TollywoodOur heroes don't need any planning or preparation to turn into achievers.Rajeswari Parasa“Next enti?” is a terrorising question that youngsters in the Telugu states face, and variants of this are probably common across the country. What are you going to study next and which job will you land? But though we live in such a perpetually inquisitive society, Telugu cinema heroes somehow manage to escape the well-meaning uncles, aunties and neighbours who ask such questions in real life. They manage to stay jobless for most of the movie but suddenly jump into a career that most of us can only dream of. They can become Chief Ministers, Chief Executive Officers, police officers, collectors, kickboxers, wrestlers and what not overnight. They don't need any planning or preparation to turn into achievers. It can happen over the course of a song or sometimes, not even that much effort is required.

Believe me, it was the most precious moment of my life as an artiste." Slb has now decided to dedicate his next film to his idol. Says Sanjay, "I've said this repeatedly. I say it again. I've learnt filmmaking by listening to her voice. Her voice contains every human emotion delivered at a flawless pitch. But my real inspiration is the way she negotiates the highest notes without showing any signs of strain or effort. That is what makes Lata Mangeshkar what she is." Slb...

Now 77, Bhosle was just 11 when she performed her first song on a movie soundtrack, Chala Chala Nav Bala from Majha Bal in 1943. In the 68 years since, she has provided the on-screen singing voice for generations of actresses unable to capture and deliver a song as brilliantly as she could, singing around 20,000 tunes in 14 languages, as well as recording with Robbie Williams, Michael Stipe and the Kronos Quartet, and lending her name to Cornershop's Brimful of Asha, one of the landmark No 1 hits of the 1990s.
