By the time it starts, it's almost finished!

At only three minutes and seventeen seconds, this is one very, very short cartoon. In fact, after it started it seemed to be ending! However, is worth it!

Poor Felix. His owner is so engrossed in a crossword puzzle that he won't feed the cat until he's finished. Needing only one answer to finish (something starting with the letter-t, is seven letters and is common in Russia), Felix goes to Russia to find the answer!

Like other Felix cartoons I've seen, this one has an insane sensibility about it (such as how he gets to Russia and back) that make it fun viewing. Sure, the animation quality is amazingly simple (as were all cartoons back then) and it's silent, but who cares since it IS funny?!

Felix All Puzzled pretty good Felix the Cat entry

Warning: Spoilers
Felix won't get fed by his owner until he solves the last word in his crossword puzzle which is vertical, a seven-letter word for something found chiefly in Russia. Felix gets himself kicked by another animal in order to get to the Soviet Union and immediately is thought of as a spy when he sneaks into a house of a couple of cossacks. He gets chased constantly until he manages to get kicked back to his homeland where his owner asked if he found the crossword answer. "Nope," replies Felix, "all I found in Russia was trouble." "Trouble" turns out to be the answer as Felix and his owner both laugh. The End. Pretty amusing and very short entry in the Felix canon. Worth seeing for the cat completists. Update 5/6/08: I found a more uncensored version on Matinée At The Bijou as linked to YouTube. It might have been some stereotypical Russian gags that was edited out when I first saw this two years ago. Anyway, the ratings the same.

Wow!

This was the first Felix cartoon I'd ever seen, and I was amazed at how humorous and fun a cartoon could be even as early as 1925. Although the pacing and tone of the cartoon feels very basic (more like a moving comic strip than the short mini-movie we now expect), the pace clips entertainingly along, and the ending actually did surprise me!

Felix All Puzzled (1925)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Felix wants a glass of milk but his owner won't give it to him until he can figure out the final word to his crossword puzzle. In order to do so Felix must travel to Russia to see what the seven letter word is. This is a better than average entry in the series but it only runs three minutes, which is probably the main reason this one worked better for me. The final word to the puzzle makes for a cute joke but it's nothing too hilarious. The animation is nicely done though.

On DVD through various PD companies.
