Sex & Nudity

  • Othello and Desdemona are shown having sex on their honeymoon. This does not occur on-stage in the play, but it is depicted in this film. We see them undressing, with a quick glimpse of Desdemona's bare breasts. We then see them from the waste up while they have sex, with loud gasping and motion that goes on for several seconds.
  • Two men listen to a man and woman having sex inside of a carriage. Very little is actually shown, but they can be heard moaning loudly.

Violence & Gore

  • A violent street brawl breaks out, causing great chaos to ensue and at least two people to be seriously injured. One person seems to have been stabbed in the chest and another to have been struck on the head. A good deal of blood is visible.
  • A man is murdered by having a sword stuck through his stomach. We don't see the blade enter his body, but we see him being stabbed and then see blood pouring out of his mouth. We later see him about to die, writhing in pain and covered in blood.
  • The final scene is violent, though it is not very graphic (see description below)

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Iago deliberately gets Cassio very drunk in order to make him irritable and then egg him into starting a fight. This certainly does not endorse this behavior.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The events of the film are intense and disturbing at times, but none of it is portrayed in a graphic manner.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • After being made to believe his wife is unfaithful, Othello has nightmares of Desdemona having sex with Cassio. In one dream scene, you see them having sex with Desdemona's bare breasts visible for about a second or two. However, the scene cuts in and out rapidly, obscuring anything too graphic or explicit.

Violence & Gore

  • In the end, Othello smothers Desdemona to death with a pillow after (falsely) accusing her of adultery. Othello grabs her and pushes the pillow down on her face. We hear her muffled screams for several seconds until she dies. This is sad and disturbing, though it is not graphic.
  • Iago stabs his own wife after she reveals his evil plot. We see a bloody wound on her stomach. She falls down onto the bed by Desdemona's corpse and takes a few last gasps before dying.
  • Othello stabs Iago through the chest, and blood is seen spilling onto the floor. However, it does not kill him. "I bleed sir," Iago says, "but not killed."
  • At the very end, after realizing he has murdered his wife based on a false accusation, Othello commits suicide by stabbing himself with a dagger.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Most of the final scene, in which Desdemona and Emilia are murdered, Iago is stabbed, and Othello commits suicide. This, however, is not overly graphic.
