The Room of Video Game Tv Shows
rheinbergerleo24 February 2021
This show is so bad, so poorly animated and so mind bogglingly stupid that it manages to be the best thing ever made. By all accounts, I really should give it a low score, but this show is so unintentionally funny that I can't bring myself to do it. The motion capture is so terrible that it's hilarious, the plots are , the voice acting is...actually fairly decent for the most part, and the facial expressions are a gift from god himself. Please watch this show, it's a good time whether you're sober or drunk (although it's probably best that you get drunk beforehand).

Coming out of the massively successful Super Nintendo series of the same name by Rare, Donkey Kong Country is a 3D animated series created for tv by Erika Strobel and starring a mixed bag of voice actors as its characters. Donkey Kong, the banana eating ape and eventual ruler lives at his home, Kongo Bongo Island, where he must protect the Crystal Coconut from the evil King K. Rool and others trying to steal its power. The animation is bad, the acting is bad, the plots are bad. And each episode typically has two original songs with the cast of characters singing, usually badly. It's a children's show certainly but the nostalgia and ridiculousness still had me grinning ear to ear whenever I threw an episode on in the background. Bad but still good.

"Here he comes, banana-slammer!" Urg, burn down that banana tree and salt the earth...
Wow, this show was terrible! I even thought it was horrible as a kid, it was so astonishingly ugly and so boring, I thought it was completely awkward to watch and quite charmless. To each their own but to seriously be a fan of this show you've just gotta be nuts! Not that the game could have by any means ever easily leant itself to the making of a show, but I still can't believe they took a gander at such a wonderful SNES platforming classic and made something so unappealing and rancid out of it, surely somebody could have done something better, anything!! The hideous animation was so stiff and clumsy, everything always happened in the same three or so locations, and there was at least two brain-cell killing musical numbers per episode - nothing is even remotely reflective of the simple pure greatness of those video games when Donkey King is singing a cool Caribbean-sounding song about his love for Dixie Kong and her creepy ape-boobs! Some may think this king of the cheesy late 90s animated kids shows will be forgiven as a product of its time, but no...I'm afraid it sucked then and it sucks now even more! Purest garbage, 3 Eddy the Yeti songs out of 10!!!

Holy Cow, A Nintendo Related Product Dic or 4kids didn't grab!

It's hard to describe whether this show was good, or bad. it was kind of stupid to say the least. Particularly "The legend of the crystal coconut" which was a VHS that had 4 episodes, in bad chronological order. However, it delivered a donkey Kong feel, and i won't lie, i heavily dislike musicals (unless they have music that was written by either Slayer or Iron Maiden) but some of the songs throughout the shows were catchy, Particularly "Booty Booty" and "Big Bog Monster" and "the mirror never lies" (which reminded me of System of a down. I can't believe i can make that kind of reference.)

Anyways, Donkey Kong is a fun loving ape who seems to screw things up or do something wrong at the beginning of the episode and then has to right his wrongs, with the help of his nephew (or "little buddy" as he constantly calls him) Diddy Kong. Every now and then, his friend Funky Kong, his guardian, Cranky Kong, and his love interest, Candy Kong, make appearances, But they're not much more than just characters.

DK's mistakes usually end him up fighting King. K. Rool, with his bumbling right-hand Krocs, Klump and Krusha. but in some episodes, different enemies have come around, such as Captain Scurvy and his first and second mates.

I remember watching "The legend of the Crystal coconut" how many times when i was 10, and how i remember my dad eyeing the special effects (which were really good) the show had an engaging story for a guy at that age and it was Nintendo's character, so just watching donkey Kong for an hour and a few minutes was entertaining.

Nowadays, i'd recommend this to someone between the age of 7 to 10 who's really into Nintendo, because that's all it will appeal to. anyone younger won't really get it, and anyone older will be laughing at how stupid some of it is.

Donkey kong has a huge booty in this show and it was a very nice feature. not to mention his singing is very sexy when he says he'll shower you with coconut cream pies. everyone else in the show is gay except for the monkey that looks like etika and the lizard with the nipples

Banana slammer!!!!
billosaurus31 March 2017
This Is a stupid, messy show that fails from the first episode to the last episode. Yet the sheer depth of it's failure comes out on the other side as an odd kind of success. We have donkey Kong, a hero, banana cream pie connoisseur, banana chomper, lover and idol of king Kong, collector of the planet of the apes treading cards, and future king of Kongo bongo island. He's incredibly stupid, and I mean the depth of his stupidity really truly is incredible. He thinks a pirate talking to him through a broken mirror is his reflection, making him think he is a pirate, and one time, he had his brain put into a robot, and it took a whole song for diddly to convince him to look at his hands and figure out he is metal. Donkey Kong has a teacher and possible (grand?)father, called cranky Kong, who is a bitter old git and is also one of the only smart people on the show.(I feel your pain, cranky.) In fact, cranky is a genius. Probably a better hero than donkey Kong. Donkey Kong has a girlfriend called candy, who looks different to her video game design and is also an aggressive, and sometimes manipulative bitch to donkey Kong, though she has a few tender moments and compliments him, sometimes she cancels dates on a whim over petty reasons that aren't even donkey Kong's fault.(donkey Kong, you can do better.) Diddy, an annoying though supportive right hand monkey of DK, is now stripped of his powers that he had in the games, and Is helpless like a little kid. Candy Kong works for a lovable ass hole, called bluster. Bluster runs his moms barrel factory, which candy plans to buy. Bluster tries to poach candy from donkey Kong. Dixie is a sweet, lovable little monkey who loves diddly Kong, and her pet lobster. Oppressing our heroes is king k.rool, an aptly named tyrant who is actually Honourable, dopey and a dirty coward deep down, but he can be vicious and deadly at times. He has general clump, the classic sycophantic soldier who takes k.rool's abuse into his stride. And krusha, a mentally challenged and child-like bodyguard with the hidden potential to be a heartless, diabolical genius. This show is goofy, dumb and proud of it. The stories are cliché but they acknowledge and make fun of these clichés. This isn't a serious or slick show, the animation is strange and surreal by today's standards, but so is the animation in the games. It simply reflects 1990s and early 2000s TV budget animation. I'm sure at the time it was amazing. The best merit are the songs. The devious bastard, Kaptain scurvy and his lackeys, the Italian-accented cutlass crock and the weird green crock sing awesome shanties about how awesome it is to be a pirate. Donkey Kong himself has an amazing voice. Metal head has diddly screech his lines, and it rips off daft punk's around the world, but donkey Kong's voice makes it worth listening to. I'm nobody's hero actually manages to be genuinely sad. Poor old donkey Kong. Most of the songs are epic, this show is very fun and charming, it isn't challenging, or epic, but its cute. The characters are interesting, the animation allows for some comical expressions, and of course, the intro, and all the music in fact, is kick ass. Hay-ho, look out down below. Here comes banana slammer!

Must-see TV for 'Breaking Bad' and 'Saul' fans
qazlkjh10124 April 2020
An incredibly underrated show that pushed CGI to its absolute furthest reaches, years before James Cameron's Avatar. The characterization is what drives the story and not the other way around. An impeccable attention to details keeps the narrative grounded and consequential. It's these consequences and their impact on the characters that drive the show's drama and its primary throughline as an exploration of the American zeitgeist via Donkey Kong's relationship to the monkey with the boobies. Cranky Kong is good too. I like the bananas and the episode with the haircut. Good music too. Why my pee pee wiggle?

Not bad for a numskull of an ape!
thunder-beam15 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Donkey Kong Country video games have been a very big part of my life growing up. I didn't actually play the games as I preferred watching my brother or a friend play them but it was still awesome to the MAX!!!!!!

Now the cartoon show..... It was pretty good! I liked it a lot as a kid and the way Teletoon advertised it. The opening always got me into the banana slama world of DK and company. Most of the characters are presented, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Candy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, the kremlings King K. Rool, Klump, Krusha, and the rest of the green cronies. It had some new characters exclusive only to the show like Eddie the mean old Yeti, Bluster Kong, Captain Scurvy and his two hench pirates but no Kiddy Kong, or Wrinkly Kong or any of the animal buddies or big boss baddies.

The plot of the show is based around Donkey Kong of tropical Kongo Bongo island, a lovable but dimwitted ape who found a magical crystal in the shape of a coconut with mysterious powers and that can grant any wish. The coconut's seemingly unlimited properties saw good in DK and made him to become Kongo Bongo's future ruler and protector of the crystal which Cranky keeps at house in a dome until he is ready. DK and the gang also visit an ancient temple called Inka Dinka Doo, that holds the mysterious and wise but impatient idol Inka Dinka that helps the characters from time to time. King K. Rool and his hilarious henchmen try everything and I mean EVERYTHING to get it and use it's power to rule the island. Very different than just taking DK's banana hoard eh??

Despite the absence of the rest of the original characters from the games, the show had it's own barrel of laughs! The puns for example I found were funny most of the time and a lot of references to famous apes (listen carefully for them ;). The voice acting was fun and enjoyable to listen to. All the voices suited the characters so well, I could always picture that is the way they would sound, with the exception of Dixie and her character design :( Everyone sings in every episode (sometimes more than once). A lot of people are annoyed by that. I guess having the show be a musical makes a little sense since the games had unbelievable music by the genius David Wise, Eveline Fischer and Robin Beanland and I did like some of the songs- "Pirate's Scorn" "Nobody's Hero" I've got no family tree" "Kung Fu Master" and "Be Bad" to name a few. King K. Rool, Klump and Krusha are my absolute favorites in the show, they are very entertaining to watch and play off one another so well. Diddy's laughter brightens my day and DK's voice actor Richard Yearwood is a great choice, and is a really good singer. King K. Rool's Shakespearean voice is awesome and he sings great too. Scurvy the pirate tries his hand to get the crystal too claiming it to be his birthright in the name of his great, great, great grandpappy.

There's sometimes a pretty decent amount of character development that shows in the 90's like the Mega Man cartoon really lacked. DKC attempts a lot as characters will sing- sometimes in different styles of music, and like the games, a bit of good ol' animated slapstick is present and the pacing of the show can be flexible. The writing can be witty, good morals- sometimes a little rushed but all-around entertaining.

Now here is the problem with the show. Like Cybersix, I think it could have done A LOT more than it did. It had a good set up and a lot of mystery and questions like, who was Scurvy's grandpappy, where did the crystal coconut come from? Did someone make it? Who built the temple of Inka Dinka Doo? I like how K. Rool tries so many different ways to get the coconut or other means of control over the island but I felt it could have gone directions to let's say, the origin of the island and the Kong family and flashbacks of Cranky's days as the original DK batting Mario. I didn't mind that some of the characters are not here as sometimes it works better than adding too many to lose focus on but I did miss the animal buddies. The CGI animation was nowhere near as good as Reboot or Beast Wars but I think it got better in the 2nd season. It definitely was targeted towards kids but I think it could have been JUST as good as Beast Wars had the writers had more fun creating the world of Kongo Bongo and it's denizens.

Overall, I still enjoyed the show a tad more than I did as a lad. It was not a master piece, but memorable and nostalgic. If your interested then grab a banana and swing into Donkey Kong Country!!!

This show is a real BANANA SLAMMA
silvergalaxy-2812012 October 2018
This beautiful show conveys emotions beautifully. It has the most beautiful animations at first I thought it was live action. I have never seen a show this good. The songs are beautifully sung, An absolute zero shows how donkey Kong is giving up even though he didn't do anything. I give this show a 10/10 for the characters, animations, emotion, songs, and story.

I'd shower this show in coconut cream pies
This show is perfect, the Bible even ripped it off with the story of Samson. The Christian lords loved the show and I can confirm that because they spoke to me every time asking if they can join me in watching. The show didn't last for 20 seasons either, it knew to stop before the lesser minded people got angry. I don't want to say too much about it because even after watching the entire series for the 51st time this year, I don't truly understand it. It's too much to handle for my feeble mind yet I still love it. PLEASE give it a watch and you'll see what I mean. It's beautifully animated especially for 1997, the motion capture was on par with Thanos from Marvel's Avengers movies. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go and watch the Banana Slamma.

Amazing animated series about everyone's favorite Nintendo Ape
ukt-6818416 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This animated series from 1997 is everything I ever wanted, and can definitely be enjoyed by both hard-core fans of the Donkey Kong franchise, and the people lookng for a fun animated series.

The characters are in my opinion part of what makes this show so great. The diverse mix of both male and female characters and their different personalities and attributes makes every episode dynamic. We have the main character Donkey Kong (DK), who in my opinion is the best (and hottest) character with his charismatic personality, cool abilities, catchphrase (Banana Slamma) and internal confilcts about how he wants to spend his life. This inner conflict is made clear in the episode "Double Date Trouble" where Donkey Kong has to choose between his social life with his all-time best friend Diddy Kong, his romantic relationship with Candy Kong, and his life as the protector of Kongo Bongo. Diddy Kong is a solid side character with a lot of personality that in the beginning mostly is used as a tool to make DK share his thoughts and emotions with the audience in their private conversations. Candy Kong is a really hot female side character that acts as DK's romantic interest in the series. She adds a layer to every episode as DK now has to maintain his relationship with her on top of protecting Kongo Bongo from danger. Cranky Kong is in my opinion the second best character. He's lovable, yet serious when he has to protect Kongo Bongo, and he has a lot of knowledge that helps the main characters. The crystal coconut, which is under his protection is used by him to move the plot forward in a good way. The coconut also has a set of diverse magical powers that fit perfectly into this series as it creates unique situations that are enjoyable to watch. Other characters include the coolest character, Funky Kong, the narcissistic Bluster Kong, the main cast's friend Dixie Kong, and the main villain: Kinky Rule, a crocodile who wants to steal the crystal coconut to make him the king of Kongo Bongo. I am also happy the creators chose to cast both Apes and Crocodiles, as it gives the show more diversity.

Regarding the animation of the series, I just think it's amazing. The character models are details and the movement is fluid. I also respect the desicion to make the series in 3D. Small details also make the series stand out, like the expansion of pupils to express certain emotions. The animation doesn't ruin the energy of the most exciting scenes, such as the fight scenes, and everything feels very real. The voice acting is also spot-on.

The episodes aren't very formulated, which is very good as it gives the series variation. Some episodes focus on the struggle to protect the crystal coconut, while other episodes are about the personal struggles of Donkey Kong and the people around him. One thing that is consistent in nearly every episode, however, is the appearence of music numbers sung by different characters of the series. The singing voice of Donkey Kong specifically is stellar, and the melody, lyrics and dance moves are brilliant as well. The most important song of the series, the theme song, is also great, if not the best of the songs. It is energetic, catchy, and shows what the average viewer should expect from the series, perfection. Not only that, but the climaxes, specifically the fighting scenes are great and energetic, and are often in some way unique, which makes every fight worth watching.

"Donkey Kong Country: The animated series" is an amazing animated series and will fulfill the expectations of any viewer. The animation, voice acting, and storytelling is stellar, and the dynamic character interactions between the likable and deep characters makes the series worth a watch. The series gives you everything: Romance, Humour, Action and Music through a set of varying storylines. I really can't find anything negative to say about this series, and will give it a solid 10 out of 10 rating. By far the best Nintendo animated series.

Banana Slamma! I love this animated show! I'm going bananas for Donkey Kong!
abalpn-9947225 September 2019
I've played Donkey Kong Country and the rest of the games on Nintendo. I have the VHS of Donkey Kong Country: Legend of the Crystal Coconut but now I watch all the episodes on YouTube. It's great that the show had the characters from the first SNES game including King K. Rool. He's my favorite villain in Donkey Kong Country. When I watched the show, it felt like I was playing the SNES game. I like all the action including DK swinging and punching the Kremlings. DK and Diddy are still my favorite duo just like Mario and Luigi. I've always wanted to wear DK's tie.

chavo-3061724 November 2021
This show is the best thing my eyes have ever laid eyes on. Me and my son watch this show every day and then proceed to pray to donkey Kong and diddy Kong every night before bed. They are love and life and my pride and joy. They make me happy when I'm sad and this show is a artistic masterpiece. It has 11/10 animation and a story that rivals that of the Marvel infinity saga and The entire Star Wars cannon. This show has been the biggest part of my life and would recommend it to everyone in the entire world.

Good tv version of video games
Op_Prime12 January 2000
All and all, this is a good show and lives up to the Donkey Kong Country games. The CGI is very good and well done. A lot of the episodes are good but the songs are what hurts this show. You see, every episode the characters sing at least one song. In my opinion, it slows the show down. Worth a look.

Back in my snot nose punk days as a kid I use to watch this show. At the time the graphics were one of the best. Now looking at it it looks so hash.

Nevertheless, DKC was a good cartoon for us kids back when TV was worth watching. All the DK gang were enjoyable to watch and listen to.

Last Words: It was a good show. Many probably have forgotten, but I will never forget this show.

The Donkey Kong!
raben-8114629 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Donkey Kong and his friends had a long life since the early 1980s with his self titled game with Mario trying to save a girl from the evil monkey on various platforms. The adventure continues as an computer generated end of 1990s cartoon with Donkey Kong and his friends that are in their daily battles against the villains from the Super Nintendo Donkey Kong games. The animation and songs they may be not the best of the 1990s, but all you have to do is join the silly fun. This is not just for the kids, but also the adult Nintendo and 1990s cartoon fans too as this show made a lot of internet memes.

Meh
Koneko15 October 2005
I'm a fan of the Donkey Kong games, so I was kind of excited when I saw they'd made this into a show. I'd had great experiences with my other favorite video game heroes, Earthworm Jim and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sadly, I found myself disappointed with the show. It was made for younger audiences, which can always lower a rating with older fans. I accepted the overall plot of K. Rool being after the Crystal Coconut. It was kind of corny, but I could get past that.

Now, as much as I love music, I believe that having a song in pretty much every episode slowed things down. DK's voice actor had a lovely singing voice, yes, but the singing (in my opinion) got in the way of things. They usually had poor lyrics too. The dialogue wasn't the greatest either, but it wasn't horrid.

My major complaint is that I wasn't happy with how some of the characters were dealt with. I didn't mind the addition of Bluster, though I think they went overboard with his character flaws. I didn't mind the absence of certain characters. I simply would have liked to see them come in and do something or other. The only one I really wished would have made it was Wrinkly Kong. Actually, the only two characters I had a problem with were Candy and Dixie. I didn't mind Candy's design change. It might bother most fans of the game, but I took it as an improvement. Her personality lacked severely though. I doubt the Candy from the games was the smartest cookie in the cracker barrel, but at least she was helpful and kind. The Candy in this show is essentially useless, bossy and annoyingly shallow. She was a bit of a control freak too.

Dixie wasn't much better. I could accept the change in design, even if I didn't care for it. Again, it was personality that really got to me. She lost her pizazz. She was much more passive and bland. She had no spunk, and for some reason lost her animals on a continuous basis. (What did she do to those animals, anyway?) Dixie was one of my favorite characters from the game, so it was disheartening to see such an extreme change that wasn't for the better. I'm not sure why they limited themselves. Had they kept her original spunk, they could have had so many more opportunities for show ideas.

King K. Rool and the Kremlings also become fairly blah in the show. They were a bit on the dippy side. I know that was done because they wanted to aim the show at younger audiences, but I still don't care for the changes.

I didn't hate the show. I watched it. I was merely disappointed in it. People who are huge fans of the video games and would throw a fit if any injustice were done to it should steer clear of this show. It strays from the video game a little too much. (I know in some cases they need to stray a little to make it work.) Those unfamiliar with the games or are only "meh" fans might like it, or just not care one way or another.

A masterpiece
technoboiyt17 March 2024
This show is so cool and good-looking that I really feel an amazing feeling while watching it. The characters look so fluid and amazing, it's almost like I'm playing a game on the PlayStation 10! Also this show has a lot of monkey-ing, around. We evolved from monkeys so everyone love monkeys! I also love Donkey Kong because he is funny and cool and I like to play Donkey Kong Jr. Math because it is funny and cool and it has monkey in it! This show is a 10/10. Would definitely watch again, I'd definitely recommend this to Breaking Bad fans as they are both very similar. Thank you Rareware for making a masterpiece.

This is god reincarnate as a tv show
yoshmoment18 February 2024
Say what you will about the writing, the animation, or the songs. Donkey Kong Country lives up to its videogame counterpart's expectations and is the best series to ever be broadcasted on tv.

So much to praise here. Donkey Kong's singing voice is godly. I dream about his big hairy badonkey-donk every night. Eddie the Mean Old Yeti is something Nintendo never, and probably never will consider, and I hate to live with that fact. He would've been good in Tropical Freeze. I however give it a 9/10 because Diddy Kong is the most jarring character in this adaptation. Diddy's singing is the polar opposite of DK's singing. Donkey's singing makes me levitate, Diddy's singing makes my ears bleed.

Singing, Dancing, Slapstick . . . What Else Can Make This Show Worse?
BlackX24 October 2002
There's two words that for a lot of people never seem to go together well. "TV" and "Video Games". Sometimes they work, but this is not one of those times.

You're favourite characters from the famous series that Rare(which has now, like rumor predicted, left Nintendo, or Nintendo sold it, whatever your view) really boosted. Donkey Kong has come a long way. It started as the villain in what I believe was the first Mario game. In a King-Kong like style, now used in Mario games by Bowser and fellow Koopas, he kidnapped Mario's girl, Princess Peach.

Since then, his son(the missing-from-the-show-and-practically-not-counted-as-a-character-in-the-fra nchise-anymore, Donkey Kong Jr.) has rescued him(but has only been seen in rereleased games since Mario Tennis), he's found a bunch of other monkey pals, including Diddy, and has been jumping, pumping and many other ping words until King K.Rool, the evil croc villain of the Donkey Kong Country series, kidnapped him in Donkey Kong 2.

Well, ignoring some characters, like the Baby Monkey from DK3 and DK64, the series goes back to the days when Donkey Kong, apparently, was a selfish, macho, self-aware guy, Diddy was the party-guy who was forced by instinct to look after him, and Dixie and Candy were only suspecting love interests, making my previous explanations of the whole video game run obsolete. Cranky, the old geiser, now protects a Crystal Coconut with enough power to rule the island they inhabit, the reason King K. Rool is after them, and doesn't give a lick as to how Donkey kong does it, unlike his advising ways in the game.

With stupid time-filler songs that will either repeat themselves again and again in your head or will immediately vanish from your memory, the same back and forth "excitement" over who has the Coconut between the crocs and apes, and maybe a change of setting or a strange thing(the mines and DK becoming a baby comes to mind) supposed to be a so-called "plot", and slapstick comedy aided by the fact they turned Donkey kong into a guy who doesn't care about a thing unless he gets food, like a hairy Shaggy of Scooby-Doo, and Diddy being a monkey that seems high, loves to laugh(and apparently sing) and panicks every 2 minutes make this show pretty pathetic. It can't even get close to capturing the fun of the games.
