Good watch, could watch again, and can recommend.

I love getting in the "way back machine" and seeing Rick Moranis movies, and I'm not a big fan of Tom Arnold, but he nails this big dumb bully role.

There is a lot of establishing information, and they work really hard to express a parallel in parents vs children and projecting a "break the cycle" morale on the story, but most of the movie is just Tom being a jerk to Rick. It's almost a Tom and Jerry movie.

I honestly spent a lot of the movie trying understand why Tom wasn't under arrest.

It's not the best movie, but it's reliably good.

If you're feeling an urge for a late 90's movie and this looks interesting, give it a shot.

Not bad...until the ending
Tito-817 April 1999
Much to my surprise, I was actually finding this to be an amusing film for the first hour or so. I laughed more than a few times, and there was a touch of humanity that seemed to fit rather well. Then, for no good reason, the writers tacked on a pathetic ending that left a bitter taste in my mouth. I would even say that this was a good movie for the most part, but the STUPID showdown at the end killed all credibility that had been created. How aggravating.

Has Aged Well.
Movie-ManDan23 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
At the time, Big Bully was a critical and commercial failure. The 4.5/10 on this site even proves how unlike this is. But after rewatching it in a time that has changed a lot since then, it is safe to say that Big Bully is really not a bad film.

Rick Moranis decided to take a vacation from acting in 1997 to spend time with his family. The vacation turned permanent when he realized he didn't miss it. So seeing him in one of his very last films is a treat. It is also good seeing the likes of Don Knotts, Carol Kane, Tom Arnold, and Jeffrey Tambor.

David Leary (Rick Moranis) was a geeky kid who had weird friends, making him the perfect target for bully Rosco "Fang" (Tom Arnold). Rosco picked on David mercilessly up until middle school. Rosco stole a "moon rock" from a traveling science exhibition and David turned him in when he found out he was moving to Oakland. It was the happiest day of David's life: he gets even with Rosco when he gets sent to reform school and he escapes his clutches once and for all. Fast- forward about 25 years later. Rosco is a passive middle school tech teacher living with his trashy family. David is a single parent who hasn't found much commercial success with his acclaimed books. He accepts a creative writing teaching position at his old school. After seeing his son bully a geeky kid, David realizes that the geek's father is Rosco. When Rosco also discovers that David is back, Rosco gets carried away with reenacting pranks from when they were kids. Their immaturity grows and things get out of hand, leading to David getting suspended. After David confesses to Rosco that he turned him in for stealing the rock, Rosco's recent string of hazings turn more serious.

I know that this may be a bit of a long summary, but that's because almost each and every component that makes up this film is nice. Its not great, but certainly not bad. The jokes aren't stupid, just not laughable. In comparison with other recent comedies, this IS great and IS hilarious. But at the heart of the film are two dudes that have unfinished business. I would say that the only major flaw that this movie has is when David and Rosco finally make up. Other than that, I found just about every scene to be believable and the development and chemistry between the two leads to be fine.

I think that remaking this would be good.

Enjoyable Movie To Watch on TV
broadfoot15 October 2003
Big Bully is probably more suited to the small screen than the big screen. Some of the dialogue Tom Arnold spouts out is quite funny. Rick Moranis does an acceptable job in the lead role, even though it seems he's been playing wimpy characters for his whole film career.

The showdown is a little heavy handed (eg. Arnold firing a nail gun at Moranis), but was obviously thrown in to keep the movie from getting too dull.

If it's on TV late at night, watch it...and then go to bed.

Watchable... just
rockdude22 January 2004
I like this film. Not that the plot, acting, script, etc. would worry any kind of awards ceremony on a bad year because they are pretty awful. It's just that the film is watchable at 2am when you need to be bored to sleep by a sappy American movie. That's all I can say about it.

The plot is so transparent and formulaic that a five-year-old could have told you the ending, and has more holes than fine lace. The acting is notably bad on all counts. When the established leads get upstaged by an unknown 10 year-old you have to worry. Rick Moranis plays his usual weedy character and Tom Arnold plays his childhood bully. Not challenging parts and this shows; they aren't even trying.

I, like many others, was bullied at school and found the story interesting in that it showed both sides but the cheezy(TM) subplot involving their children was forced and let down the one saving grace.

All in all, I give this film 2/5. Watchable but certainly not worth missing anything else for.

One of the top 10 worst comedies ever made!
chiefbrody20014 September 2002
It totally baffles me how anyone can give this film 5/10, let alone 10/10. It doesn't deserve 1. What films have some people being watching? Rick Moranis and Tom Arnold should, and are obviously ashamed of being in this horrible movie, that some one mentioned, 'goes nowhere'. Tom Arnold is awful throughout, and clearly has trouble with some of the bad dialogue he gets. It is less his fault more of a fault of director Steve Miner who has done a lot, lot better films in his time. Rick Moranis is bland, and totally unfunny. In fact, was there a funny line in the entire film. The times I chuckled were the badly scripted bits, or how badly a scene was put together, or how awkward Arnold was looking. Okay, okay, some would say this is a children's film but it's message is totally confused. Bully reconciles with the bullied - well, I doubt most kids would ever want to see those that bullied them again, let alone get re-bullied by them in adulthood. The film would simply depress kids. Overall, an awful movie. Bad script, bad direction and bad acting. Suffice to say, I give this 1/10.

Some men can't grow up.
If I wanted to want grown men fight like school children, society would deem that there is something wrong with me. And yet, somehow this movie was made. I have nothing against the two lead actors, but they suck something awful in this suckfest of a film. Terrible plot, terrible dialogue, and just an all-around depressing atmosphere.

I can't delve into too many details lest I spoil this "film" but at one point David orders a beer at a bar and there's a record scratch, and everybody shuts up and looks at him. One guy even hits a pool ball off the table. That's pretty much how I feel about the movie. The pool ball is the point, and the movie is the pocket. This movie is about as table scratched as one could be.

This movie is wonderfully done, and the story is one for the whole family. Another classic from my childhood that still holds up today, and makes me laugh out loud. The characters are genuine and full of heart. It's a family friendly film about how bullying is bad. And although people might have their differences, they could still become friends in the end.

Rick Moranis and Tom Arnold star together as David Leary, and Roscoe "Fang" Bigger. One bullies the other, once as children, and again as an adult. The two actors play off each other very well, and its message about friendship is quite endearing.

It's worth a watch....

probably the worst movie ever
Liz H18 November 2001
this was absolutely my LEAST favourite movie in the history of time. it went NO WHERE, with the most annoying actors. most bad movies always have their minor good parts, not this one. the only reason i watched the entire movie was to see if it was going to have a pleasant ending. it was HORRIBLE. pure crap. :)

Are you serious? Warning: Spoilers
So, okay ElizabethBennett, it isn't the greatest movie in the world. Calling childhood bullies rapists is going a little too far to the extreme don't ya think? Actually, your argument is completely void and holds no truth so I won't even comment any further.

Silly and playful it was. Assuming you aren't a tight-butt who takes everything too dang seriously. IT'S A MOVIE MADE TO MAKE YOU LAUGH, PEOPLE, NOTHING ELSE. I doubt Tom Arnold is a rapist or is representing one either. That is insane. Talk about psychopaths.

No, I am not an ex bully. I actually never got the privilege of meeting one either. But I am sure, that some (maybe some) aren't ex-cons and may have a home and family that they take well care of. Seeing as how someone below, "Doesn't take this lightly.', maybe you should jut lighten up a bit and laugh. Have some unharbored resentments towards a classmate, then it's probably not the movie for you. Otherwise, watch it and laugh. It made me laugh. Along with my husband and nephews and nieces. My grandmother even liked it. (She must be a psychopath for liking the bully movie.) LOL! Have fun!

creepy Arnold
SnoopyStyle1 March 2020
David Leary (Rick Moranis) is a floundering divorced novelist who is recruited to be teacher in his hometown of Hastings, Minnesota. His son Ben is angry and bullies the smaller Kirby. Kirby happens to be the son of the shop teacher Roscoe "Fang" Bigger (Tom Arnold). As children, Fang mercilessly bullied David until David called the police on Fang who stole a moon rock. David moved away and Fang's life spiraled downwards. As an adult, Fang is hesitant and gets pushed around by everybody. However, his bullying personality is awaken by David's return.

In this movie, Moranis is too punchable and Arnold is too creepy. Neither is good. Let's just say that I would buy Moranis being beaten too death or Arnold turning into a serial killer. Mostly, I don't buy Fang's early quiet nature. There is one way to write out of that difficulty. Fang could start by being a reticent loner and claiming to be David's friend. He shows his friendship by rough-housing and then it escalates. There is also no reason for David to push away Victoria's drink. There is no reason why he couldn't prove Fang's prank to avoid being suspended. There is a lot of bad logic. On the other hand, I do like the kids and the bullying reversal. The problem is that Tom Arnold is too powerful and makes this irreversible bad.

Wickedly Funny
dee.reid20 November 2001
David Leary was bullied by Rosco Bigger a.k.a. Fang as a kid. He gets even with Rosco the day he rats him out after he stole the "moon rock". Soon enough David gets his chance to really get even when his parents tell him he's moving. Some years later David(played by Rick Moranis) is grown up and has a son. He returns to his hometown and discovers that Rosco(Tom Arnold) grown up too. Rosco remembers David and soon all hell breaks lose.

I don't understand why it is that people hate this movie. Come on, it's hilarious. Tom Arnold has never been funnier. I think it's kind of strange that David was a victim growing up and now his son is a bully and Rosco was a bully growing up and that his son is a victim.

"He was the ex-drummer of Guns 'n' Roses."
Hey_Sweden7 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Big Bully" has a fairly amusing comedy premise in which newly published author David Leary (Rick Moranis) receives an offer to teach creative writing at his old Midwest middle school. Little does he know that he will once again encounter Ross "Fang" Bigger (played as an adult by Tom Arnold), the bully who made his life miserable as a child. Ross, whose life went way downhill in the interim, is coldly determined to pick up where he left off. In fact, he does add some spark back to his life, taking a savage joy in tormenting David.

Ultimately, "Big Bully" was mildly entertaining for this viewer, with its lively performances and oodles of lowbrow slapstick. For me, the reason why it worked to any degree at all was because of the actors. This movie is VERY well cast, although it doesn't give the radiant Julianne Phillips (as Davids' love interest) or comedy legend Don Knotts that much to do; in fact, Phillips IS largely absent from the movies' second half. Other familiar faces (Curtis Armstrong, Jeffrey Tambor, Carol Kane, Tony Pierce, Stuart Pankin, etc.) are a help.

Written by Mark Steven Johnson, who'd previously had success with his Midwest-set "Grumpy / Grumpier Old Men" comedies, this works in a supposedly clever ironic twist in which Davids' loutish son (Blake Bashoff) is a bully, and Ross' son (Cody McMains) is his victim. What WAS effective was that the resolution of their relationship is what motivates David & Ross to finally bury the hatchet. That final plot twist was awfully predictable, however.

Six out of 10.

Damn good comedy!
Every so often Hollywood takes a serious theme like murder or bullying and tries to make light of it. When that attempt gropes toward the inner pain of dark comedy, the film may have merit. Yet when the focus is on cheap non laughs surrounded by a total disregard for substance, logic, and human decency, the result is most often a bloated, turgid mess like BIG BULLY.

Director Steven Miner wastes the limited talents of all concerned. Rick Moranis is a weedy, nerdy little man who has to relive the trauma of childhood bullying by beefy Tom Arnold. As the film opens, both Moranis and Arnold are in the fourth grade. Arnold plays a blubbery bully that one sometimes sees in a filmed version of a Steven King horror movie. But in the hands of a King based script, the bully is a source of unredeemed evil. Here, under Miner's unsure grasp, Arnold is no more than a walking tub of prepubescent lard who seeks to bully the nerdy Moranis. Now if Miner had tried to make a serious movie about childhood bullying, then BIG BULLY might have had something worthwhile to say about the angst of childhood insecurities.

Now flash forward twenty years. Moranis and Arnold are both teachers in the same grammar school, and Arnold quickly reverts to the bully that he was. What makes this regression reprehensible is Arnold's justification that as a victim, Moranis thoroughly deserved his fate. What then follows is a ridiculous chase scene between prey and predator that offers no lasting insight into either demented personality. Julianne Phillips is a wasted toss in as Moranis' girlfriend. At the end, when director Miner seeks closure, the film ends in the uneasiest of endings, one that satisfied neither the desire for revenge nor one that offers justification for that revenge in the first place.

This movie is nicely done, and Tom Arnold is this really nice and lovable character who (even though he's a bully) you like a lot. A fun movie to watch anytime! Rick Moranis also plays a great character and proves once again he's a great actor.

where was the effort?
niquems4 January 2004
"Big Bully" of just another film with a nice concept and a nice little story-that was simply poorly excecuted. What could have been a thoughtful and meaningful comedy about the effects of childhood into adult life-and carrying over to their own children,is ruined by poor timing, some bad casting, and needless slapstick. What makes alot of these films frustrating is that these mistakes can be so easily avoided by the director, writers, editor, anyone. Why did they decide to make Tom Arnold's character so mean again when his inferiority complex as an adult was 10 times more interesting? Why did the film meander so much between serious and slapstick? Why didn't we see more of a relationship with each man's son(s)? The attractive Julianne Phillips as the romantic interest of Rick Moranis?(uuuhhhhgggg)- Imagine Carol Kane(Tom Arnold's wife)playing that roll instead-its not like they couldn't find her.And someone should tell the writers that an adult holding a 15 year-olds'head to a running power saw and shoving him around in front of his class-mates is NOT funny or interesting- it's irresponsible and needless. All this being said,I actually mildly enjoyed Big Bully for its premise, some smattering of light laughter, and its occasional charm. 5/10.

Not without its charm but very uneven in tone and with this much talent should have been better
spencer-w-hensley11 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw this movie as a pre-teen I loved it. I have been a Rick Moranis fan from the time I was a small child because of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise alone, and his presence has been sorely missed since his hiatus from live action films 25+ years ago.

Fortunately Moranis is planning to return in Shrunk a new rebooted sequel that will be another chapter in one of his most famous movie franchises along with Ghostbusters.

In preparing for the sorely missed actors return I decided to give this a rewatch as I remember enjoying it when I was younger, and while some of it is still funny on the whole it doesnt hold up as well as I thought.

Some people claim that because this was a huge flop it was the movie that convinced Moranis to take his long hiatus. However if you know anything about his personal life you would know that is untrue.

The first problem here is the unevenness of the script. It wants to be a silly, slapstick comedy about a bully and his victim, then tries to be a heartfelt drama about kids being bullied, and then at the end briefly turns into a Cape Fear-style thriller.

This could have been either an effective slapstick or black comedy or profound drama about bullying if they chose one of those genres but unfortunately the multiple genres they attempt dont mesh well together for a 90 minute movie.

It will probably be no surprise that Moranis' character here is essentially the same one he has played in Little Shop of Horrors, Ghostbusters or the Shrunk movies, and while most of his roles have been in that vein maybe with the exception of Spaceballs, and Strange Brew, this script could have taken more chances with his character. At times he does gain confidence that we would not expect from his character but more of that would have made a better movie and there just isnt enough of it.

I also feel Tom Arnold's casting as the bully is also another mistake. Although like many, I am not a huge fan of Arnold and he has participated in his share of bad films, giving bad performances, it's easy to forget that he is still an actor who can be good and does have talent. He demonstrated that wonderfully in True Lies.

However it seems sadly every other movie he made was badly scripted and/or directed and after a while the guy who showed us he had some talent and could act well with the right script and director soon participated in trainwrecks of films that have led him to obscurity.

Here Arnold is ok at times but, his character seems very similar to the very annoying one he played in Nine Months. Imagine that character playing a real bully and that is what you have here. Nine Months was not a good movie and neither was his performance in it so you have some idea that this one isn't much better.

I think Arnold should have stuck to action comedies after True Lies. He proved he could act well in that movie so why not do more similar films? Clearly he had his best success in that genre and could have made more good movies and gave good performances.

I think Bill Murray would have been a better choice for Arnold's part. He can play a jerk and be funny, and it would have been better suited for his comic talent rather than Arnold's.

Julianne Phillips most famous as the ex-wife of Bruce Springsteen has an interesting role as the love interest of Moranis but she disappears in the middle of the movie and her character is extremely underdeveloped and doesnt resurface until the end in which it makes no sense.

Jeffrey Tambor who was wonderful on The Larry Sanders Show and has done plenty of other good work gets one very funny scene as Moranis' eccentric nosy neighbor but he is given nothing to do. He is usually a standout as a supporting character and he is barely in this movie. What a waste of his talent.

Carol Kane shows up as Arnold's trailer trash wife, and she gives the most annoying performance in the film far more than Arnold's. Like Arnold here is an actress who has proved she is talented. Wonderful in Annie Hall, and The Princess Bride and others. Another waste of talent and a very badly directed and scripted role.

Don Knotts has an extended cameo and has a few funny lines but not enough to gain any true genuine laughs.

Curtis Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds, Risky Business, Better off Dead) is actually pretty funny as a colleague who misunderstands Moranis but like the other characters is given very little to do. More scenes with his character could have made a funnier film.

Also written by Mark Steven Johnson who wrote Grumpy and Grumpier Old Men, and who has gone on to direct other good films since, and directed by Steve Miner who has made some good horror films as well as the very underrated Forever Young with Mel Gibson.

This is a lot of talent who collaborated on a project that gave them nothing to do and nothing to justify their capabilities and effectiveness. Johnson's script I think is mostly to blame although let's not forget he is capable of writing good films as with the Grumpy Old Men series.

Like those aforementioned films this takes place in Minnesota and tries to add in some humor about Midwestern culture. But for a funnier and far more entertaining look at Minnesota culture watch the Grumpy films or Fargo released later in 1996 shortly after this film for better films on the same geographic region.

Rick Moranis left us with only a handful of films. If you are enough of a fan of his or any of the other actors it may be worth a look to check this out but while some parts are funny and enjoyable all of the talent in this film have done things to far better utilize the best of their abilities.

Pure Genius. A cinematic journey. Compelling, Emotional, Epic.
imasniperbang-126 February 2007
I would compare this movie with such classics as Gone With The Wind. It puts a true story like Schindlers List to shame. I laughed, and I cried. I also urinated about a tablespoon from laughing. If I were to make a sequel to this classic, I would title it "Big Bully 2: Secret of the Oze." This movie has inspired me to go out and purchase an Evil Kanevil action figure. What really surprises me is the movie is based on a true story. It touched my heart like "Passion of the Christ." If Jesus was resurrected they would crucify him in this movie. Words cannot describe the natural Euphoria this movie makes me feel when I sit down to view it. Can a story get any better? Can humankind continue to create such beautiful things? Movies like this channel the human spirit onto the big screen. This movie should be dubbed as a national treasure so future generations can view the bountyful story of a tale of 2 men, who are at odds with one another, until they learn that they were meant for each other.

Big Bully is a film filled with laughter and tears. It's the story of a man who loses his family and finds himself in the process. It's about choices, how the small decisions we make can affect us for the rest of our lives. Not for fans of Stephen King.

I'm surprised this hasn't done better
UniqueParticle12 February 2019
To me this is a cult classic that will remain in my favorites. It's a story about a kid David Leary who dealt with a bully fang/Roscoe who stole the moon rock I won't say why or what happens but the 2 kids sort of grow up in a way. One becomes a writer and the other remains a bit of a tough guy known as the "Big Bully" - an immature adult with great pranks. This movie was very well written in my opinion by Mark Steven Johnson; it's got some memorable quotes. Steve Minor is a genius at horror among other things which brought some nice thrills in this; it's got some wonderful actors and that lovely 90's vibe that felt so genuinely different. I just all around love this movie and I hope reviewed this decently or at least in a mediocre manor.

Special-K8812 April 2002
An elementary school nerd, plagued by insecurity and the need to fit in, lives in a nightmare at the hands of a big, fearsome bully. Nearly twenty years later he's moved on with his life, has a son, and has made a name for himself as a successful writer. He returns home as a local celebrity to join the teaching staff, but once again encounters his old childhood nemesis who's bent on repeating the same torment despite their advanced ages. Not as bad as it sounds, featuring two likable, enthusiastic leads who provide some occasional laughs, but the frequent dedication to juvenile slapstick grows tiresome after a while. Fans of the actors may not mind. **

Warning: Spoilers
It had been a long time since I watched this movie, and I finally got to refresh my memory. I loved this movie ever since I was a kid, and it's still funny. Moranis and Arnold were perfect together. When David Leary was a kid, he was constantly bullied by Ross Bigger (Fang) When David and his family moves away, he tells the police that Ross stole a moon rock. Years later, David and his son return to town and David becomes the new creative writing teacher. He finds out that Ross is also a teacher at the same school and continues to bully him again. David soon realizes that he must stop running and face his demon once and for all. I highly recommend BIG BULLY!!!

Excellent comedy that you will never get tired of
Catherine_Grace_Zeh21 November 2005
BIG BULLY, in my opinion, is an excellent comedy that you will never get tired of. When David (Rick Moranis) met Fang (Tom Arnold) again for the first time in several years, I got a little scared myself. This is because of what had happened between them years before. If you ask me, the performances were good, the direction was excellent, and the cast was perfectly chosen. However, what Fang did to David, even as an adult, was very childish… especially since he managed to ruin David's date with Victoria (Julianne Phillips). Now, in conclusion, I highly recommend this excellent comedy that you will never get tired of to any Rick Moranis or Tom Arnold fan who hasn't seen it. You're in for a feel good time, so go to the video store, rent it or buy it, kick back with a friend, and watch it.

Is there someone here who hates Rick Moranis?
seinfeldallofan4 September 2006
There is no his picture under his name, and the scores for this movie is far too low.I really liked this movie. The music effect is specially great. What happened to you!Do I have to write 10 lines? I don't have much to say however.Well it's about a man who had been bullied by one of his old classmates. After he came back to his hometown, he found he is still scared by this old classmate "Fang". I myself was bullied by a shameless boy when I was in primary school.I still hate him even now.If I'll meet him again, I'll hit him with a hammer from back.Of course I don't think I will meet him again. And both the man and "fang" had a son. Interestingly his boy was still a "captive" of the fang. The fighting scene is wonderful.
