The funding and financing of this film ''was something of a mini-scandal'', according to the 'Oz Movies' website, ''with questions asked about bureaucrats and insiders.'' The site states: ''The film was fully funded by the AFC [Australian Film Commission]. At the time the AFC guidelines didn't allow for the filming of live shows, so the film was hastily dressed up as a comedy documentary, when in reality it was the record of a live show.''
The film's opening spoken prologue states: '': "Dear cinema goer, thank you for coming along to watch our film. It is in colour and approximately eighty five minutes in length, depending on whether you count the end credits or not ...If you look carefully, you will be able to see Bondi beach, which was once one of Australia's most famous scenic attractions...''.
The production shoot for this live performance feature film was scheduled to be filmed during early December 1989 according to an article published in the 16th October 1989 issue of 'The Sydney Morning Herald' newspaper.
The film's closing credits declare of this production that: "The Castanet Club was filmed lived on location at the North Bondi RSL Club, Bondi Beach, and Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia."
This live concert comedy performance film is dated as being first released in 1991. However, the picture was shot during late 1989 in early December that year and was completed in 1990 as per its copyright notice displayed during the end of its closing credits.
