A good effort in a misdirected idea
diesixdie17 June 2007
I recall watching this a couple of times when it was new. My impression at the time was that they did a pretty good job on a fundamentally bad idea.

The original show focused on the relationship between one man and one artificially intelligent car. The show was cheesy, but the two characters were sufficiently well developed and portrayed that audiences cared enough to tune in. The original kept it simple and concentrated on making the car seem human and the overblown Hollywood star (Hasselhof) seem like a real person, albeit with unrealistic hair. The idea that one man can make a difference is enigmatic and inspiring.

The idea that a flock of five people and five vehicles working with a seemingly unlimited budget and with constant governmental oversight can make a difference is just oppressive and obvious. How do you keep the stories coherent and how do you keep the audience caring about ten characters, all of whom only get very limited screen time? You don't! You need a scorecard just to keep track of what car has what personality. I kinda felt pity for the poor criminals. It's hardly fair, in a story context, that they should have to try to stand up to this virtual army of foes, blasted about the world in a cargo jet, armed with superweapons and hyperintelligent computers. Give the poor crooks a break! With all that in mind, the production company did a pretty good job. The show looked great, the cars were jazzy and the voice acting was adequate. The effects were as good as should be expected and there was lots of mindless action. The vehicles had a mass produced feel, compared to the original KITT. KITT had a "one-off" feel to his design, apart from his evil twin, KARR. The five new cars had a consistency of design that made them feel less personal. It kind of contributed to the show's downfall, which was that it failed to focus on key characters that the audience could identify with and care about.

TV producers forget, in their rush to display fancy machinery, and car crashes, that the long-term success of a TV series is almost entirely based on it's portrayal of compelling characters. Design your characters first, flesh them out, make them human, make the audience care about them, and what happens to them. Put actors in the roles that match the personalities being portrayed and let them do their jobs. Create screenplays and stories that challenge your well-developed characters. Put them in situations that test their limits. After you've done all that, worry about special effects and stunts. It helps if you don't try to have ten central characters.

Speaking-up in FAVOUR of TKR....
DominoRose13 August 2000
I know that many expected this to be Knight Rider II, and they were disappointed. It is difficult to consider that a sequel would be so successful 15 years after the original [we've seen next-year sequels fail miserably before].... I give the TKR team (cast & crew) kudos for such a valiant effort. For those that wanted an "episode-one" match-up to the original KR series ... it's really unfair to expect a series to fully develop in one season "to expectations." I think that happened here.

What makes TKR succeed in my mind consists of a few things cute (though corny-at-times) dialogue, complex interpersonal relationships, and the "personalities" of the vehicles. Too bad, on the last point, that the series was killed after the first season; I would have liked to see where things would have gone with the personalities of the five vehicles....

The show, which does at times seem like a fan-show (written by fans and not by/via/supported-by the real writers themselves), does play with the idea of different personalities ... what KITT "could have been" [ballsy Beast, sweet-n-sexy Domino, prim-and-proper Kat, eclectic Plato and by-the-book/snobby Dante]. Not knocking-on Glen Larson's idea for the original KITT, but sometimes, variation can be ... "fun!" You have to admit, the voices were beautifully cast and the "character" matches to the vehicles' drivers was ... classic [especially Jenny/Domino, Duke/Beast and, of course, Trek/Plato].

Sorry, but ... I think we lost-out in a large way when TKR was axed.

Nia, Tom, Andrea, Linda, Kerrigan, Jon, Christine, Brixton, Duane, Kathy, Nick: TKR fans wish you the best of future success in your careers!

A woeful effort to continue the Knight Rider legacy
nathanjamesemerson25 September 2018
I am a huge fan of Knight Rider and was looking forward to this when I saw the commercials on television.

But after watching the first episode I felt like I was watching a lame rip off of the original.

None of the characters or the personality of the vehicles were likeable. The stunts were ok but the CGI was horrible.

The story lines were not interesting and it was a struggle to watch the entire season without falling asleep.

I must say I would buy the series of this on DVD if it was released to add to my Knight Rider Collection. But I would leave it sealed on the display.

It had none of the magic that the original had. None. No exciting action sequences or some of the humour. It was bland and uninteresting.

Check out the Knight Rider series from 2008. It is a much better show and it attempted to recapture the magic of the original.

Tkr

I have to disagree with others,I thought this show was great. It was a pity it was canceled. This show was great, and great action, great acting. I loved this show when it came out, I wish they would put it back on the air one last time. I believe that the voice acting of the vehicles and the acting on the part of the drivers was good. The vehicles themselves were awesome.I have to admit, the voices were good cast and the character matches to the vehicles' drivers. I believe this show could have done at least another season. Does anyone have any episodes they could record for me? I would gladly pay.

A valiant effort!

TKR was a good show with lots of potential. Many people judge it harshly, but I believe that the voice acting of the vehicles and the acting on the part of the drivers was good. I believe if they had been given another season to work through, the actors could have grown into the roles more and the relationships with the vehicles would have developed further. Fans who wanted the KITT/Michael relationship were bound to be disappointed since this was NOT a show focusing on KITT and Michael. These were *new* personalities, and to me that was its charm.

The vehicles themselves were awesome, and I do hope they are safely stored away somewhere to be shown off at some future time. It was nice to see the two motorcycles damaged and rebuilt. It was also great to see why there was now a TEAM and not just ONE hero. There was continuity between the two shows and it was nice to see them move away from the KR 2000 timeline and just work a new one in.

I believe this show deserved at least another season to prove its worth.

A decent show that had potential.

Much better than any of the other Knight Rider movies or sequels/reboots.

I think it's main downfall was the sheer amount of members in Team Knight. It was hard to follow and care about the character development and background of 10 characters.

They should have stuck to two main human characters and cars maybe introducing another duo later on in the season/series.

darknight_sa21 February 2001
I have seen all the episodes of the series and i believe that it had the misfortune to be overshadow by the original series although it worth more attention than the one given. I think that the actors and actresses were all great and the cars amazing.I am a big fan of Christine Steel who i believe was more than great.IT WAS A PITY IT WAS CANCELED.

Good Show!
amy-794 October 1999
This show has a great polished look and great action! Some of the plots are little far fetched; but what action series isn't. If you compare this show to others like it , I think it is far superior. Shows like Viper, Darkman and V.I.P are still on the air and are 100 times worse than Team Knight Rider...this doesn't make sense. The action sequences, acting, and overall look in TKR blow away any of the competeters...and it still got cancelled. There should have been another season!

I loved this show when it came on. It didn't have anything to do with Knight Rider, but I never really like that show. The acting and the plots were kind of bad, but it was still a good show. I was so upset when they canceled the show. Most people thought the show wasn't any good, but I loved it!

Team Knight Rider hurts in one place
lawrencewilkinsonw28 December 2012
The severe problem with this series was that we got no back story with the new cast. Who were they, why were they chosen, and who chose them? Sure we got little looks into their past (i.e. Kyle's past with the CIA, Jenny's past with the military, Erika's life as a thief) but we don't get anything past that. Why should we accept these guys as the predecessors to Michael and KITT when we know nothing about them?

A good back story would have gone along way in helping the fans warm up to the new show, but sadly we don't get that, we just get introduced to them and told "Here's the new team, they have talking cars too, enjoy!"

The show would been great if they addressed that major detail, its just something you cant over look.

The Greatest American Television Show
fawna8 March 2000
This show was the best. I have to admit, it is my favorite show, and i have all 22 episodes on tape. The stories are top notch, and unlike many action shows, it leaves just enough hanging so that you always come back for more. Too bad the show was cancelled, before some of the mysteries were solved.

Should have called it Dismissal
afijamesy2k2 April 2003
In 1982, David Hasselhoff and the cast did a wonderful job in knight rider, But this remake of a television classic, is by far even worse than the original, this time they have 5 operatives with 5 super vehicles of their own, the acting is wooden, the teleplay is pointless and the special effects are horrible, they should have called this Thunderbirds without a plot

RIP Edward Mulhuare and thank god he did not live to see this and thank god this show didn't get pick a second season

Team knight Rider is Boring Five people can't make a difference.

No Stars.

Embarrassing and hideous

Warning: Spoilers
The major concern with this show (apart from the lack of any originality or plot) is the fact that there are too many characters and machines to get to know. And they all seem to be very much the same. Synthesized voices and (less than) witty comebacks. They are all poor cousins of K.I.T.T The effects are so cheap it feels like it could be the another version of Power Rangers. The actors are pretty but talentless and if a chatty Land Rover is your idea of entertainment this is right up your street. For me it couldn't be anymore uninspiring. Some of the thin plots linked to Michael Knight as if that was going to entice you to stay tuned. But even the cheese-meister that is Hasselhoff, wouldn't bring himself to guest star on this crud.

Shouldn't have got past the pilot stage.

The term "Went downhill after David Hasselhoff left" is no longer an oxymoron.
Victor Field20 November 2001
The TV movie/prospective pilot "Knight Rider 2000" was dreadful, no doubt about it - but the later "Team Knight Rider" made that misbegotten effort look like "Brian's Song" in comparison.

The premise is that ten years down the line one man and his machine is no longer enough to handle crime; now five people and five machines are required to do the job. Sounds a lot like "Thunderbirds," doesn't it? Except that "Thunderbirds" boasted better writing, better machines, stronger characterisation (I'm serious), more excitement, and more convincing special effects. (We won't make any "wooden acting" jokes.) This really makes you appreciate David Hasselhoff's contribution to the original show - big-headed though he may be, he definitely has more talent and charisma than the mob assembled here. KITT also had more of a personality than the gadgetry on display here as well.

Kathy Trageser (Erica) was cute, and the theme music was good, but otherwise this embarrassing farrago was so subpar that Glen Larson wouldn't have been blamed for taking his name off it if he had chosen to do so. (Then again, anyone who's seen the truly appalling pilot for "NightMan" will know that "shame" isn't part of Larson's vocabulary.) Thank heaven this didn't get a second season...

Misguided Attempt to recreate the genre
JamesPP4 March 1999
Why was this so bad? Because the decision to make it came from 90's TV execs. This was trying to be slick and hip with a young politically correct cast and no relation to the original whatsoever. The ORIGINAL series was successful because it didn't take itself seriously. And it had humour! And character actors who developed 'brand loyalty'. Now if Universal had approached Larson Entertainment and persuaded Hasselhoff to return with the Original KITT (ignoring the mistake that was KR2000) and all new Larson-stable plots and directors, we would have had a guaranteed hit.

Worthless
cobrasoldier6 March 2001
This is the most worthless piece of "entertainment" I've ever seen. The horribly poor editing makes it impossible for one to understand what is happening or who is talking (Who said that? Was it a car or the villain?). The action sequences are lame, and the names of the cars are easily forgotten, as are the faces of the actors.

But the worst thing is probably that the heroes often mention "Michael Knight" as someone they look up to, and who fought for justice and so on. Hey, he was a tall guy in a cool black car, Team Knight Rider are just a pack of losers in weird, terribly coloured machines.

Not comparing to the original series, this is still as bad as they come.

Terrible show
Mac-593 March 2001
Every show has one attribute to validate it's existence. I suppose TKR's is the idea behind it: Knight Rider-with a bang. Good idea but unfortunately that alone won't keep a series alive for very long. Especially when the show has a cast of bad actors, ridiculous cars with irritating voices, extremely poor plots, bad dialogue, etc.... On the other hand, TKR had a big budget so it didn't look all to bad. It was flashy and had explosions but like I said, it was so cheesy-packed with stupid situations to make your eyes roll. Only reason I watch it is because it is on before Early Edition (great show). Anyway, avoid TKR if you can. It stinks

Team Knight Rider

Warning: Spoilers
Out of all the shows that network execs killed, this is, perhaps, one of the three saddest (the other two on the top three are Crusade and Firefly). The idea of having a whole team of Knight Riders with their own vehicles was, in essence, brilliantly conceived, and the show was actually a fantastic idea. It would've done even better if the network execs had let the creativity flow the way the creators wanted it to flow instead of trying to "suggest (i.e. demand)" things. Perhaps seeing less of Erica's overtly sexual advances and more of trying to build the dynamic between drivers and cars (one of the secrets of the original series), or having the relationships between them all build, the show would have survived. As it was, it should've made it.
