Electra
rusty.gaynes15 October 2001
I am curious as to why no one has realized the clear connection between Stiles Character Ellie, and the Electra complex, the counterpart to Freud's Oedipal complex. It is pretty clear that this is a remake of the Electra myth.

I found Stiles to be pretty good in this role. Overall, a pretty poor flick. I got the allegory, but still, it's not particularly effective at hitting where it aims.

Ridiculously unsupported ending...
dwpollar28 December 2002
1st watched 12/28/02 - 5 out of 10(Dir-Michael Steinberg): Ridiculously unsupported ending blows what for the most part was a very stylish, well acted, well-done horror/thriller movie. Julia Stiles does a superb job with her role of a tortured child with violent tendencies and the direction is sly and cunning, but for some reason the filmmakers decided to throw a curve in the last half hour that works for some movies but for this one destroyed all that had been built up to this point. To tell you much of the story wouldn't really matter because, just remember, the end isn't what is expected or should be unless the actors & actresses are lying to you throughout it. This is basically about a mother who becomes killed apparently by a break-in but through the twists and turns of the story-telling we are being led to believe that one of the children has something to do with it. That actress is then put through the paces and shown to be a definite possibility to the murder even to the point of imitating her mother after her death and definetly wanting to take her place. The movie should have been more about why she wanted to do this but we only get small hints about this. Then, all of a sudden, instead of exploring what I mentioned in the last sentence the aforementioned `stupid' & `meaningless' ending was thrown at us from left field. I think I've said enough, Yes I'm upset.(but I'll get by). Hopefully Steinberg will as well.

A lame pussyfooter
=G=7 July 2002
When the wife of a middle class suburban family man is brutally murdered, his eldest daughter (Stiles) takes over for her in somewhat more than just cleaning and cooking. "Wicked" is a bland drama with a handful of second tier actors which implies a lot but shows little, stretches its meager plot to cover the run time, barely earns its R rating, pussyfoots around, is left open ended and inconclusive, has no atmospherics, poorly develops its characters, and is pretty much a waste of time. An insidious premise with a Brady Bunch execution. D+

Bland-but-watchable, wicked-little-girl story needs to be tougher on it's audience.
TheVid3 February 2003
If you're going to make a picture centering on a seductive nymphette with a fixation on keeping daddy all to herself, then do it with some courage and conviction. All you get here is slick innuendo for what's at the center of a routine murder mystery. If you're going to tackle this kind of subject matter, then TACKLE IT! On the plus side, Julia Stiles has the pouty, child-as-sex-symbol look nailed; and the rest of the cast also give some personality to their routinely drawn characters. All the ingredients for a good sleazy thriller are here, but sadly, it's all aimed at shocking only the most adolescent of sensibilities. Tasteful trash.

Predictable Plot, Undeveloped Characters
elorasabine17 February 2002
Predictable plot here. My husband & I guessed the ending half-way through the film.

There were many "huh?!" moments. For instance: When the heck did Lawson fall in love with the Julia Stiles character? I must have blinked and missed the entire development of that.

The characters competed with the plot for the "boring and predictable" prize. Julia Stiles did a pretty good job with the empty material she was given, but the other actors were not able to do much with their lame roles.

And the incest stuff . . . yuck!

The case to this DVD had some "If you enjoy this movie, you might want to check out" suggestions: The Babysitter, The Crush, etc.; ie, better-developed versions of this type of film. This movie had potential to be a crazy-girl-wreaks-havoc tour de force for Julia Stiles, as the other films were for Alicia Silverstone. It would have been really fun to see Julia Stiles chew the scenery and go on some major rampages.

Wicked is as Wicked does
Rogue-3219 July 2002
Julia Stiles was the main draw for me to see this film, which genuinely lives up to its title (and then some). WICKED is a sneaky little twist on the let-me-be-your-wife-and-I-will-love-you-better-than-mom-ever-did genre, with great performances and excellently fleshed-out (NO pun intended) characters. Highly recommended for that late-night cable guilty pleasure.

Julia Stiles Doesn't Want You Watch This
LineOfDuty12 January 2023
This is the WORST-terrible, over the top music, bizarre acting and script, and unlikable characters. I really don't understand how this movie even came to be. It's actually embarrassing to admit that I watched it and if you're reading this, wondering if you should give it a chance, the answer is no. The thing is, it's not just a bad movie, it's completely weird and I don't mean in a good way. Weird is fine and even brilliant if it's done right. This is weird like I ate a bag of mushrooms I found in a dumpster. In fact, I wish I had found a bag of mushrooms and ate them instead of watching this movie. What is with the writing?!?! What is wrong with you?! How did this get approved to be filmed AND produced AND distributed?

Pretty good
mattymatt4ever3 September 2001
I think Julia Stiles is a beautiful actress, so I was anxious to pick this movie up when it premiered on video last week. I was hoping it wouldn't be one of those dumb attempts to capitalize on the success of a now-popular star (i.e.: "American Virgin" with Mena Suvari). The movie actually premiered at the Caanes Film Festival in 1998, so I was a little suspicious as to why they pushed the release date (on video).

First of all, I was pleased to find out that Julia WAS the star. The plot is far from original, and works basically on an entertainment level. However, it has an oddly engaging sense of style that keeps you interested. There are ways to take a formulaic plot, and transform it into something unique and fun--"Wicked" is a fine example. The camera angles, the lighting, the creepy undertones (i.e.: incest) of a seemingly pleasant suburban community, the pacing and subtle comic relief beneath all the tension make this worth watching. This is like the work of a first-time independent filmmaker--and I don't mean that in a bad way.

It's also worthy of seeing the beautiful Julia in a good, early performance. This may not be a masterpiece or even a guilty pleasure worthy of several viewings, but it's a good movie and a good rental.

My score: 7 (out of 10)

This movie is disturbing, as is the sexual tension.
chaoscraz23 October 2002
I'm not sure what kind of person would write the screenplay for this movie. It's very disturbing, having to do with love (not paternal) between daughters and fathers, with a twist of mystery. If you ever wanted to marry your father, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. Also, I would advise, if you are a female, don't watch this movie with your father.

Bad
justine962834516 July 2003
I was not aware that Julia Stiles would do something like this, although I praise her for her acting skills. It is a good thing that this film was made before she hit it big. Unfortunately they keep showing this terrible film on hbo and cinemax. God help all those who have seen this film and to aide them from vomitting.

"Wicked" is better than you think
jcumus18 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
As a Julia Stiles fan, I couldn't resist seeing her in an early "bad girl" role. And she is awfully good being bad. Her mood swings and fits of rage, occasional sweetness - and lust - are amazing for an 18 year-old - I doubt anyone else could have brought this part off at that age. She does the job of a badly disturbed young woman very well indeed. Kudos to Julia. Yes, the plot is close to "Electra" and uses many Hitchcockian type shots - but the film is far too episodic to be a Hitchcock rip-off. And what serious murder mystery does NOT use Hitchock's techniques these days? Remember Brian de Palma? He made a career out of it. Now, the plot has been discussed endlessly here, so, in a nutshell, the film concerns itself with a very dysfunctional family living in a ghastly suburban "gated" community near Los Angeles, cut off from the real world. After the brutal death of her mother, Stiles takes over the family from her weak-kneed daddy - and also his bed. Although there is no overt nudity, adultery plays its part, as does incest. A second murder (Stiles), as well as a detective who gets it ALL wrong help confuse us as to the real question: Who committed the murder of the mother? Well, if you don't want to know stop reading - but so many people have gotten it wrong, I felt I must explain. Everything points to Stiles as the killer - she hates her mother, and so has motive - and she also does a fine job of being . . . well . . . wicked. She commits two violent acts and lusting for her father adds to her seeming guilt. But there are a few clues you should look for here: Her mother was having an affair with a golf freak neighbor, an affair that she ends by telling him that she won't run off with him (and then has sex with him anyway - go figure), then refuses to answer his phone calls (we know they are his as he leaves no message on the machine, not wanting daddy to hear them). When the break-in leading to Mom's demise occurs, it is a golf ball that breaks the window allowing entry. Second, when Stiles goes out in the rain, and down in the basement to find her suitcase, the look of surprise on her face at opening it is a giveaway. We guess what's in the suitcase - she does not know. When her sister discovers the suitcase and what is inside she finds a Greek Drama Mask - with a frown (and a lot of blood). This has been missing and is the murder weapon. The sister looks very horrified - but it gives her ideas. As to the cops, the detective - Michael Parks - in a hard-to-hear scene, has the sense to ask the school principal about Stiles' attendance record, which apparently is OK, as we never hear of it again - giving Stiles an alibi. When Stiles is murdered it is with another Greek Mask - this time with a smile - so there are two murder weapons - the second "smile" mask is on the stand next to where the "frown" mask was, and easily available. BUT NO GOLF BALL IS PRESENT. Obviously the little sister has killed Stiles. But did Stiles kill her Mom? No. Mom was killed by her jilted lover, who broke in by tossing a golf ball through a window, then, grabbing the nearest heavy object (the mask) he bashes her brains in. The little sister is a copy-cat killer, and Stiles suffers her needless "revenge." The plot twists in this movie are a bit disturbing and this is not a film for kiddies. But for a low budget independent flick, it does a very good job of taking us for an eerie, violent, sometimes sexual, but always mysterious ride.

Underrated thriller.
gridoon16 June 2003
What's the use of watching movies if you're unwilling or too prejudiced to spot a genuinely talented filmmaker, regardless of the genre (or the budget) he's working with? Michael Steinberg shows, in this particular movie at least, that he is such a talent; his virtuosity is reminiscent of De Palma in his prime (think "Body Double"), and some of his subjective tracking shots would put Carpenter to shame. It's true that the script is formulaic and unoriginal (has a great twist ending, though). But thanks to the direction and the good performances in each and every role, "Wicked" is a taut, gripping and occasionally steamy little thriller. Worth a look for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre. (**1/2)

Electra Not So Complex
pocca18 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Schlock has its place, but schlock with highbrow pretensions like this mess of a film is just laughable. It's too overblown and ludicrous to even be truly offensive, nonwithstanding the scenes of the fourteen year old Ellie's post-coital spooning with her daddy. The twist ending will be no surprise to anyone who has ever seen a few episodes of "Law and Order." I'll give it two points for some unintentional humour, as when Ms Stiles hisses at her father about the telltale birthmark on his left "butt cheek" (making him whimper like a spanked puppy), but otherwise this film is nothing more than a waste of two talented young actresses.

Evil Never Looked so boring
jay_hall200215 April 2004
Wicked is a extremely bizzare film, there is such a varied mix of ideas that it is very hard to keep track of the story, the ideas are good ones there's a bit of who dunnit, murder, intrigue, sex, deception, being physcotic, dealing with you dad getting a new girlfriend and much more but Wicked just cant seem to link them altogether to make a good strong cohirent plot. The main story is after a women has a huge row with her daughter she is murdered in a very brutal manner, the police are trying to track down the killer but are having very little luck. All the way through the film the tension is very high and the atmosphere is very good, there a immense who dunnit as the writers throw in suspects left, right and centre. There is also a very intriguing plot twist when the daughter becomes ever obsessed with her dad. The gorey scenes are also very brutal for a 15 certificate. Julia Stiles puts in a good performance as a character who through the course of the film you see slowly going over the edge, the rest of the cast are very good to its just a shame that the poor writing let them down. Most of the film is quite good, going along at a good pace and adding more and more plot twists, but the ending is just the most ludicrous thing I have ever seen, you never really find out who killed the mum and its just a excuse for the to be a total blood bath, where people get there heads smashed in, their feet cut and a hole blasted through their heart.

All a bit strange
bazookamouth-221-89809723 October 2018
Julia Stiles was terrific in this strange movie about incest and murder. There was a interesting plot twist at the end but the majority of the movie was poor. Particulary weak was the father played by William H. Moses, he was very unconvincing and some of the side characters and the music was awful , didn't fit with the movie. ALl to odd.

Actually a good and underrated movie - a complex character study with plenty of symbolism
sarastro724 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I get more and more respect for Julia Stiles, the more movies I see with her. Initially, I considered her rather boring and not even particularly pretty, but now that I've seen a wide selection of her choice of roles, I find her growing on me in a big way! She's been in Shakespeare movies and she's generally not afraid to tackle difficult, uncommercial and controversial material. Save The Last Dance was a great experience for me; I could watch it over and over. So of course I also had to get Wicked. In fact, after looking for it for a long time, I was finally able to buy it as a second-hand DVD from a friend.

The movie was something quite different than I expected. I thought it was going to have supernatural elements, but it didn't. Instead it was a fairly low-key drama about how social and especially familial misery is perpetuated. How people continue down bad roads because they mimic what they see their role models (usually older family members) do.

The general structure of the movie is that of a murder mystery, and a quite effective one. Ellie's mother is killed, and seemingly everyone in the family and communal vicinity are unstable enough to be suspects. Was it the baby-sitter, the father or the neighbor? Or was it Ellie herself, whose relationship with her mother was particularly bad, even hateful? There seems, from the user comments here, to be differing opinions about who the murderer was, because the end of the movie is not very specific about the first murder. Was it Ellie or her younger sister? In my opinion, it makes by far the most sense if it was Ellie. The younger sister ended up killing Ellie, of course, but there is no logic to her being the first murderer. Instead there is plenty of logic to Ellie being the first murderer, because her younger sister was just mimicking Ellie. In fact, I'm sure this is the case, because of the strangle-hold episode, where Ellie nearly strangles her sister - this would have "inspired" her sister to conclude that this was the proper sort of way to deal with a problematic situation. (Indeed, the first murder *cannot* have been committed by the younger sister, due to her reaction to her discovery of the suitcase containing the murder weapon.)

So, the movie was about "monkey see, monkey do", or, as Shakespeare put it, "the evil that men do lives after them". We first have Ellie trying to replace her mother as the woman of the house, incl. all marital duties, and when she partially achieves this, her sister subsequently replaces Ellie's earlier role in the house, starting also to carry out the tasks that she saw Ellie do. Essentially, the youngest sister is trying to replace Ellie, just as Ellie tried to replace their mother, and using most of the same methods to achieve it - even murder.

Yes, it is an updated version of the Electra story, and it is also a statement about the dangers of isolation. Taking place in a gated community that is meant to shut out the evils of the world, we see that those evils continue in our midst, because with the gated community we have done nothing but *pretend* that those evils were not part of us - in other words, we have glossed over some symptoms but not dealt with the causes.

Even beyond this, there are many interesting non-literal elements to think about in this movie. For instance, the opening, with the blond girl that we think is Ellie driving around (intercut with scenes of Ellie packing), but is really Lena, must be meant to indicate that Ellie's father likes women with that look. So maybe he had a subconscious reverse-Oedipal complex towards his daughter, too. In general, the father was an unassertive and weak-minded man that one couldn't feel much sympathy for.

Anyway, the movie is well-acted and quite absorbing on most levels. The one thing that keeps it from a higher rating is that it simply isn't believable that the 11 or 12-year-old young sister is capable of the brutal murder of her older sister - maybe she had the will to do it, but it's highly doubtful that she had the physical strength. However, because of the symbolism and nice structure to the movie, I can accept the ending - but only just.

I'm looking forward to a second viewing, where I may notice more details.

My rating: A very solid 7 out of 10.

Loved Her Father Tooo Much
whpratt130 November 2005
Found this film very interesting and enjoyed the great acting of Julia Stiles, (Ellie Christianson), "Mona Lisa Smile", who adored her father and never seemed to get along with her mom. However, both parents had other interests outside of the marriage and the story has many unconventional situations created between a daughter and her father. Ellie could identify certain marks on her father's butt that proved very damaging to any adult talking to her. Ellie had a neighbor who lived next door, who was in the process of having a divorce, and had the hots for her every movement and enjoyed driving golf balls into their windows. Things portrayed in this film have happened in real life, ever since man and woman were created and they will continue to be just plain WITCHED !

Not as bad as I anticipated... at all!
punishmentpark26 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
'Wicked' has long been on my list to watch, mostly because of the enchanting Julia Styles, but I was as much afraid that it would be just something of a B-film with no redeeming qualities. But I was quite wrong, I'm happy to admit. It opens straight away with a blend of some Hitchcockian elements (fine cinematography, fine classical music - there is some noisy music later on, as well - and a square stairwell, even!), showing us the main character Ellie, who's in the habit of running away from every almost every single day, and a few other key inhabitants of Casa del Norte, a secured suburb somewhere in America. And that Hitchcockian feel never goes away.

The story is not all the time focused on the thriller side of things, but mostly feels like something close to a twisted - quite twisted - black crime comedy on suburban family life gone astray, with some horror and drama elements. The title, plot and movie poster really don't leave much room for guessing, but there's a twist at the end, and the whole ride is more than fun enough to go along for - I've even seen it twice within a few days. Julia Styles may take the cake, but not without Vanessa Zima taking a big chunk as well, and none of the other cast members disappoint.

A devious little flick from the late '90s that is worth a try, I'd say. A good 7 out of 10.

What ridiculous writing and bad acting.
lastexitinny-5423612 January 2023
Bad writing, bad music. Awful plot. Father kissing his daughter, next scene they wake up together. Had to fast forward through most of it. These other reviewers are joking or high as a kite. Beware if you are going to rent this or watch for free. Not sure if the actors really needed the money or if this was one of those movies they did for a favor for their uncle. As the movie wears on, the plot and acting actually get worse. Didn't think it was possible. Who is the murderer? Who is the horny daughter? No one will care. You'll be glad when it's over or when you click off and leave a one star review. Spare yourself and skip it actually.

Electra - more complex than it looks.
emdoub27 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
7 out of 10 for the performances - while the characters were often cardboard cutouts, the actors and director *sold* those characters pretty well.

I've seen other reviewers comment that the ending was unbelievable - I suggest that they re-watch the movie and look again. Obvious misdirection toward Ms. Stiles' character make the plot twist work, quite wickedly.

(Here's the spoiler, for those who don't want to sit through this twice - Julia Stiles' character is not innocent of anything but matricide, but she didn't do that.)

Some interesting characterizations, some new twists on the Electra plot, some great camera-work, and a topic that's not often seen on film - a daughter's heavy fixation on her father as a love interest. Not a film to write home about, but an enjoyable and surprising 90 minutes.

Two hours I will never get back. Why do I do this to myself? Always waiting for it to get better. I need ambian.Do I really have to write 10 lines of text to explain how bad this movie was? I'ts not so much the perverse nature of the film, or the bad acting, or the lame plot. I hate it when a movie doesn't give you any finality. I also don't know what it is that everyone like about Ellie Christianson either. I understand that she is very pretty to look at, but that doesn't sustain you through this movie or any of the others I have seen her in. She is too flat and I lose interest in her quickly. The other reviews that praise her have to be men. I can't imagine anyone would truthfully believe she is a good actress. Also the editing left much to the imagination. Very choppy. I could not find one performance that made this movie worth watching.

Superb little gem of a thriller. Hitchcock would've loved it
smokehill retrievers19 July 2002
I stumbled on this on cable, expecting very little -- and was I ever surprised! The young female lead was spectacular, and all the main actors did fine, fine work, even the youngest child. This film deserves a much wider audience.

My only explanation for the extremely low ratings is the subject matter. The shadow of incest is off-putting to a lot of people, and I suspect many viewers just cannot enjoy a film where the subject matter makes them very uncomfortable. This is not a wimpy film with the predictable moral messages, but a very gutsy, finely-crafted piece of work that keeps you on the edge straight through.

This is a refreshingly different and exciting film that is miles beyond the usual Hollywood rot, and it manages to convey a steamy, dangerous eroticism without nudity or simulated-sex scenes. It takes a real director and some real actors to pull this off. And they didn't have to resort to car chases or gunfights, either.

Great performances and directing, very convincing, but disturbing
KSprowl11 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I loved Julia Stiles in "10 Things I Hate About You" and picked up this movie at the video store because she was in it. I found the characters in this film well developed and convincing...a little bit overly so. The subject matter and plot were very disturbing, yet engrossing...like watching a car accident.

I found the film very well directed with good cinematography, well acted and hats off to Julia Stiles for pulling in a very convincing performance of a very disturbed teenage girl and the equally disturbed dysfunctional people in her life. The film was very engrossing, but just as equally unsettling. I would prefer to see all of the individuals involved in this project in something a little more uplifting before I could honestly recommend someone seeing this film to show how far they have progressed beyond this madness.

Stiles is Good
billcr1229 March 2023
Julia Stiles plays the troubled teenage daughter of an unhappily married couple who lives with her little sister in a well-to-do gated community.

Both mother and father play around, daddy with a housekeeper and mommy with a grungy looking neighbor.

One sunny morning, mom is beaten to death and Michael Parks is the lead detective in the case. I remember him from a TV series from 1969-1970 called Then Came Bronson.

Stiles becomes a substitute wife for her grieving father and it leads to some cringe worthy moments.

I was captivated for the first three quarters of the film but the ending made no sense whatsoever.

Stiles has gone on to showcase her talents and the Showtime series Dexter was one of her better roles. She makes Wicked worth a viewing.
