6½ Not as good as the first but watchable
Musicianmagic15 January 2024
I really enjoyed the first Daughter of Darkness. This follow-up misses the mark but has it's moments.

The first was a combination of comedy, crime drama, horror & sexploitation film. This one leaves out the horror except a little violence. The comedy again is represented by the police using slapstick, mostly the first 15 or so minutes and wasn't funny at all. It was just stupid & crude humor. The worst part of the entire movie.

Again the story is a family found brutally killed and the investigation begins. From there it takes a different path. While the rest is interesting there was a larger emphasis on the sex and sex scenes which are important to the plot. They just seemed to go on too long. A couple of other scenes I personally found upsetting but should have expected it.

The female lead was outstanding. The rest were hit or miss.

I'd still recommend this film. Would just say to fast-forward when the slapstick humor begins.

Bad CAT 3 shocker
Bogey Man11 September 2002
Ivan Lai's sequel to his infamous CAT 3 film Daughter of Darkness (1993) came immediately next year on 1994 and it is titled, of course, Daughter of Darkness 2. The story is identical to the first film: a strange girl is captured and soon a bunch of gory bodies are found in an apartment, and the girl has something to do with it. Idiotic police officers (led by Anthony Wong in part one, but not in this sequel anymore) start to investigate the case, and soon the girl starts to tell her story to the lead police (which is also the most irritating one) and we see the story of hers as a flashback.

This film is plain sick. The jokes are very tasteless, but made me also laugh in amazement as I began to think what's next? Can they invent something even more outrageous and priceless than a girl eating a fruit not knowing it was sunk in the huge cup of human semen, and the girl even liking the fruit's "specially juicy taste!" Yes, this is perhaps the greatest example to tell about this film's spirit, and the group masturbation scene before this is also a "must see" as the police has to get a sample of sperm from all the suspects. But otherwise the jokes are just irritating and very childish, and I think they are that way in purpose, but then I'd like to know does or did the HK audience really enjoy this kind of stuff and its so called humor? Well, when the flashback segment starts (about after the first 30mins of the film), then the humor ends, fortunately, and the more serious part begins.

The story of the girl isn't as sad and touching as in part one, which ends very sorrowfully, unlike this sequel's imitating and totally uniformative ending. The characters are totally shallow here, and all they can do is to make love, speak dirty things and think about revenge when they have been wronged, but of course it is naive to search for some content in a film like this. This film concentrates to show violence and sex in the most graphic fashion, and on that level it somehow succeeds, at least in the sex department. There's plenty of nudity and steamy love making here, so without the gory parts, this would have received the CAT 3 rating easily.

The ending is pretty shocking and violent with numerous stabbings, hittings and other acts of physical violence. It is also pretty unrealistic especially in the family mother's case. The carnage is so immoral and gratuitous that censors all over the world probably love this kind of film. This film is among the worst CAT 3 films I've seen, and by leaving the "humor" off, this would have been much more pleasant and noteworthy film. Now it remains very irritating and often boring film, which turns into a slasher at the end and delivers some mindless violence and terror for those who enjoy this kind of junk. I give this just 2/10.

Daughter of Darkness 2
BA_Harrison16 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's been thirteen years since my IMDb review for Daughter of Darkness, so my memory is a little hazy, but this sequel, which was made the year after the original, seems to follow the same formula: lots of typically wacky bad-taste HK comedy with a little gratuitous sex/nudity, followed by the nasty stuff.

The film opens with bumbling cops investigating the killing of a family, which results in such hilarity as the sexual molestation of a (presumed dead) woman, group masturbation, and the eating of a semen covered mango by a big-chested female cop. I can't say I found any of this particularly funny, but each to their own.

Thirty minutes or so of such silliness and we're finally headed for the more extreme content that Cat III films are renowned for: sexual violence, rape, murder, and more. It all starts as suspect Sau (Yim Lai Cheng) recounts her story to the police chief...

Sau and her husband Ken (Ben Ng) are driving through the countryside when they swerve off the road to avoid hitting some people; instead, they almost run over thug Hung (Ka-Kui Ho), who demands compensation with menace. Friendly local Kun (Dick Lau) comes to the couple's rescue and offers them a place to stay while their car is fixed.

Kun quickly becomes good friends with the couple, but clearly has an eye for the lovely Sau, which is why Ken, impotent as the result of a war wound, asks him to perform a favour: impregnate his wife so that he can have a son. Obviously Kun agrees, especially since Ken is willing to pay handsomely for the task!

Having thoroughly enjoyed himself, Kun decides he wants more of the lovely (and accommodating) Sau, but this time they are photographed in the act by Hung and his son. With proof of Sau's infidelity, Hung demands a large sum of cash from Ken in return for the photos. While they wait for him to find the money, the blackmailers take Sau to their home, where they rape her, to the amusement of Hung's equally wicked wife.

Ken finally arrives with the money and leaves with his wife, who goes to the doctor to find that she is not only pregnant but also infected with syphilis. There's only one thing for the lady to do: in the film's most nauseating moment, Sau takes a coat hanger and performs a home abortion in the shower. Unfortunately, Ken just happens to catch her in the act, and goes to find Hung looking for revenge, which results in him being roughed up and chucked in front of a moving truck.

With Ken gone, Sau turns to Kun for help in evening the score, but when he leaves (after bonking Sau one last time, of course), it is up to her to take revenge, which she does in a variety of nasty ways, including the use of a board of nails, a bear trap, a big knife and a sharp bamboo pole.

In following the blueprint of the original, DOD2 doesn't qualify as an essential classic of the genre (it's no The Untold Story or Red to Kill), but the exploitative sex, nudity, and violence should keep most fans of Cat III nastiness happy for the duration.

6.5/10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb.

Category III Cinema: Daughter of Darkness 2.
Captain_Couth22 August 2005
Daughter of Darkness 2 (1994) was another gruesome case involving a woman who's a sole survivor of a brutal massacre. A local constable questions the woman about her whereabouts and what might have happened the night before. As he gets the young woman to talk, she spins a tale of debauchery, madness and people so vile that you wished that they'll never see daylight again. Why is this woman so reluctant to talk? Who else might be involved in this ghastly murder? How will this bumbling cop get any solid leads or useful clues from this shell shocked woman? Too find out you need to find a copy of this Category III sex and gore fest DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS.

Ivan Lai made this film to capitalize on the success of his last film DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS (1993). None of the main players from the first film appear in this one. The movie is even more depraved and vicious than the first one. If you love Category III films then you need to watch DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS 2. It'll make your stomach churn!!

Highly recommended.

Clothes Hanger-a-go-go!

Warning: Spoilers
Well, usually now I go into CATIII flicks with a pretty high expectation factor. Only a couple out of the bunch I've watched have disappointed me, but Daughter of Darkness II definitely does not disappoint.

The cops discover three massacred bodies, from this point the main cop/detective interviews a woman who he believes is somewhat connected to the case. The interview is really just the woman telling a story to the officer. Movie now goes into flashback mode while she's telling the officer the story. The story that follows is classic CATIII material, with violence, rape, great female nudity, sex....you know the deal.

The movie itself is very entertaining. The story/flashback part is the serious, and better part, and any part with the cops is the silly part. Some people don't care for that humor, but I find it fun and pretty damn silly. Though I am pretty down about the female cop not showing her breasts....she had huge boobs. Shame, shame, shame. Anyways, this is another CATIII winner and definitely check it out if you dig other CATIII material.

Surprisingly Good Cat III "Shocker"
EVOL66622 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I was very pleasantly surprised by DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS 2. This turned out to be a very strong film with plenty of good acting, plot twists, and sleazy sex and violence (the whole reason we watch this CAT III sh!t in the first place!!!).

The story is similar to DAUGHTER 1, some inept cops are called in to a crime scene where an entire family is brutally murdered, and they have to find the killer. The first part of the film is silly, with slapstick humor and gross-out jokes, in the way that HK directors seemed to almost invariably do with these types of film (with only a few notable exceptions...) but after the fun and games, the real story unfolds. A couple meets a nice young man who gives them a place to stay after a minor car accident. The couple end up staying for a few days, and when the husband catches the young man "peeping" on his wife bathing, he makes the man an offer. He confides that he can not get his wife pregnant due to an old war wound, and offers the man money to bang his wife so that they can have a son. The man obliges but becomes emotionally attached to the wife, obviously causing problems all-around. The wife is then unexpectedly kidnapped by a family of weirdos and is held for a high ransom. Husband decides to do something about it, and all manner of CAT III hi-jinx ensue...

DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS is all-in-all a very strong film. The acting is good, the sex and violence is thick and sleazy, and there are some really decent plot twists that make this film quite enjoyable. The downside: it takes a while to get going, and the over-the-top humor in the beginning clashes notably with the feel of the rest of the film. Also notably missing are Anthony Wong and Lily Chung from DAUGHTER 1, but the players in this one do a good enough job. Highly Recommended - personally enjoyed this one more than part 1...8/10
