One of the best Movie/Games ever
TS_83624 April 2003
I have to admit, I was blown away by Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger! I am not usually a big fan of space-sims, I mean I've played some Freespace here and there but never really got into it. But then I played this and oooooh boy was it good. I've put this review in three catagories:Plot,Gameplay and Acting.

Plot: The Earth Confederation has been waging a 10-year war with the tiger creatures, the Kilrathi. But now they face the reality of losing the war and with it losing Earth and humanity itself. You play Colonel Blair(Mark Hamill) a fighter pilot whose made a reputation for himself through his various missions aboard the "Tiger-Claw". Blair has been re-assigned to be a pilot for the TCS Victory in the war. On the ship, he meets various pilots, captains, etc. Through his missions, Blair finds himself in becoming a major importance in winning the war. There are many plot-twists here and there that'll suprise you as they come. Overall a very well thought out plot. Rating: 4.5/5

Gameplay: The space combat in the game is very fun, entertaining, and challenging. One half of the game has you out in space, flying missions and having a Kiltathi in your crosshairs. The other half has you walking around the TCS Victory, having conversations with the various people on board which are usually about the war, their feelings or on their past. In these conversations, you usually have two choices of what to say(this affects your morale with the person your talking to). This ends up being really fun and it makes you care about your wingmen(unlike in other games). The space combat is fun, fast paced, and man ALIVE is it hard in most of the missions. This is the best part of the game/movie of course. Rating: 5/5

Acting: Mark Hamill does an awesome job of playing Colonel Christopher Blair with his smart-aleck lines while talking to the people on the ship to his taunts while in the cockpit(Example:"Say goodnight kitty!").I like him in this role better then as Luke Skywalker from Star Wars(I know I surprised myself). Then theres various other actors(most who don't really have any acting career). From the great Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Towlwyn(he played the bad guy in Star Trek:Generations), John Rhys-Davies as Paladin(hes playing Gimli in the LOTR movies right now), Tom Wilson(Biff from Back to the Future)as Maniac, a up-beat pilot whos a fan favorite. To Francois Chau as the lovable card shark of a pilot Vagabond and Jason Bernard as Captian Eisen in one of his last movie roles. The acting is superior to any "real" sci-fi film and the script is well written. Rating: 5/5

This is one of the best video games/movies ever and any person who enjoys a awesome space sim with a great plot and sweet actors(MARK HAMILL!!!) should try to find this game now and buy it. You wont be disappointed by its sheer greatness.

Pretty good movie... for a VIDEO GAME
Davidson-228 September 2000
This "game" actually made a better movie than a game. Some of the combat sequences tend to be a touch repetative, but the wonderful feel of being in "a movie" is really, really quite nice. The mission tree allows for multiple endings, so there's the chance that you'll be the dog of the movie instead of the hero. Odd that Chris Roberts would tap adult movie actress Ginger Allen for such a prominant role... but I'll give credit where credit is due, she did a wonderful job acting. If you want to see how multimedia games SHOULD be done, find a copy of Wing Commander III

Praise showered for revolutionary video game
brianirwin29 November 1999
At the time this game came out, it was pretty cutting-edge. It combined a filmed storyline with a space simulator. It was leaps above Wing Commander 1 and 2, old VGA games. Plus it was one of the first games to take advantage of the real life video technology offered by the CD-ROM's arrival. Now-a-days it wouldn't seem so great, but back then it was phenomenal, especially for die-hard Wing Commander (WC) fans. WC 4 and Prophecy both use the basic game play setup developed in WC 3, largely due to its success. Another popular feature is the ability to choose different paths through the game, along with different difficulty levels. All around a great game.

How Wing Commander III pulls you in.
DrWorm22 February 1999
I got Wing Commander III from my dad for my birthday. I had never even heard of it, but I saw that Mark Hamill was in it and that got me interested. The cool graphics, the live-action cut scenes, and the entire fun of space simulation soon had me hooked. Afterwards I have purchased Wing Commander IV and Wing Commander Prophecy and hope to get Wing Commander: Secret Ops soon. Overall, this game is very fun and addictive.

A towering achievement in video games!
starwarstrek-11 September 2002
Four words to start this off: I love this game! I had been waiting a looooong time for the video game industry to create a mostly-live-action interactive video game of good quality and high-calibre acting, directing, and production design. Kudos must go out to director Chris Roberts and his talented team of actors, set production crew, and video game production crew. They did something that had never been done before. They not only created a fully realized, highly entertaining live-action video game. The also did it with a style, flair, and acting performances normally seen only in top-notch Hollywood films. Mark Hamill (of "Star Wars" fame) doesn't simply step into the lead role of Colonel Christopher "Maverick" Blair. He allows it to completely envelope him. It was also great fun to see renowned British actors John Rhys-Davies (of "Indiana Jones" and "The Lord Of The Rings" fame) and Malcolm McDowell (of "A Clockwork Orange", "Time After Time" and "Star Trek: Generations" fame) both hamming it up in their respective roles as General James "Paladin" Taggart and Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn. It was also cool to see Thomas F. Wilson (who played Biff Tannen in the "Back To The Future" trilogy) playing one of the good guys for a change, even though his character, Lt. Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and Col. Blair are rivals, and only sometimes friends with each other. This game is great fun, and highly recommended!!!

A cool game
Bear-889 July 1999
Wing Commander III is one of the few games that effectively mixes full motion video and real gameplay. The computer drawn sets don't look that great but are far better than the computer animation of the previous games. Over all the live action portions of the game are pretty great for $4-8 million. The gameplay itself is also far better than the previous games and since the HUD is uncluttered I consider it slightly better than WC IV in that regard (the HUD in IV has a huge gunsight). Even though I played it with the graphics turned down on my old 486 I consider it one of my favorite games.

Strap yourself in, grease up your trigger finger, and bring your attitude!
Aladdin-31 March 1999
Very engaging game! Fantastic space-flight graphics. Two aspects of the game that made it very interesting for me were the fact that you weren't confined to flying the same spacecraft on every mission, and the different paths you can take to reach the final outcome. The video sequences were well done, and actually added to the storyline instead of just adding fluff. It's still a space-flight combat game, but an excellent one at that.

A grim battle of survival
Black-94 March 1999
This game is a fine example of how one is supposed to use the new media. The story really grabs you tight and the only thing you want is more.

Mankind is fighting a losing war for survival in a galactic war against the evil catlike race Kilrathi. The game begins at the carrier "Tiger's Claw" and evolves quickly to an engrossing story about humanity's finest hour.

I surely can recommend this game!

First time video was used greatly on a computer game
locoman6 July 1999
There was other games that appeared that used video to tell their story, but no game before did to the extent of Wing Commander 3. The first product really worthy of the term "Interactive Movie"

Best Game in the series!
Sabre_Wolf8 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I think of this as the best game in the whole series! Especially with the protagonist finally getting a name and they picked the right man to play Colonel Christopher Blair namely Mark Hamill who is absolutely great! Hamill played the role with warmth, compassion (if you pick good choices for responses when called for), strength, humour and humanity.

Also Tom Wilson played Maniac great as a good source of mild antagonism and comic relief.

Cobra I did not like very much but that's just me. Vagabond was a great character with a good back story and also plausible why he's a 1st Lt. at 38 years old.

Vaquero was a nice character the hope and optimism of his was quite refreshing. Also Flash was a good enough character as he progresses provided you make certain choices.

Also choosing which love interest after a certain point in the game was among my favourite touches to it.

Jason Bernard as Captain William Eisen was a great character played and presented every bit a military officer not to mention a human character who cares about his crew and is not all that distant, the type of guy who knows when to let things slide and when to crack the whip.

Malcolm McDowell was a great Admiral Tolwyn and how he was presented in this game was better and more believable then in the novels.

Also Prince Thrakath returns in this game and he's even better in this and John Rhys-Davies (who also plays Paladin) voices him great! Like I said in my review of Wing Commander 2 I think of Thrakath as being among the best villains in game history! The space combat is brilliant! The game play is wonderful including when not in space combat where you choose your responses! As for the storyline its great! After decades of war of which the Terran-Kilrathi war has been raging for 30-35 years (Wing Commander 2 is 10 years after the game). The Confederation is on the ropes and in the end it becomes a question of "Them or Us.".

Good TV series and great space simulator in One game!
SaintNinja18 December 2018
Everybody are blinded by good or bad "acting" these days. Here we have a standart space mission "target destroyed" game mixed with TV sci-fi series. But the cast for these series is quite strong in terms of "acting". Thomas F. Wilson - the star of Back to The future trilogy - gives high quality perfomance, so the video scenes are far superior than you can expect from computer game or even TV space opera. Other actors create believable athmosphere with passion. Ginger Lynn makes me forget her adult-film past for a moment. She looks great as geek-girl mechanic. Mark Hammil hooks you with his enthusiasm as allways. I should mention great sound design and beautifull costumes of Cat Aliens. The game engine itself is wisely standard or primitive in a genius way. Space fighter simulation is cozy and playable. I like it better than Tie Fighter and X-Wing. Wing Commander 3 and Wing Commander 4 are the best space fighting simulators of the 90s in my opinion. And one of the best games of all time. There are some weak points though. Not weak, but kind of empty spaces. When you choose the wrong path in the game, you can fight the main enemy ship (it's huge). Whether you good or bad pilot, you can't fight back your chances. But it's a very small detail in this fantastic game which I highly reccomend.

The first interactive movie, and still one of the best.
Bekenn7 July 1999
As a long-standing WC fan, I suppose I have a little bias here, but story has always been the largest draw in a game to me. The fact that Chris Roberts and company decided to use live actors IN 1993 shows that they care about story and wanted to make it interesting to watch as well as to play. The actors themselves are no slouches when it comes to acting, and have been in several top-of-the-line feature films.

Granted, the plot is a familiar one, but when coupled with the WC plot as a whole, it takes on a whole new meaning, and real actors are just what was needed to bring that out.

The spaceflight is top-notch... for 1994. Don't expect to see anything even close to today's 3D accelerated colorfests, but do expect to be entertained and challenged.

Entertainment is, after all, what we're after here, isn't it?

it was fun but it can get boring
Ramsey-43 August 1999
Wingcommander is a great game if you like Mark Hamil and other good actors but it can get boring having to sit there with out having to do something for a bit and that can be bad. so it is good but when you get into the movie part it can get bad.

Still the greatest of Interactive Movies AND space sims..
GrandAdmiralThrawn25 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I remember WC3 very well, played that on several setups, from my i486DX2/66 up to faster Pentium II and even Pentium III machines. I remember those impressive, large Kilrathi carriers with their flight decks, that you were able to blaze through with your Thunderbolt bomber, wrecking all those parked Dralthi fighters.

Your wingmen or Captain Eisen talking to you via little Monitors in your cockpit (always played it with the cockpit graphics on, something i miss in more modern space sims), adding to the density of the dogfight or torpedo run.. very nice. And all of that almost being an already lost war made it all the better to fight in! Although it happened not very often in this game, i loved the sound of the TCS Victory's countless laser batteries hammering on another capital ships hull. Or the tense fight against the Kilrathis Dreadnaught, which ONLY happened, when you had failed and experienced the "wrong" ending of the game, encountering wave after wave of Kilrathi destroyers, cruisers, carriers, Dralthis, Paktahns, Vaktoths and so on.

That just being said about the gameplay, i have nothing to add about the comments about the movie parts but that they integrated very well into the game. VERY well. Considering one part being 3D space sim battles and another being actual movie scenes, this is quite an accomplishment. And as most WC fans know today, the movie part was even better than the actual wing commander movie.

But in WC3, it all merges well to an enveloping and dense atmosphere. If you CAN find and play this game on your machine nowadays, TRY it! You'll need a legacy device/dos emulator like VDMSound or DOSBOX or a true DOS / Win98 machine which some old hardware (SB16) though...
