The futility of the struggle against the illusion that is the world
boblipton3 April 2010
Here we have a sequel of sorts to Tashlin's THE TANGLED ANGLER. Peter Pelican -- who played Elmer Fudd to the Bugs Bunny of the fish he was trying to catch, is now Longfellow's blacksmith, and as he stands under the spreading chestnut tree, it keeps dropping stickleburrs on him and worse, the horse he is trying to shoe -- and the horse kicks.

This is a pretty good cartoon, and Tashlin manages to vary the way the pelican and the tree manage to annoy each other to keep things interesting. Yet, at the same time, I think that Tashlin was trying to say something different and I have the oddest feeling that the tree is in some ways the World Tree -- and that Peter is missing out on a chance to escape the illusion that is the world.

Oh, well, probably just an illusion on my part. Enjoy the gags.
