Bonham Carter and Mayall together ?? !!
Bing-1826 April 1999
I must confess that I have never been a big fan of Rik Mayall, but I am of Helena Bonham Carter, so I started to watch this to see how two supposed opposites would work together.

What I found was a surprisingly enjoyable comedy, with Rik Mayall turning in a good, surprisingly reserved performance.

Like "Staggered" with Martin Clunes, this film follows a Stag Night prank which leaves Mayall stranded on a train heading North with no money and the only companion being the stripper from the stag night, played by Bonham Carter.

The film is predictable enough but Bonham Carter brings a depth to her character which lifts the quality of the whole production, and leaves it as a good film to just wind down to after a busy day.

A Modern Fairytale

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, call me a hopeless romantic, but I can't help loving this medium-sized movie.

Rik Mayall departs from his usual over the top persona, and plays a fairly convincing and more serious role here as Neil, who is the victim of a cruel prank by his friends the night before his wedding. Stranded in Scarborough, Neil is desperate to get back to Maidstone in time for his wedding. Julie, the stripper hired for his bachelor party, follows him around, sometimes mocking him, sometimes taking pity on him and helping him out. Slowly the two are drawn closer together.

I remembered seeing this when I was only fifteen, by accident, just zapping from channel to channel, and stumbling on Rik Mayall's face. I was a big fan of Bottom then, so I stuck around. Don't be fooled by Rik Mayall's presence though. This story is far from a plot of a Young Ones or Bottom episode. This is actually quite a sweet story.

The true star of the piece though is without a doubt Helena Bonham-Carter. Her matter of fact portrayal of Julie ("I take me clothes off, 80 quid, I'm not cheap you know") as a tough lower-class girl who's had a rough life is great. Without her, this would have been a very dull short romantic comedy ticking all the cliché boxes. Her performance lifts the movie up to something quite memorable, and touching. She brilliantly delivers the dead-pan dialogue, and slowly she reveals a more vulnerable side of Julie, hidden underneath the tough exterior.

I suppose the filming isn't all that good, nor is the story anything more than average fare. For those reasons, I really can't bring myself to rating this as a great quality production. But even though rationally I can't really defend it, there's something about 'Dancing Queen' that makes it more than just an average TV movie. Watch it if you get a chance.

A bittersweet comedy
Tweekums13 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The night before Neil is due to get married to Sophie his friends Nigel and Donald take him out for his stag night. Nigel spikes his drink and he is paralytic by the time Pandora the stripper performs her act. He was so far gone that he doesn't recognise her the next day; of course he is far more concerned to find himself on a train with a one way ticket to Doncaster and no money or trousers! His friends are waiting at the station to pick him up but they clearly put him on the wrong train; it is non-stop to Scarborough! Once they get there he tries to find a way back to Kent but with no money he can't find a way. He asks Pandora to help but by now she has but the money she was paid on a horse. Stuck in Scarborough he and Pandora try to figure out how to get him back… eventually he gets home of course by then he'll have missed his wedding and it might be too late to save his relationship with Sophie.

When I first watched this I was expecting something more comical as I'd only seen Rik Mayall in straight comedies; this is far more melancholic though. Neil is a decent chap and you can't help but feel sorry for him as he almost has a breakdown, equally under her brash exterior Pandora is a nice girl. Stars Rik Mayall and Helena Bonham-Carter put in fine performances; it was fun seeing the latter playing against type as a Northern stripper with a tattoo of a swallow on her backside! Nathaniel Parker and Martin Clunes also put in decent performances as his 'Hooray-Henry' type friends; two characters it is hard to like… I'm sure many viewers were hoping Neil would thump them for what they did! While this is as tragic as it is comic it is well worth watching if you get the chance.

Sweet, funny, memorable.

This one-off TV movie is one of my all-time favourite films. Scarborough has never looked more romantic and beautiful. Mayall and Bonham-Carter deliver thoughtful, subtle performances and have real chemistry. Above all, this story is simply pleasurable, each scene unashamedly romantic. I love this movie and watch it when I'm down. It's an old fashioned romance for modern people who wish real life could just be a little nicer.

Fully deserves restoring and upscaling
peterjamessharpe23 May 2022
Although cruelly under-length, this is still one of my favourite films of all time and it never fails to bring a lump to my throat.

I remember hearing, many years ago, that it was actually shot to give it the option of being released as a full-length feature film, but after it was edited down to fit the TV format, the extra footage was somehow lost in the studio. I have no way of verifying this, but it would certainly explain the rather hurried conclusion. It deserved so much better.

I can only think that it has never been repeated, simply because of the inclusion of a Gary Glitter song, which fits the scene perfectly and would be impossible to edit out. If it seems stupid simply to ban such an excellent film because of that there's a simple reason - there are some really stupid people in charge of these things.

You would also think that surely there must be a high-quality version of this in existence somewhere; surely they didn't get Helena Bonham Carter involved and then shoot it only on VHS?

In my opinion this is one of HBC's greatest performances; some people criticised her northern accent, but as I said before, there are some very stupid people about. I thought it was wonderful and I couldn't care less if if it can't be pinned down to a particular postcode.

A Favourite
dary1129 November 1999
There is something about this movie that makes it great.

The storyline is a typical Cinderella story in the present day. The wealthy and successful Neal, played by Rik Mayall, is to marry a spoilt snob in the south of England. His friends mess up his Stag Party prank and Neal ends up stranded in the once-famous north England coastal town of Scarborough. His desparate situation leave him at the mercy of Julie's will.

The film is made humourous by the colourful personalities that are only slightly larger than life than most of the people you might meet in the UK. His priveleged background, arrogant manner make him an unlikeable central character who is rescued by the heroine Julie played by Bonham-Carter. The comic style of Mayall brought on by the stress of the situation absolves his character of being totally disliked.

Julie, despite her low-class ways, is endearing and compassionate and her strong role supports the fairy-tale notion that social class and position are irrelevant to love. Perhaps a more unique underlying plot is that the pursuit of wealth creates a greed and snobbery that stand against real love whilst poverty, respect for the individual and community breeds love and a greater awareness of life... perhaps

Had me in tears and still holds charm years later. Story line is good and this could've been extended to a cult classic film

'Pretty Woman' for Englishmen

God, I miss Rik Mayall. This perfect 52 minutes of television is Rik looking and acting his absolute best in a fairytale for modern times.

The plot has been outlined well in other reviews. This will have you laughing and crying throughout. Just sublime TV even after 25 years.

Plot's a little bit but has some charm
neckert75 June 2004
Weighing in at under fifty minutes, "Dancing Queen" really isn't a movie, and it suffers from credibility problems as a result. But thanks to another bravura performance by Helena Bonham Carter, it's worth watching.

Rik Mayall plays Neil, a British yuppie, who's about to get married. At his bachelor party, his "friends" drug him, take his pants off, and stick him on a train to northern England. The woman sharing the compartment is the stripper that performed at the party. Played by HBC, Julie is essentially a feisty working class girl who is "obviously" a better match for Neil than the spoiled rich girl waiting for him at home. Most of the movie is given over to scenes of Neil, with Julie tagging along, frantically trying to get back in time for his wedding. "Dancing Queen" wants you to believe that somehow along the way, Neil falls for Julie. Yet there just isn't enough plot development for that to be convincing.

Nevertheless, Helena Bonham Carter deserves kudos for playing Julie in a very appealing turn as a down-to-earth girl who is completely different from the upper class bluebloods that she's become famous for playing like in "Room with a View," "Howards End," and so many others.

Bottom line: worth a watch but probably not worth buying the tape.

Dancing Queen
Prismark108 January 2023
Rik Mayall plays yuppie Neil who is about to get married. Helena Bonham Carter plays Pandora a northern stripper who has been hired for his bachelor party.

The next day Neil finds himself in Scarborough. His friends Donald (Martin Clunes) and Nigel (Nathaniel Parker) spiked his drink, took off his trousers and thought it would be funny.

Only the train did not stop at the station where they planned to pick him up.

Luckily Pandora is on the same train and she recognises Neil from the night before. Neil panics to get back down south to his wedding, it seems Pandora is the only friend he has got despite his horrible behaviour.

The plot reminded me a bit of the British movie Staggered which starred Martin Clunes whose wedding plans are sabotaged when he is abandoned, naked, on a Scottish island. That came out in 1994.

I wondered if Dancing Queen was planned to be a movie that was pruned to be a one hour comedy drama.

I found it to be all very lightweight, the story was thin and so were some of the characters.

It was an opportunity for Helena Bonham Carter to rough it up as as stripper with a generic northern accent. The type they do not speak with in Lancashire or Yorkshire.

Truly heart-warming, amazing movie..
xx-sadhbh-xx15 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Im not sure if you could call it a movie, but it certainly deserves to be called one.

When Neil is put on a train to Doncaster he ends up on the train with the stripper from his Stag night the night before. When the train fails to stop, Neil panics that he will be late for his wedding.Pandora(actual name Julie), tries to help him, and, predictably, they fall in love. Although, at the beginning it doesn't seem it, this a seriously sweet movie, with a beautiful message. A far cry from Rik Mayalls usual stuff. Its really nice to see him in a decent role, for a change.

Though im not a huge fan of Rik Mayalls, im a HUGE fan of Helena Bonham Carter, and i ADORED this film. Shes absolutely adorable, and her character, Julie, brings depth to the film. The theme tune, Dancing Queen by Abba, fits in perfectly with story in two ways. Julies unfortunate career, and her dancing with the umbrella at the end(BEST part of the movie, its adorable)..

This is a typical portrayal that anyone, can fall in love, anywhere, regardless of class. Its truly heart-warming and one of my all time favourite movies. Shame i can only watch it on YouTube. I recommend it to ANYONE. EVERYONE NEEDS to go watch this movie. Now.

Heartwarming stuff from Rik
Rabical-912 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is my favourite episode of Rik Mayall's anthology series 'Rik Mayall's Presents'. Written by Nick Vivian, and named after one of Abba's Number. 1 hits, 'Dancing Queen' is all about the story of upper class twit Neil, who is due to be married to the prim and proper Sophie. However, on his stag night, his friends spike his drink, tear off his trousers, steal his money and board him on a train to Doncaster with a one way ticket.

Waking up, he finds himself sharing a carriage with Julie, a stripper who was performing for Neil at his stag night ( and whose stripper name is Pandora ). Despite her profession, she is deep down a well meaning, caring and kind-hearted girl, as is evidenced by her sympathy for Neil's predicament. Whilst Neil is stranded in Scarborough vainly attempting to telephone his bride-to-be, Julie provides him with clothes and even tries to get him some food but his temper takes over and he ends up blowing his top unjustly at Julie, which culminates in him getting a bucket of cod heads tipped over his head. However, upon calming down, she forgives him and the two seem to develop a close bond.

Eventually, arriving home, he tries to make amends with Sophie but she is furious with Neil and denounces Julie as a 'piece of s**t!'', Neil then counterattacks by referring to her friend Nigel ( who was responsible for Neil's predicament ) as a 'twat' and a 'wanker' and telling her it was all his fault that things turned out the way they did. After their heated argument, Neil walks out of her life and returns to Yorkshire to be with Julie.

Wonderfully acted and sharply written, 'Dancing Queen' is a little gem that while it still affords us the chance to enjoy Rik's comedic prowess, also shows us that he is a fine straight actor in his own right. Indeed this series was written so Rik could prove to viewers that he was capable of much more than violent slapstick. His gamble paid off. Sexy Helena Bonham Carter is wonderful as Julie and her chemistry with Mayall was a winning one. Also seen in the cast was Martin Clunes as one of the pranksters from Neil's stag night.

'Dancing Queen' was remade a year after this as 'Staggered', which had Martin Clunes in Rik's place but 'Dancing Queen' was the best of the two.

Funniest bit - the 'bucket of cod heads over the head' moment!

Must state I watched this on tv first time it came out,and I had just got in from a drunken night out, something just seemed to resonate with me,hard to describe, but thought it was funny, moving, sad, and what a great soundtrack, just worked for me,have seen it a few times since, and still a really enjoyable TV movie, well worth a watch, great acting from Helena, and must confess I love Scarborough anyway.

Follows a drunken stag night, and what happens afterwards, from the rich to the poor stripper trying to make a living, they get bundled together through a series of events, and adventures, and end up falling in love.
