Predictable and cheesy, but I liked it anyway
DFromATX25 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I know I'm decades late in seeing this movie, but I just saw it last night (2024-01-25) as I was bored and saw it in my streaming recommendations. I figured it would be predictable and cheesy, so if you go into it expecting that, it's a pretty good movie. I'd say it's comparable to a Lifetime movie, so if you like those, you may like this one. Spoiler coming so stop now if you don't want to see it...

**Spoiler: I read more about the story since it was based on a true story. If you've seen it (and because it's obvious), you know they all get rescued, including the dog. This is awful, but I read that in real life, Denise talked her boyfriend into killing the dog the day before they were rescued!! Apparently, he couldn't do it, so she was the one who stabbed the dog (because he didn't want to waste bullets) and she skinned the dog and ate it! Some vegetarian, right?

Too bad about the dog in real life!
skarylarry-9340028 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Pretty good for a television movie. Milano was a whinning creep in this movie. I love her but this movie was beneath her. In real life she (the real life character) skinned the dog and cut him into pieces so they could eat. However, before they could take a bite, they were rescued. Poor pup! Milano mentions killing the dog to eat in the movie but they never did. It is a miracle they both made it. I liked his attitude that he refused to kill Newman to eat. The acting wasn't bad at all. Milano sacrificed her looks in this movie, not looking like herself. This movie is worth a look. Was a real harrowing experience they went through.

Good TV flick for the Milano fan.
haskpts20 August 2006
Ex-policeman Roger Lewis (Cameron Bancroft) and ex-waitress Denise Harris (Alyssa Milano) believe they have been given the chance of a lifetime when run down entrepreneur Wylie Bennett (Duncan Fraser) approaches them with a business proposition filled with wealth and adventure. With money on their minds, they leave their old lives behind to embark on an Alaskan journey to investigate an old deserted gold mine for forgotten treasures. Although the fortune is to be split three ways, Wylie leaves the dirty work to the ambitious pair with a promise to deliver food and supplies. When a violent storm strikes and supplies run dry, the starving and inexperienced explorers valiantly battle the treacherous Alaskan coast in a struggle for survival. With prospects for rescue dwindling by the hour, the two manage to devise one last plan that will either save their lives or leave them stranded in an endless wilderness of ice and snow.

It Could Have Been A Good Movie...
jsrobinson13218 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Sadly this movie has made it to one of my all time worst movie experiences and not because of the acting or locations - acting was good when you think of the script they had to deal with and the locations were just spectacular - but the script and believability for the drama happening, as well as the research done into the location, was absolutely appalling and laughable. I've been to Alaska in summer - mainly along the coastline and up into the interior mountains into the Yukon - and even then it was freezing a lot of the time. The movie was supposedly filmed in the middle of December - midwinter - but there was no snow along the coastline and not even full snow inland when the ocean should have been teeming with iceberg chunks from when a glacier carves and pockets of snow along the shoreline. Added to that, there were full days of sunlight when in reality there is very limited sunlight in the dead of winter in that part of the world. The character of Denise surviving a winter snowstorm in a tank top, along with falling through fresh snow into a freezing lake and being in it for several minutes as she fights her way from the bottom back to the surface while coming out pink, still yelling and able to move quite freely was absolutely ridiculous. The script having him just standing metres away while she's thrashing around was another unbelievable occurrence. There were far too many instances where the stupidity of the script and continuity for the situation and locations were lacking. I am aware this is a true story and I'm so glad they survived but the creative team should have gone to a lot more trouble to ensure they did their research on the location and the weather for that time of year so that the story was believable instead of farcical. Apart from all that, how two people could go to one of the most remote and coldest locations on earth so ill prepared and with no idea how to survive the forces of nature of that part of the world shows the idiocy of a gungho pair of young Americans who think they are invincible. Sorry, but having been an Assistant Editor I am amazed that this even made it to TV.

The News Story is more revealing then the film.
samstune20 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, this is a funny movie with a lot of bad acting. If you actually believe a vegetarian would brave the Alaskan wilderness, then you might like this awful film.True story in part. Most of it is laughable. But, if you read the true story, you will stop laughing. One day before they are rescued, Denise talks Roger into killing the Dog.He does with a knife to save bullets. He couldn't bring himself to eat any of his friend, so Denise skins the dog and cuts him up. And, before they can ever eat any of the dog, they are rescued. The movie Snowbound with Neil Patrick Harris is a much better film. Similar and better acted. Alyssa Milano is not a very good actress and the Artic is not a believable film location for her. She should stick to L.A.

Simple Premise Reaches Predictable End
aesgaard414 April 2001
I only watched this movie for one reason, and she now plays a witch on the WB. Based on a true story, this story shows off both the beauty and the risks of Alaska. Survival is the name of the game as Alyssa Milano and Cameron Bancroft get on each others tempers as they try to reach civilization when their contact forgets them. Sustaining on toothpaste, they also learn a lot more about each other as they learn to depend on each other than if they had just lived together. The ending is predictable, but you don't know how it happens or when. Just when the ending became obvious, someone could have injected some dark comedy and a twist as Milano was found alone with the dog cooking a meaty broth as her rescuers catch up with her. "Like some ?" she could ask with an evil glint in her eyes.

A young couple goes to the wilderness of Alaska and discovers how unprepared they are
blsa12322 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The couple in this movie head to Alaska to pan for gold. They are clueless on how to prepare and survive in the wilderness. I doubt they had any experience in the woods beyond taking a walk under a grove of trees in the park. Their repeated stupidity kept getting them deeper and deeper into trouble. As far as I'm concerned they deserved to die. (disclaimer: I'm not saying they did or didn't die, just that they deserved to).

If you head out into the wilderness, be prepared. Educate yourself before heading out, and listen to those who have the experience to survive. People like this shouldn't step outside the city limits. They endangered themselves, their dog, and others who went to rescue them.

Don't waste your time on this movie unless you want to see what NOT to do when you head out to the wilderness of Alaska.

The Movie was done well, the acting was OK, and the scenery was beautiful, but I found myself disliking the yuppie couple so much it ruined the movie.

A good movie
filmsfan3816 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was made in 1996. It seems to have been made for TV but I never saw it on TV. I saw it tonight on DVD. I live in Canada which is Region 1 (Canada and US) and it doesn't say its available anywhere on DVD. So perhaps its just available in Canada. Its a budget priced DVD and has no subtitles though I like to have subtitles, but the picture quality is very good and so is the price, so I took a chance and bought it though I'd never heard of the movie. The movie is based on a true story. The beginning was a bit draggy for the first half hour but after that, the pace changed and the movie kept me on the edge of my couch for the rest of the movie. A young couple and their dog set out for Alaska seeking gold which was an arrangement between them and a prospector who wanted them to take the risks to find the gold and give him a share. He gave them food supplies and said he would send more. The young couple set out for a cabin in the mountains. Their food supplies soon ran out and they never received any more on the expected date promised, so they had to leave the cabin and try to find a way out of the mountains to safety and their main motive became survival. The way was filled with hazards, deep snow, accidents and great hardships for the young couple who suffered freezing temperatures, severe frostbite in their feet making walking very painful. They were on the verge of giving up quite a few times but kept going. I won't tell you the rest. Its a riveting story with good acting and amazing that its based on a true story. Its a nail biter. If you see it listed on TV sometime I recommend you watch it. Even better if you ever see it on DVD, buy it. Its very good and will keep you interested. It should be on widely distributed DVD.

oh my gosh... freaking hilarious
marlakucera18 June 2008
this movie is not supposed to be funny.

i can just see alyssa milano doing her makeup commercials for that bare minerals thing and then have someone show clips from her in this movie -- she would be completely mortified.

the reason i like this movie: the acting is highly entertaining. i have NO freaking clue how the actors got through this script without dying of laughter. i mean seriously -- i want to make love with you on this beach for 24 hours and then he says to her - yeah but we have a lot of work to do tomorrow so we better not. SLAM! seriously - if you watch this with a big group of people and make fun of it, it's totally worth the 2 bucks that you pay for it at BIG LOTS.

oh and i love how she's freezing at one point - and she's in a TANK TOP. how about you put a jacket on?

oh yeah - and the guy was a total and complete jerk to her! or at least that's how it was portrayed.

and the line where he says 'there's a wolf out there' oh my gosh i never laughed so hard in my life when she says to him 'well hello go get your gun and shoot it - we have to eat!' even though the whole stupid time she's been talking about how she doesn't eat meat and she is craving a veggie burger with fries.

and the thanksgiving line! who cares about thanksgiving when you are going to have ZERO food to eat!

Two young explorers in Alaska are caught by a giant storm
Merdas16 March 2000
The fight for survival in extreme conditions is the main theme of this movie. Caught by a violent storm while they are hundreds of miles away from the nearest town,a couple of explorers is forced to turn their weaknesses into strengths in order to survive.
