared on Doctor Who) step out of their shadows from the series to bring to life two curious characters who push the story along. The former Doctors are further supported by the venomous performances of Bernadette Gepheart and the soon to be discovered Alan Cumming. Rounding out the cast is Nicholas Briggs (who now does voices for the revived Doctor Who series) as Sam Flint, the news editor with divided loyalties. The cast is certainly a mix but they strength to the production.

Considering the low budget nature and short length (around an hour) of the Airzone Solution it is still quite effective. From the opening shots of Dunbar's documentary to the climatic scene at the trade convention, writer Nicholas Briggs and director Bill Baggs keep up the tension and audience interest. If there is a big fault in the film, it's the low budget. While set in the near-future there;'s enough to date the film to the early 1990's, Mostly it is the technology, such as the old computers and floppy disks that look ancient just fifteen years after the film was made. A story like this requires depth, certainly more then the films; low budget could give.

Yet despite the low budget, the film still works From the script and direction to the actors, this film proves that low budgets can't weigh down a good story under good circumstances. While Doctor Who fans might be disappointed in not seeing their favorite Doctor's in action, they can enjoy something different. They can enjoy a taut, low budget thriller that beats most Hollywood movies.

An unlikely group of reporters combine forces to stop a corrupt government from making a deteriorating environment a total disaster.

Sometimes less is more & you have to go back to the basics. Any filmmaker who complains about not having enough money to tell a good story should take a look at some of the work that's gone on @ BBV. No fancy special effects or window dressing, just good old-fashioned characters & story telling to weave a creepy near future faced with a collapsing environment & the evils of overgrown corporations. Each of the former Doctors shines,(especially effective is flip of Colin Baker to nice guy & Peter Davison to abrasive hero), as does a young Alan Cumming, thankfully, an ensemble cast who prove there's no small roles & solid, believe performances can make a viewer forget about the tiniest of budgets. I've seen this about 4 times since it's first release ten years ago & I think it holds up really well as an example that a good story is simply a good story, budget be damned!! Great stuff, Bravo, Nicholas Briggs & co.

Not another Mock-tor who
monkeymonster16 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The Airzone Solution is a micro budget thriller aimed at fans of the classic Doctor Who, but asides from the cast which features four former Doctors and one former assistant it bares very little resemblance to the time traveler. Colin Baker, is cuddly comic weather man who is getting slowly drawn into a huge conspiracy plot - along the way Sylvester McCoy tags along to help him, Peter Davidson gets killed and reappears as a ghost and Jon Pertwee lurks in shadows in his trademark natty attire.

BBV, the company that made this film, have made many productions featuring former Doctor Who cast members in very similar rolls to what they where playing on television, but with their character names changed for legal reasons. This production is a step away from their doctor who-a-likes, or Mock-tor Whos as I like call them, and is a genuinely exciting thriller that just so happens to have four former Doctors in it.

The cast don't let the low budget nature of the film get in the way, or effect their performances, all four of the former Doctors shine in rolls that differ quite wildly from their time traveling alter egos.

So I heartily endorse this film and would urge pretty much every one to watch it at least once, but sadly its not widely available. You wont find a copy in HMV, not even the big ones in London, If you are lucky you can pick up a VHS copy second hand on eBay from time to time.

brief praise for this BBV special

Warning: Spoilers
Considering the budget restraints, Airzone Solution stands out as possibly the BEST of he BBV releases (or at least tied with the Stranger video "In Memory Alone"). Colin Baker, Sylv McCoy, Peter Davison (aka Peter Moffat) and Jon Pertwee work extremely well together, and Nicola Bryant is brilliant (especially when compared to her sappy role of the American companion PERI in Doctor Who).

Fans of Doctor Who will especially enjoy this film, as it is filled with subtle in-jokes and nostalgic moments (no to mention a fan-boy dream-come-true scene involving SPOILER PROTECTION SPOILER PROTECTION). Those without knowledge of Doctor Who may not understand the nostalgia involved in this production, but I feel that A.S. holds its merit as a charming tale of justice in an oppressed, poisoned near-future world, and the average viewer will enjoy it EVEN without prior knowledge of the nostalgia involved.

If you enjoyed the Stranger series, and/or Doctor Who, or if you like british sci-fi in general, I highly recommend Airzone Solution.
