Lau Lauritsen often directed comedies in the company of Alice O'Fredericks, who continued that genre on her own. Lau Lauritzen without Alice did a number of noteworthy films where drama was more in focus than comedy. The Forties was the decade of well put together dramas, and Søren Søndervold is a very fine example, primarily because of Ebbe Rode, who plays a revengeful person wanting to get back on a greedy grocer in his hometown, who made Søren loose his heritage, the family farm. The film is a remake of a Norwegian drama, and there is substance enough for a whole TV series, which actually came to be decades later in Denmark with another revengeful business man getting to dominate and rule a whole town (Matador). Ebbe Rodes title character is more extreme, which is needed when pulling everything off within one single film. A serious esteemed actor, Poul Reumert, surprises us playing a sleazy lawyer and Ib Schønberg adds more to his comedy repertoire by acting out as a gay shop clerk.
