- Of unknown parentage, as he was abandoned as a child, calling himself Brahmachari (Shammi Kapoor) lives in a heavily mortgaged house, with twelve other young orphans, and a servant/former thief (Mohan Choti). He struggles everyday to make ends meet. He cons the neighbouring landlord (Asit Sen)into forcibly giving him money so that they do not make any noise when he is showing the house to prospective tenants. One day he rescues Sheetal Choudhary (Rajshree) from killing herself. She was killing herself as her childhood betrothed, Ravi Khanna (Pran), is refusing to marry now that she is poor and the Khannas are wealthy. Brahmachari commits himself to helping groom and educate Sheetal so that she can meet with the high standards of Ravi and thus win his heart. In turn she must pay him enough money to clear the mortgage loan from his house. - Brahmachari has no idea his real name. His parents told him on their deathbeds that they had found him at the side of the road, which is where he returned upon their deaths. When he grew to manhood, he never refused any orphans, and they keep getting left for him, and the mutual attachment grows and he does not consider adopting them to other homes. When the film begins in 1965, he is a bachelor who has never loved a woman, with a charge of 12 children and a dog. Working days as a magazine photographer and evenings as a musician, he still needs to find a way to pay his 200,000 rupee mortgage. His editor is angry because he took his kids on so many shoots that readership has dropped off, thinking it a children's magazine, and offers him 300 rupees for a picture of a pretty girl. When he finds one, she is about to drown herself in the ocean. He asks her if she will let him take her picture before she jumps. After that, he takes her in. Her name is Sheetal Chadhabari, but the children nickname her "Didi." She tells them that she was engaged since age 10 to Ravi Khanna, but their fathers died and he broke the agreement, yet she was still attached to him. Raavi Khanna is now a wealthy, womanizing playboy in Bombay, and he finds her rural ways disgusting, so Brahmachari visits one of Ravi's parties, where he keeps a blackface waiter who tries to speak French. There we learn about all the women he his interested in, and one, Roop, whom he has gotten pregnant. Brahmachari decides that he will help Didi become a mix of the women Ravi likes, so that she can marry him and get him to pay his 200,000 rupee mortgage.—Scott Andrew Hutchins <scottandrewh@home.com>

In 1965, working days as a magazine photographer and evenings as a musician, Brahmachari still needs to find a way to pay his 20,000-rupee mortgage. The lender has threatened that if Bhramachari defaults on the payments, the house will be auctioned off. Landlord (Asit Kumar Sen) owns the building next door, which he is trying to sell. But every buyer is put off by the noise from the orphanage. The landlord makes a deal with Brahmachari to maintain silence, when buyers come, in exchange for a regular payment in cash. His editor Mr Razdan (Brahm Bhardwaj) is angry because he has published so many photos of the kids in his magazine that readership has dropped off, as people now think that it is a children's magazine. Razdan offers him 500 rupees for a picture of a pretty girl.
When he finds a pretty girl, she is about to drown herself in the ocean. He asks her if she will let him take her picture before she jumps. After that, the woman starts following Bhramachari and says that she has nowhere else to go. He takes her in just like all the other orphans staying with him. Her name is Sheetal Chaudhary (Rajshree), but the children nickname her "Didi." She tells them that she was engaged since age 10 to Ravi Khanna (Pran). Ravi's family moved to Bombay. And then their respective fathers die. When Sheetal's mother meets Ravi's family in Bombay, they break the agreement as their family is rich now and they don't want a daughter-n-law from a poor household. Yet she was still attached to him. Her maternal fixed her marriage to another boy, but that's when Sheetal ran away from home. Sheetal came to Bombay to meet Ravi, but he refuses to even recognize her. As she cannot return home, Sheetal decided to commit suicide.
Raavi Khanna is now a wealthy, womanizing playboy in Bombay, and he finds her rural ways disgusting. Brahmachari visits one of Ravi's parties, where he pretends to be a waiter who tries to speak French. There he learns about all the women he is interested in, and one, Roopa (Mumtaz Askari), whom he has gotten pregnant. Brahmachari learns that Ravi is interested in women who wear modern clothes, can speak fluent English and carry themselves in high society. Brahmachari decides that he will help Sheetal become a mix of the women Ravi likes, so that she can marry him and get him to pay his 200,000-rupee mortgage. Brahmachari transforms Sheetal at great cost to himself & finally takes her to joints which Ravi frequents.
Murli (Jagdeep) and Basant (Manmohan) are bootleggers and petty thieves who are caught transporting illegal booze in Kirtandas's (Dhumal) taxi. The duo claims that the booze does not belong to them and must belong to the taxi driver, who is arrested. The duo also steals a Sari that Kirtandas had bought for her daughter on her birthday. Murli takes the Sari and presents to his girlfriend. Turns out Murli's girlfriend is Kirtandas's daughter. Kirtandas kicks Murli out of his house. A few days later, Murli disguises as a woman and comes in front of Kirtandas's taxi. Kirtandas is forced to take the woman home and that's how Murli again reunites with his girlfriend. Kirtandas returns home with the woman's slippers and discovers Murli with his daughter. Kirtandas again throws Murli out of the house.
As Ravi gets interested in Sheetal, he tries to be rid of Roopa who is now pressuring him for marriage. Sheetal is living with Brahmachari & finds out how caring & sensitive he is. She is torn, whether to marry Ravi, whom she hates, or proclaim her love to Brahmachari, & disappoint him as he is waiting for the money.
Ravi proposes to Sheetal, but she refuses him & tells Brahmachari that she loves him. Then Ravi approaches Sheetal's mom (Ratnamala) to ask for Sheetal's hand in marriage, in exchange for money. The mother forces Sheetal to leave Brahmachari & come with her. When Roopa finds out, she decides to go to Ravi's mom with his handwritten letters as proof. But Ravi has already stolen those letters from Roopa. But Brahmachari's cook (Mohan Choti) (who also happens to be a part time pocket thief), steals Ravi's wallet which has those letters.
Meanwhile Ravi bribes the banker to throw Brahmachari & his children out of the mortgaged house. Now as Brahmachari is about to be thrown out, Ravi approaches him & offers to save the house in exchange for Brahmachari breaking Sheetal's heart & driving her to Ravi. Brahm reluctantly agrees to save his kids.
He pretends to be caught in bed with another woman, by Sheetal & that drives Sheetal to agree to marry Ravi. Now Roopa tries to leave her newborn baby with Brahmachari & Brahmachari finds that Roopa was secretly married to Ravi. He then finds the proof by getting those letters (written by Ravi to Roopa) from his cook.
He goes to confront Ravi, meanwhile Ravi kidnaps Brahmachari's kids. When Brahmachari arrives, he has to hand over the letters to Ravi. As soon as Ravi gives instructions to release the kids, Brahmachari attacks. Ravi's mom arrives & sees the letters & accepts Roopa as her daughter-in-law. Sheetal marries Brahmachari & all is well.
