Unlike most Lifetime movies, there is no "bad guy" in this one, just two couples who are both decent enough until problems complicate things.
Patty is a mom with a great husband, Aaron. She has three kids, and decides to help an infertile couple have a child of their own by the modern method of surrogacy parenting (Bill Davis, the husband of the infertile couple, impregnates Patty). It seems like the Davises would be the perfect parents, with a steady income, lots of caring and a large home... but when Patty goes for her ultrasound, the doctor discovers that she's going to have twins. Suddenly the Davises change from the picture-perfect couple to two demanding opponents, fighting for the custody of the twin girl and abandoning the baby boy.
This movie was based on a true story, and albeit a disturbing one, it was highly dramatized in this movie. The mom, Patty, just cries and cries and acts all dramatic and annoying. The Davises are portrayed as sadistic monsters. In reality, who knows what the circumstances were? Maybe they couldn't afford both babies, or maybe it would be very stressful. They weren't monsters, they just made a big mistake and should have thought the surrogacy method through a little more.
The soundtrack was recycled from a few other 1990's Lifetime movies and the actors aren't the best. I honestly liked "Moment of Truth: Why My Daughter?" much better than this one. A Child Too Many has its effective moments but ends very abruptly and is way too dramatic to take seriously.
