‘Is it autobiographical?’ is usually a question that female novelists can’t escape, but when David Nicholls published One Day in 2009, it also plagued him. Perhaps writing in the romantic genre encouraged interviewers to grant Nicholls honorary-woman status? Lucky him.
One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, whose lives we dip into on the same date each year for a couple of decades. They first meet as students at their Edinburgh University graduation ball in 1988, after which their lives weave in and out of each other’s all the way into their mid-30s. The book was a word-of-mouth hit that was made into a very middling film in 2011, and has since been adapted into a terrific 14-part Netflix series starring This is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod and The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.
Because Emma and Dexter become mildly public figures in the story...

The co-founders of “Made in Chelsea” producers Monkey are stepping down after 23 years with the company.
Sources tell Variety that David Granger and Will Macdonald announced their decision to exit as creative directors of Monkey on Friday afternoon. It’s not yet clear why they’re leaving, but it’s believed they may set up another production shingle in the future.
Granger and Macdonald founded Monkey in 2000 and joined Universal International Studios in 2010 when the company was acquired by NBCUniversal. Since that period, Monkey has grown into a reality behemoth in the U.K., best known for the long-running unscripted show “Made in Chelsea” — now on Season 25 on digital channel E4 and also airing on Peacock in the U.S. — as well as “The Real Housewives of Cheshire,” which is on Season 16 for ITVBe.
The company’s other credits include the BBC adaptation of NBC’s “That’s My Jam,” fronted...

Ian Morris is a journalist who worked on Top Gear from 2003-2006. With Chris Evans confirmed as the show's new host, here's his take on the future of the BBC's global car phenomenon.
Chris Evans is a petrolhead, with a car collection worth many, many millions of pounds, including the most expensive car ever sold in Britain: a £12 million Ferrari 250 Gto, of which only 36 were ever built.
But what the BBC will no doubt be hoping is that Evans can not just replace former presenter Jeremy Clarkson in the car-loving department but also executive producer Andy Wilman, too, bringing some of those ideas that made his early career on shows like Tfi Friday and Don't Forget Your Toothbrush such a revelation on British TV.
Evans has a long past with some of the most innovative TV in the UK. He's going in as not just the talent, but as someone...

Chris Evans is to return to Saturday night TV following an 18-year absence. The 47-year-old presenter is to host 'The National Lottery Live' on Saturday (05.10.13) more than a decade after he fronted light entertainment show 'Don't Forget Your Toothbrush', and admits he has been brought in to lift what is ''barely a show'' from its ''two-dimensional nothingness''. Producers are keen to give the 12-minute programme ''more heart'' as well as ''give publicity to people involved in good causes'' as the cost of tickets rises to £2.
