The neo-noir thriller Too Late is not a horror film per se, but its newly released trailer features a cut set to the soundtrack of 1962’s Carnival of Souls. You’ll find some haunting images in the experimental trailer, and the… Continue Reading →

In a story that really should have the headline “Man Arrested 14 Years Too Late For Renting Horrible Film,” a Concord, N.C. man was charged with failure to return a long overdue VHS copy of Freddy Got Fingered to a local video store. Wsoc-tv is reporting that James Meyers was pulled over by police March 23 for what was originally a faulty tail light. After the cops ran his information through the system, they asked Meyers to step out of his vehicle. That's when the story gets weird. “The guy brings me to the back of the car and he goes, ‘Sir, I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie Freddy Got Fingered and you never returned it…and we’re here to take you to jail’.” Meyers recounted. According to the network, Meyers was...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

With the 2015 awards season finally wrapped up, we can now genuinely look towards the year ahead. This month brings a handful of long-awaited festival hold-overs from last year, as well as a few promising studio titles. It should also be noted that essential restorations of Late Spring (3/4), River of Grass (3/11), A Brighter Summer Day (3/11), and Fireworks Wednesday (3/16) will be coming to select cities (and some beyond). If you’re in New York City, we’ll also be getting the grand opening of a new arthouse cinema — the Lower East Side’s Metrograph, which is dedicated to a mix of repertory and new releases.
Matinees to See: Songs My Brothers Taught Me (3/2), The Wave (3/4), Boy and the Beast (3/4), Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (3/4), Creative Control (3/11), Eye in the Sky (3/11), Hello, My Name is Doris (3/11), Lolo (3/11), Marguerite (3/11), Remember (3/11), Hyena Road (3/11), The Little Prince (3/18), Too Late (3/18), The Program (3/18), and Born to be Blue (3/25).

The polls for this Sunday's 88th annual Academy Awards closed on Tuesday. Leonardo DiCaprio can now breathe easy, there's no more campaigning to be done for his inevitable win. One last-minute Oscars 2016 campaign argued for "Deadpool" to nab some votes. Ryan Reynolds tweeted out a "For Your Consideration" poster which was damn near perfect -- if only he had just done a cleavage push like Melissa Leo for "The Fighter."

Just because the Deadpool movie is ineligible to compete in the Oscars this year doesn't mean he won't be trying to get in on the action! Ryan Reynolds posted a message encouraging a write-in vote for the movie for the Academy Awards. He says:
"Only a few hours left for Oscar voting. Too late for a write-in campaign for an ineligible movie?"
The nominations that they've put on the mock poster above are pretty damn funny. The Oscars are set to air this Sunday night at 5:30 pm. I freakin' love the marketing campaign for this film! I love that they are still having fun with it even though the movie has already been out in theaters for a couple of weeks.

If you.ve been paying attention for the last few weeks, you.re well aware that the Ryan Reynolds-starring, R-rated superhero flick Deadpool is currently ruling the box office. But do you think that.s enough for the Merc with the Mouth? Oh hell no. Making hundreds of millions of dollars is just the beginning. And the Oscar goes to …. “Deadpool”? It’s definitely within the realm of fake possibility, if “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds has his way. Reynolds took to Twitter to make the case for his hit superhero film on Tuesday, noting, “Only a few hours left for Oscar voting. Too late for a write-in campaign for an ineligible movie?” Also Read: Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Bitch-Slaps 'SNL' Petition, Mocks Kanye West The actor even included an image listing the film’s vast accomplishments. What accomplishments would those be, you ask? Well, according to the poster, “Deadpool” is the viewer of five Academy Awards.

Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Alien may be a sci-fi horror classic, but what about the movies that inspired it - including David Cronenberg’s debut, Shivers?
At first, they might look as different as night and day. One is the directorial debut from a maverick Canadian director, the other is a Hollywood movie funded by 20th Century Fox. One is set in deep space, the other in a luxury apartment block on terra firma. One had a decent amount of money to throw at the construction of sets and special effects, the other was made for a few thousand dollars.
Yet Alien, released in 1979 and triggering a franchise that is still growing and mutating today, has more in common with Shivers than at first meets the eye. Cronenberg made Shivers for approximately $130,000 in 1975. Could it be that this low-budget shocker inspired what is still considered to be the ultimate space horror movie?...

Ben Stiller's professional onscreen career is officially turning 30 this year — that's roughly 412 in comedian years. In a business where funny people tend to quickly exhaust their limited charm and sink from telling jokes to becoming a punchline, the restless and versatile Stiller has managed to sustain one of the most consistent comic careers this side of Bob Hope. From his days as a bit player to his later emergence as a force of nature in front of the camera and behind the scenes (you have his production company Red...

Two premieres. One big night. “American Masters – Carole King: Natural Woman” and “Stargate Theatre: A Defining Act” are two singular documentaries observing two very different sets of performers. “American Masters – Carole King: A Natural Woman” examines the life and career that inspired the Tony Award-winning musical about the singer-songwriter, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” The PBS documentary includes an exclusive new interview with King, and weaves in previously unseen and rare performances from the musical icon. King is a four-time Grammy Award winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, recent Kennedy Center Honoree, and the first woman awarded with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The film celebrates the 30th anniversary of the “American Masters” series, as well as the 45th anniversary of King’s “Tapestry” album, which produced several hits, including “So Far Away,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “It’s Too Late.

We dissected the latest Suicide Squad trailer in the hope of finding clues about David Ayer’s villainous movie…
The new Suicide Squad trailer has landed, in all its Bohemian Rhapsody-spewing glory. It explains the plot to us better than previous promos, as well as showcasing more characters and closer-to-being-finished special effects. All this is understandable, considering that David Ayer’s villainous super-team movie is now only a few months away (it lands on American and UK screens alike at the start of August).
Here’s everything we could deduce by breaking down the trailer shot by shot…
Is this the real life…
The trailer sets out the basics of the Suicide Squad premise very effectively. If it wasn’t clear before, these villains have been locked up for rather a long time, and they’re taking it a variety of different ways.

Who am I?
Last year I wrote an article called the Middleman. ComicMix and Bleeding Cool ran versions of the piece. Written during a time the news was full of accounts of unarmed black men and women being killed. I was also diagnosed with severe depression during that period. My article was my account of what series of events may end my life. I firmly believe as an African American man my life can be cut short by simply exercising rights that white men take for granted.
White men can say anything they want at any time without giving it a second thought. Once, Denys Cowan and I were told “carry our bags” by two white guys in a Texas airport. They were joking and thought the whole thing hilarious. If we were joking with them Denys and I would have been the first to laugh. We weren’t and we didn’t.

Too late for Michael Bay to pivot into government? Nasa has announced the establishment of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, which is set up to defend Earth from asteroids, comets and presumably, should the need arise, aliens? Unclear. Russell Crowe took to Twitter on Monday to slam Virgin Australia for its ban on hoverboards. The actor blasted the policy, which forced him and his kids to abandon the toy at the airport. “Ridiculous @Virgin Australia. No Segway boards as luggage?” he wrote. “Too late to tell us at the airport. Kids and I offloaded. Goodbye Virgin. Never again.” The airlines official Twitter account quickly wrote back to inform Crowe that the ban is not unique to Virgin, but is common among major airlines. The account also informed him that its policies were made clear when he booked his ticket.

This week's gloriously absurd episode, The Castle, was sheer, unadulterated Fargo...
This review contains spoilers.
2.9 The Castle
The all-out massacre that provided the climax of this episode has been signalled since before this season had even started (an older Lou referred to it, with heavy understatement, as ‘bloody’ during season one) and was heralded by a steady increase in dread in the preceding few episodes. This palpable foreboding became almost unbearable in the first two thirds of the episode itself as a collective spirit of arrogance, manipulation and good old fashioned stupidity swirled into an inevitable orgy of violence. That final multiway outburst was simply a fantastic piece of action television; frantic, exciting, and utterly, utterly terrifying.
It was also gloriously absurd. Sheer, unadulterated Fargo. Indeed, there is a case to be made for The Castle being considered the exemplar episode of Fargo, every special component working...

Chicago – Carole King, from modest roots and beginnings, went on to become the most successful female songwriter of the last forty years of the 20th Century. So this “natural woman” was perfect for a musical overview of her life and great songs, in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”
Play Rating: 4.0/5.0
The structure and songs are the highlight of King’s life story, starting in the late 1950s on Tin Pan Alley (the songwriting strip of Broadway in New York City) to a triumphant Carnegie Hall Concert as a 1970s solo act. Along the way there are the social changes of the 1960s and a legendary songwriting partnership, in addition to the sorrow of the breakup and the evolution of starting over. It is the American Dream and the American songbook rolled into one breezy evening, and the truth of Carole King within the musical is evident from beginning to end.

Will Smith has already conquered Hollywood. Washington, D.C. might be next.
On the Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Smith talked about how the character he plays in his upcoming movie "Concussion" made a real difference in the world. Dr. Bennet Omalu took on the National Football League for covering up concerns that concussions could have long-term negative effects on players. And Smith wants to do make a difference, too — perhaps by getting into politics.

Okay, here's my pitch for a romantic comedy: The boy's a famous pop star. The girl's also a famous pop star. They fight. They make up. Things get serious again. They break up. One day, in a romantic gesture, he admits that he's still open to a relationship with her, telling Ellen Degeneres, "We have a lot of history together." A few weeks later, he runs into her and, knowing that this is his last chance, breaks into "My Girl" at a hotel bar (video courtesy of Instagram and TMZ) to prove that he still has feelings for her. It Wasn't Too Late to Say I'm Sorry Now is going to be the highest grossing movie with a subplot about paparazzi penis photos ever.

Like his latest feature, The Comedy, there will be no film like Rick Alverson‘s Entertainment this year. With Gregg Turkington‘s portraying his alter ego Neil Hamburger, it’s an uncomfortable, often hilarious character study, and today brings another look. Along with an extensive clip, it’s been revealed the soundtrack — which will get 1,000 vinyl pressings — will not only feature music, but comedy segments as well.
We said in our review, “Every second of the 102-minute running time is felt. We’re trapped with this character on his never-ending journey, one that makes for an unpleasant watch. Yet the pace, imagery, and Turkington’s compelling performance add up to an unnerving comedy. Entertainment is the kind of film one never has to see again, but will be better off for having seen it.”
Check out the clip and soundtrack details below along with a conversation between Alverson and Stinking Heaven director Nathan Silver.

Welcome to the 41st season of Saturday Night Live! I’m your host (of these recaps), Emilie Sowers. I’m very excited to cover this upcoming season, which has the potential to be both a more stable year after the various cast shake ups of the past couple seasons, and a particularly exciting year as it will take place during an already bonkers election season, the sort of time during which, historically, SNL has really shone. Our inaugural season 41 episode will be hosted by and will feature the musical stylings of Miley Cyrus, a person who is universally beloved, not at all divisive, and who definitely won’t cause any Internet commenters to declare the decline of SNL/modern society/the entire world. Let’s dig in! Cold Open: A message for America from presidential candidate Donald Trump and his wife Melania. It felt like this was more important as...

There’s a reason I wiped the most recent season of The Bachelorette from my DVR after only two episodes: I don’t actually enjoy watching real people get engaged on television. (Fictional characters? Get down on bended knee and keep doing your thing!)
This might explain the recurring waves of nameless dread I felt during Monday’s installment of The Voice, as host Carson Daly repeatedly teased how “coming up after the break” (after the break) (after the break that’s after the break) (because apparently we’re all going to change the channel to DWTS if there’s...

On August 7, 1987, "Masters of the Universe" stank up movie theaters across the country and killed any hopes of kicking off a live-action franchise for He-Man and his merry band of heroes (the property is currently in the process of being rebooted with the help of "Thor" screenwriter Christopher Yost). As I wrote earlier this week, "MotU" actually wasn't all bad, with standouts like Frank Langella's Skeletor and Bill Conti's excellent score keeping the film just this side of unwatchable. Glory be! A happy byproduct of my online research arose in the form of a YouTube recommendation for a video entitled "The Making of Masters of the Universe the Motion Picture," which is not, as it turns out, an extra ripped from the film's DVD release but rather a segment from a 2012 documentary entitled "Toy Masters," which boasts the following synopsis on IMDb: "Filmmakers Roger Lay, Jr. and Corey Landis...

Drake has another reason to pop a few bottles. The rapper, who uses the Instagram handle @champagnepapi, just charted the year’s first platinum-selling album. According to Nielsen Music, Drake’s mixtape “If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late” has sold 1.007 million copies as of this week, making it 2015’s first release to move over a million units. The Canadian rapper celebrated by writing on his Instagram page, “Platinum off the tape. Views up next. Thank you once again.” The only other album to pass the million mark this year is Taylor Swift’s “1989,” but it was released in October 2014. Also Read:.

Mani Ratnam (b. 1955, Chennai) is that rarest of film directors nowadays: an artist capable of making exquisitely crafted, hugely entertaining, yet intelligent and provocative films on a range of social and political issues. Museum of the Moving Image is proud to present a special tribute to Ratnam featuring the director in person with a trilogy of films that follow lovers against a backdrop of Indian politics: Roja(1992), Bombay (1995), and Dil Se (1998)—the last featuring one of the most famous scenes in all of Indian cinema, the “Chaiyya Chaiyya” musical number on top of a moving train. The series, Politics as Spectacle: The Films of Mani Ratnam, runs from July 31 through August 2, 2015. Ratnam will participate in conversations after each film, moderated by Richard Peña.

In 1996, Chris Evans and Danny Baker launched a show that would become as synonymous with 1990s as the Spice Girls and Eric Cantona.

The CW's promos for Nina Dobrev's last episode of The Vampire Diaries implored us to "Say Goodbye Before It’s Too Late," but in the season 6 finale it really felt like it wasn't enough time to bid farewell to such a beloved character. It was always bound to be [...]...

Orphan Black fans, I have a confession to make: I liked this week’s episode much more than the season premiere, which I found unwieldy to the point where I got lost in the plot.
This week’s episode was calmer and more rooted in character than conspiracy, although we still got plenty of Project Castor developments.
So let’s get to the action, which begins between the sheets as Rudy brings a random woman back to his hotel room. As they’re in the throes of passion, Seth joins in, much to the woman’s horror once she opens...

Could there be another development in the Drake-Madonna drama? Probably not, but we're going to explore that possibility for a moment anyway. First, Drizzy himself decided to set the record straight about his reaction to the shocking Coachella makeout session, posting on Instagram, "Don't misinterpret my shock!! I got to make out with the queen Madonna and I feel [100] about that forever. Thank you @madonna." Then this morning, the rapper released a bonus track to accompany next week's collector's edition of If You're Reading This Its Too Late, called "My Side." Hmmm. In just a few weeks the multiplexes will give way to the big, brash Summer blockbusters. Too late for last year’s Oscars (in the Us at least) is this historical true-life romantic drama, which, oddly enough, shares several figures and settings from one of last year’s award nominees. Mr. Turner told the story of one of the nineteenth century’s most celebrated painters. Many of that film’s scenes were set at the prestigious Royal Academy of Art, where the merits of different works were vigorously debated. One of the strongest voices was that of John Ruskin, fellow artist, historian, and critic. Now comes the story that didn’t make it into the Timothy Spall biopic, a scandalous tale concerning the marriage of Mr. Ruskin and the much younger Effie Gray.
At the film opens, the narration tells us of the courtship of now nineteen year-old Effie (Dakota Fanning...

[...] and also, indeed more, perhaps in those who were in no way exceptional and have left no trace, there was something that went beyond the struggle against Nazism, something – be it only for a moment, the last one – that contributed, whether they knew it or not, to the “dream of a thing” which men have had “for so long,” to the enormous dream of men. These words of Franco Fortini, spoken in Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub’s Fortini/Cani (1978), are a kind of summation of one of the major themes of their work. From one film to the next, they return to this “dream of a thing”: the day Camille dreams of in Eyes Do Not Want to Close At all Times (1969) when “Rome will allow herself to choose in her turn,” human’s desire to commune with the gods in From the Cloud to the Resistance (1979), the “new duties,...
