The star of not one but two hot vampire films talks lockdown, eating caramel cockroaches and why he wants to make a romcom
In Renfield, a comedy slasher about Dracula’s lickspittle victim, Nicholas Hoult eats insects for his super-strength, which is prodigious. He decapitates and disarms with ease, his eyes flash amber as his power grows, but otherwise he plays it with a self-effacing British charm so pure that it’s like watching Hugh Grant rebooted.
In a hotel in central London to talk about the film, he looks – well, first of all, weirdly young. His breakthrough role, in 2002, was Grant’s titular co-star in About a Boy, though he appeared in his first film, Intimate Relations, six years before that, when he was five. So, he has now been in the business for nearly three decades, but, at 33, he has not just the face, but also the self-effacing manners,...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Atomic Blonde (David Leitch)
There’s a bargain underlying the whole of Atomic Blonde, wherein director David Leitch wavers between its more cheeky qualities and its adherence to the conventions of generic spy fare. The film is, by definition, “cool” in every sense. Despite some wonky plotting best described as Diet John le Carré and a heavy-handed soundtrack that occasionally gets in its own way, Charlize Theron plows full...

Every decade or so, Hollywood seems to get an influx of new talent. These actors and actresses appear seemingly out of nowhere, win the hearts of audiences, and before you know it, are the new A-Listers. Some actors achieve fame on television before jumping into feature films, others jump right into the film world and stand out amongst their more recognizable cast members.
As you know, everyone has to start somewhere, and the latest batch of “new” actors in Hollywood have actually been around for quite a while, fighting their way to the top of the cultural zeitgeist before becoming truly successful. I’ve compiled a list of ten of these actors we all know and love, who’ve actually been around a lot longer than you might think…

With starring roles in Warm Bodies and Jack the Giant Slayer – not to mention his A-list romance – Nicholas Hoult's transition from child actor to leading man is complete
• Nicholas Hoult's exclusive fashion shoot for the Observer
Nicholas Hoult has undergone a metamorphosis. He arrives at a west London café with his older sister, Rosie, a gorgeous slip of a girl who he later tells me is also an actor, and to whom he's close. His hair has been buzz-cut, he's got the beginnings of a beard (a beard!) and he seems to have lost a lot of weight, so his eyes are now even bigger than the usual pools of blue that take up most of his face. His cheekbones are ever more pronounced. He looks like a grown-up. A handsome, 6ft 3in action hero of a grown-up.
The physical change makes sense when you consider what he's...
