When the Library of Congress Music Division made the extraordinary discovery of handwritten scores composed by Alex North for two of Anna Sokolow’s dances, Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble Artistic Director Samantha Géracht reimagined the dances using archival evidence and the music. “Slaughter of the Innocents” is Sokolow’s 1937 lament for Basque women suffering under Nazi aerial bombing. “Ballad in a Popular Style” is a wistful lyrical excursion into jazz, first performed in 1936. Both will be performed by members of the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble to the original music, for the first time in 80 years, showing that the creative collaboration...

Scream Factory is looking to have another great week, as they are once again dominating this Tuesday’s home media releases with their Collector’s Editions for both The Entity and Frankenstein Created Woman, as well as a stunning Steelbook Edition of Joe Dante’s Piranha. Synapse Films has also put together a Special Edition for the criminally under-appreciated Slaughter of the Innocents, we’re also getting a Steelbook for Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and for those of you who can’t get enough Ghostbusters releases, there’s a new Steelbook featuring both the first film as well as its sequel, including some unearthed footage that hadn’t been released previously.
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for June 11th include Leprechaun Returns, Hi-Death, The 27 Club, Devil’s Kiss, Final Stab, Captain Marvel, as well as the entire limited series set for I Am the Night,...

Many—maybe too many, looking at this bunch of bone-tired warriors of Av-virtue—were the travels the Ferroni Brigade embarked on all through 2011: oftentimes for festivals all over Europe, sometimes for visits to this archive or that as part of our programming arbeit (to be read with a Japanese drawl). During those months in the dark, we saw a lot—some of which chimed and rhymed with new works we encountered in this multiplex back home or that gallery abroad, on this collector's Steenbeck or in that producer's private projection room (they still exist).
On one of those trips, we were joined by our main Mubi-man, His Kasness a.k.a. the Kasest with whom we plunged one evening into a brainstorming on what The Festival would look and feel like (truth be told: it was more like a communal delirium—but what do you expect from folks sitting...

Back in 1997, Aaron Eckhart's credits included a TV movie, a bit part in a film called Slaughter of the Innocents, and a part in a show called Aliens in the Family. Then he was cast as the lead in Neil Labute's In The Company of Men as Chad, an incredibly misogynistic business executive. Since then Eckhart has made himself a household name, even getting the chance to play one of the most iconic comic book villains in history, Harvey Two Face, in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. While Eckhart and Labute kept a close working relationship for years afterward, the actor hasn't had a lead role in a Labute film since 2002's Posession. Now he's ready to get back to his roots. The La Times reports that Eckhart has signed on to star in The Geography of Hope, the new film directed by Neil Labute. In the film,...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
The terror continued with a spoof of Paranormal Activity...
