Hit or miss fantasy satire
bkoganbing8 September 2016
With Olivia Hussey as the voice of the spirits and Charlton Heston doing the narration The Dark Mist is a hit or miss satire of a fantasy film. The trouble is that the players take it a bit too seriously at times and miss the points where they're supposed to mug for the cameras.

One of Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones's sons Patrick is in the lead and title role. He's giving out Cassandra like warnings about the current king Ronald Hale tapping into the dark forces for his power. When his warnings aren't heeded, Patrick goes off and gathers a group of followers as per an ancient prophecy to stop Hale.

The Dark Mist has a few good moments, but someone with a grounding in comedy was needed to get the maximum results. That was what they didn't have at the helm.

Kids should like it though.

Funy escapism.
tom_ashwell4 September 2012
Narrated by Chuck Heston, you can tell he did only one take on some of the entries due to the inflection. Musetta Vander has one short scene, love ya Mu, wish there were more of you in this! Cassidy tries hard, and keep up the effort, but I have to say that Jonathan Fuller's performance makes the film watchable. If you're into D&D and renaissance festivals, you might find this fun. One of my best friends lost his shirt investing in this, but he has since gotten back on his feet. Yes, the producers had done a number of successful films in the past, and everyone is allowed a turkey or two. I just wish it hadn't been this one. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars, but 3 of them are because of John as Malthon/Nohtlam. The bit with the hand that has a mind of its own is a blast. I noticed they fixed some of the soundtrack issues when they re-named the film, and more of a back story would have helped. Still, with a few disjointed scenes and all it is a fun escapism film.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Screen
rsbrandt11 February 2009
Okay, I haven't actually seen this film. But once upon a time I got a phone call from someone representing the producer of "Witchboard" and "Season of Fear" looking for investors for a proposed movie to be called "Lord Protector." They told me they had already lined up Charlton Heston to narrate, and were offering roles to F. Murray Abraham and Michael Rooker. They mailed me a prospectus and everything, but in the end I passed. I wonder if I would have made good on my investment? I really should try to find this and see how the movie turned out. I'd probably be a lot more interested if they'd really ended up with Michael Rooker.

Oh My God, What Tripe
ploveproductions25 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I have spent the last 5 years in the entertainment business and most recently find myself working for the company that made this movie, which is a REAL pity, because I like these folks, I just can't believe ANYONE could possibly make anything as bad as this?!!!! This was crap from every possible angle. From camera work to dialogue to acting to costumes and production design was one of the worst films I have ever seen! The actors in this film looked like they had been taken straight off of a porn that was being shot in the San Fernando Valley and put on a set with an even less talented crew.

I just can't get over the fact that I am sitting on some of the best material I have ever read and contacts within the industry that could help me make my dream a reality and have hit every roadblock possible? Yet the folks behind this spectacle of a film have no problems putting it together and in fact, sleep well after it is released.

Life, what a trip!

Kiddie fare
xredgarnetx29 May 2006
LORD PROTECTOR is kiddie fare, but for whose kids? Obviously shot for television or STV, this amateurish rehash KRULL has several stock characters -- a magician, an assassin, a warrior, a scientist -- on the trail of something or other in order to defeat the Dark Forces about to be unleashed on their planet. Badly written, acted and staged in available California locations like municipal parks and a ranch, LORD PROTECTOR has nothing to recommend it, not even as a time waster. Jay Underwood is the only "name" actor, and most people, especially the intended audience of five year olds, are not likely to remember him from such ancient Disney fare as NOT QUITE HUMAN. A no-name actor playing a magician in an ill-fitting silver wig at least plays it with tongue planted firmly in cheek, while those around him act as if they are in a dinner theater production of KING LEAR. I was hoping at least for a decent action or special effects sequence. Alas, the action sequences are pathetically staged and the few special effects are those old fashioned painted-over cartoon gags we used to see in 1950s and 1960s fantasy flicks, like Bert Gordon's THE MAGIC SWORD. The filmmakers planned a sequel that mercifully never came to be. Often, such cheap Hollywood back-lot productions use a combination of legit and porn actors. I kept myself occupied during the film's seemingly interminable running time, trying to figure which was which in this one. I didn't have much luck.

The Dark Mist
CinemaSerf25 March 2023
When I saw this film, I assumed it had been made in the late seventies - the effects are almost drawn onto the screen; but then I spotted in was made in 1996 and my appreciation really slumped. The first thing you notice is that old Ben Hur himself is the narrator - but why? Did he need the cash? The story, not that it really matters - is a sort of "Conan" meets "Red Sonja" affair with the hero "Rennick" (Patrick Cassidy) and his trusty team of stalwarts setting off to engage the epitome of evil in a battle for the very survival of our planet. Oddly enough, the campy performances; the large-scale paper-maché sets and the merry accompanying score might be more passable if the dialogue hadn't been written by an eight year old with English as his/her fifth language. The sword and sandals fight scenes are all terribly theatrically staged, and the visual effects are similar to those on a game of "Asteroids". Not the worst, but you can see it from here...

The only protection you have is avoiding this.

Warning: Spoilers
All Charlton Heston needed to do for his participation in this film was to show up, record his voice for his few scenes of narration, go home, wait for the paycheck to arrive and get his Union insurance renewed. Other than that, it's basically adults playing dress up, someone showing up with a camera and filming this ridiculous fantasy that is basically a big screen variation of "Xena: Warrior Princess", and I do not mean this as a compliment.

Fans of "Ryan's Hope" and "General Hospital" will recognize Ron Hale as the evil king, and even with the worst of the writing that he had on those two soap operas, nothing can top the hideous script and direction that he has here. Patrick Cassidy is the title character, and I'm not sure even what he's supposed to be doing. It seems to be a contest between most of the men to prove that they have bigger breasts than the women, and it's also a contest as to who can recite their lines the worst.

One of the most hysterical scenes has Cassidy escaping from his enemies in a castle, unfortunately aided by some strategically placed awnings that get him out. The special effects truly are horrible, looking like light coming out of expensive toys, or perhaps a magnifying glass used to expand the size of laser lights. The actors seem far too modern ('90s style) for their parts, a travesty because even some of the worst of the 50's and 60's fantasy films at least the actors look like they were of their time. The film also has very weird lighting makes it look like it was filmed in sepia, but that also makes it look dark and grainy. Not even unintentionally funny, this just had me rolling my eyes from the moment it began.

Junk
Leofwine_draca2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I suppose THE LORD PROTECTOR is an example of the fantasy genre that existed in America before the advent of Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS. It's utter rubbish, in other words. The film is barely above the level of your average indie and involves lots of costumed characters running around in the woods and spouting diabolical dialogue. It seems to be aimed at kids and yet has highbrow aims at times, but the only thing it is is laughable. Charlton Heston and Olivia Hussey contribute some minor voice work but you do wonder why they agreed to take part given the quality.

A Fun Family-Friendly Movie
BOXOFFICEPRODUCT21 August 2002
Charlton Heston does a fine job narrating this fantasy film featuring an other-wordly plot and some neat special effects. Patrick Cassidy (David's brother)stars along with Jay Underwood (The Boy Who Could Fly). The entire cast seems to be having fun, playing their parts with tongues planted firmly in cheek. Of course, this sort of G-rated fare is produced primarily for the kid demographic, but grown-ups can enjoy it too.

Was it meant to be campy?
mcatherinemcf8 April 2008
Either this movie was a pretty funny camp film or the acting was pretty bad (way over the top especially for the male actors). Once I decided to consider it for its camp value, I ended up enjoying it.

The basic plot was okay; a pretty average sword and sorcery story, though the sorcery had elements of technology. Despite a narrator (Charlton Heston!) there was not enough back-story to understand the world but the characters' back-stories were explained as the movie went on. There were a couple of unexplained disconnects that were more or less confusing depending on how integral to the storyline they were.

I watched it free on Netflix. I might watch it again...but I wouldn't if I had to pay for it.

Reluctant hero successfully vanquishes evil.
filene7226 June 2008
The budget on this film was nearly nonexistent, so with this in mind, I think they did a terrific job with what they had. Patrick, who I think is the most attractive in a very attractive family is a great person and I think that comes across very well. All of the other players are appealing as well and proved to be good sports. None of these actors are or were porn stars as was suggested in another review. Artists are just that, dreamers always striving to express themselves in a way that can touch other lives and I can only cheer on these artists in their quest to lift the audience out of drab reality into fun fantasy. It is nice also to see a film that doesn't pander to the least common denominator.

Great fun
l_moonshade30 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Cheesy? Yes. Cliché? Sure. Serious? Not a chance. But, that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed. It's made-for-TV quality, from the script to the special effects, but the characters are fun, and the actors obviously enjoyed playing their parts, which makes it entertaining. There are a few interesting touches that actually make me wish there was more information on the world, such as the almost technological nature to the magic, and the character who's hand has a mind of its own. It's a great family film, too; my husband, 15-year-old daughter, and I all enjoyed it. Sure, I like deep, well-done productions, and sure, this is, really, nothing more than fluff. But, it's entertaining fluff, we laughed and had fun watching it, and that's what counts.
