"The Rose and the Vagabond"
random_avenger19 July 2010
A semi-factual biopic of Abraham Ojanperä (1856-1916), one of the first Finnish opera singers. Ojanperä (Unto Salminen) evolves from a cow-herding orphan into a star singer who is celebrated all over Europe, but never gives up the memory of his first love Katri (Hilkka Helinä).

Even though the film wants to cover Ojanperä's whole life from the cradle to the grave, the plot stays somewhat consistent thanks to his lasting love for Katri, which is the most interesting part of the story anyway. The songs (performed with the voice of Sulo Saarits) are nice, as are the scenery shots of Ostrobothnia's vast plains and open skies. However, I couldn't really sink into the story and the style gets rather pompous at times (a common complaint with old Finnish films).
