- Sahil Sinha (Bobby Deol) comes from a wealthy family. He is the stepson of Governor Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar) whom he does not get along with whilst the Governor tries to get close to him. Even Sahil's mother (Priya Tendulkar) cannot persuade her son to get close to the Governor. Sahil enrolls into college and reunites with his childhood sweetheart/friend, Isha Diwan (Kajol) - the two drifted apart when Isha was sent to boarding school years ago. Isha's father Ishwar (Paresh Rawal) is the secretary of the Governor. Sahil also meets Sheetal Chaudhary (Manisha Koirala) whose father Megnath (Dalip Tahil) is a good friend of the governor. Sahil and Isha fall in love whilst Sheetal falls for Sahil, believing he is also in love with her.
The Governor and Megnath learn that Sheetal loves Sahil so they decide to announce their engagement at Sahil's birthday party. However, this does not go down well with Sahil because he does not love Sheetal and intended to announce his engagement to Isha. The Governor and Sahil get into an argument and in a fit of rage, Sahil holds a knife up to his father, being stopped by his mother. The next day, Sheetal and Dr. Gandhi (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), persuade Sahil to apologize to his father. Sahil becomes very drunk before he decides to do so. When he gets home, he is shocked to discover that his father has been stabbed to death with the same knife Sahil had threatened him with. Although he did not see the killer enter or leave, Sahil has one clue - a locket which may belong to the killer. The next day, he is taken to court, where his mother, Sheetal's father, Isha's father and all those who were present at his party testify against him and say that he must have been responsible for his father's death. Sahil is sentenced to prison - before he goes to jail, he is able to hand the locket over to Sheetal.
Sheetal visits Sahil in jail and agrees to help him break out. Once Sahil is out, he is reunited with Isha. Both Isha and Sheetal decide to help Sahil prove his innocence by solving the mystery of who killed his father. However, the authorities are on Sahil's track - no-nonsense Inspector Udham Singh (Om Puri) and his team is determined to capture Sahil. Sahil decides to visit Dr. Gandhi, believing he will have a clue. However, he finds that Dr. Gandhi has also been stabbed - this makes the investigation more complicated. Sahil and Isha are soon found by Inspector Singh but narrowly escape. Sahil returns to the city and confronts those who testified against him in court, believing that they all had some motive for killing the Governor.
When Inspector Singh realizes what Sahil is actually doing, he believes that Sahil is innocent. He instead investigates the Diwan household and is shocked to discover the knife used to kill the Governor. Isha's father confesses to killing the governor because he was angry that the governor would not let Isha marry Sahil: Ishwar is put in prison. Sahil, now in possession of the locket, opens it, revealing a secret compartment inside that holds a photo, and discovers a terrible truth--the real killer of his father. As it becomes clear that Ishwar is actually innocent, things take a turn for the worst when Inspector Singh is also stabbed and Sheetal is targeted next - Sahil must race to save Sheetal before it is too late. The climax of the movie reveals the true killer.
