- Pharmacy student Aina Zinck and doctor Yrjö Kallio are a dating young couple who are drawn into a pattern of jealousy.
- There are many kinds of bogs going on in a small village community. The young doctor Yrjö Kallio charms the local women, who have booked his time so that he cannot socialize with pharmacy student Aina Zinck, who has applied for a summer job with pharmacist Jussi Ollenberg precisely because of Yrjö. Jussi, for his part, is so fond of Aina that his wife Elli feels neglected. Tuomas, the pharmacist's lackey, is caught in the middle of a feud between two women and is unable to make a choice, his heart beating for both the pharmacist's lush, widowed landlady Amalia and Yrjö's landlady Miina, a kind and thin old maid who is promised a good dowry in the form of an inherited house and money.
Topias Kinkkunen, Amalia's brother, the master cobbler, is also widowed and looking for a new hostess, but he is not keen on Kelli's self-important widowhood. Topias goes to George, whose waiting room is full of women, for advice. George is delighted to finally have a male patient, directs Topias straight to his surgery, and offers him coffee, cognacs, and cigars, but is angered when he hears this: Topias wants "lust drops" to combat his coffee craving, as he feels his wife died of a fit of pique at not getting enough coffee and suspects that Kell's widow is of the same mind.
Tuomas talks to Aina about his problem and hides under the counter of the pharmacy when Miina comes in and starts to unload her heartache on Aina. Tuomas is so moved by Miina's declaration of love that he comes out and expresses his mutual infatuation. Elli has received money from Jussi and has bought new shoes. She shows off to George and throws herself into his arms, whereupon Aina, who is delivering the mail, catches sight of them. Miina, on the other hand, surprises Tuomas and Amalia by kissing, but things come to a head when Amalia discovers that Miina would make a good life partner for Topias. Amalia sets about arranging it, and Topias is in no way reluctant to learn that Miina has money and the house she has just inherited from her dead aunt; coffee is no obstacle, "if you drink your own".
Aina, Jussi, Elli, and George spend the evening at the casino. George and Elli watch Jussi and Aina dance, and vice verse. When Jussi and Aina go out for a cold one, both George and Elli follow them separately. Elli demands a divorce, kisses George in front of the others, and spends the night at his place - albeit in a different room. Elli stays with George for three days, until George orders her to sort out her relationship with Jussi. Elli and Jussi confess their mutual love and longing, but in the midst of a tender reconciliation, Jussi accidentally says "dear, dear always", which drives Elli back to George. He is in the process of making up with Aina, who, in a new twist, decides to leave after two weeks.
Tuomas and Amalia are preparing for their wedding when Topias arrives to interrogate his intended, who he initially thinks is Aina. However, the confusion is soon cleared up and Topias and Miina have no difficulty in coming to an understanding about their marriage. Just before the wedding, Amalia loses sight of Thomas and finds the groom sleeping at the foot of a haystack.
Meanwhile, George urges Elli to finally make peace with Jussi. The couple finds common ground after Jussi meets Ellis at the piano and convinces her that there is nothing between him and Aina. George leaves a farewell note on his doorstep for the women of the village and meets Aina on an inland waterway boat, where they both travel towards a happy future together. Amalia and Thomas' happiness also seems guaranteed, as they receive a coffee pot and a hidey-hole as a wedding present.
