The prison where Antônio Nuno Leal Maia is incarcerated after his first crime is the real and infamous Carandiru, in São Paulo. Considered that Carandiru was still an active prison back in the early 1980's that means Maia appears with several real inmates, some of them who might have been victims of the 1992 massacre that claimed the lives of 111 prisoners shot by the police during an invasion after a rebellion. The prison massacre story is told in the film Carandiru (2003).
