- Young couple Jonathan and Beth Wheats, who immerse themselves in their hobbies of toy soldiers and painting respectively, are dealing with their insurance company, Cartel, in their house being trashed during a burglary - which had a tragic component - with the only item of value having gone missing being a set of expensive Georgian silver flatware. The investigator sent by Cartel is Roland Copping, who seems to cross personal boundaries in dealing with Jonathan and Beth, and who, especially to Beth, has an annoying habit of playing with a pair of dice, which he uses often to make decisions on their random roll. The crossing of personal boundaries issue takes on a heightened importance for the Wheats when Roland starts to blackmail them over his findings of this case. To save themselves, Jonathan and Beth feel they have no other option but to agree to the conditions laid out by Roland, which nonetheless includes Roland approving their very lucrative claim. But with insurance money in the Wheats' hands, Roland systematically comes back asking for more and more, the Wheats believing that he won't stop until he has bled them dry of everything, they not yet realizing that Roland is more interested in the game, more often than not which includes both physical and psychological torture. To get their lives back, Jonathan believes they have to discover Roland's Achilles' heel which may have something to do with those seemingly important pair of dice.—Huggo
