I just watched the final episode of the DVD collection Heya Kids, Saturday Morning 50s collection and shows I recall, like Kukla Fran and Ollie (tho by the seventies they were hosting the CBS Children's Film Festival) or had just heard about (over and over again) like Howdy Doody, Roy Rogers, Lassie and numerous others like Magic Clown, Ding Dong School and Rootie Kazootie showed what a rich era it truly was for kids growing up in the 50s (then what happened in the 60s?) But three stand out; Pinky Lee, Winky Dinks and You (the infamous drawing on the TV screen show) and this one, Juvenile Jury.
Jack Barry hosted both JJ and Winky Dinks and You.
This episode of Juvenile Jury had five kids, ages 10 (Richard was the oldest) to 4 (scene-stealer Michelle) who were on the jury.
Right off the bat, they are asked a question and Michelle gave her answer, then said she already knew the question. Talk about a prelude to the Richard Hennie-Balloon Boy situation! Barry had to insist that nothing the kids said was pre-meditated, so Michelle was just talking off her four-year-old head (she later said she had a husband and talked about her father going to the bathroom and washing his hands).
The problems consisted of a write-in about a kid who wanted to be a vet so he would tie handkerchiefs around the paws of cats and dogs in the neighborhood, then a pretty little 3-yr-old came out and said she wanted her daddy to get a new car, cuz he drove a jalopy (her word).
Michelle insisted he needed a convertible.
Then another tyke who was 5 wanted his daddy to pull his loose tooth.
Truly delightful program in watching the kids try to be precocious. A couple of the girls (not Michelle) actually succeeded and very well.
Quite a winner.
