. . . the actual meaning of this picture's title for decades. Just look at the puzzle. $21 A DAY (ONCE A MONTH). Some math whizzes contend that this means U. S. Army recruits are being promised a monthly paycheck of $651 in January, March, May, July, August, October and December, with $644 due on payday in April, June, September and November, but only $630 could be expected in February--unless a Leap Year bumped that paltry sum up to $637. Other eggheads suggest that Common Sense stipulates that ALL months will be compensated with uniform paychecks, most likely in the amount of $644. However, some outlier quibblers discount enlisted mean getting paid for Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays--perhaps if they're deployed overseas, but not otherwise. Finally, a few cynics posit that the said $21 is doled out once monthly, to cover the grunts' wages for the entire span of four weeks plus!
