Production began immediately after producer Charles Band and director Peter Manoogian ran into one another at the 1995 American Film Market.
Co-writer Peter Fedorenko wrote his part of the script in one week; though the film is loosely based on King Midas, it was Fedorenko's only original script, as he mostly did uncredited re-writes of other scripts. However, he was never paid for his work on this film, aside from foreign residuals.
Not one employee of the Kushner-Locke Company showed up in Romania during production to check on things.
