It's a very windy day in Greendale and Ajay has organized a special Kite Flying Festival. Everyone has entered. Julian and Charlie try to build the perfect kite but can't agree over their designs. Pat delivers a special long kite tail to Ted. Ted has built a large box kite. Jess chases the tail into the kite and is then terrified when a sudden gust of wind carries him aloft. Pat and Ted give chase as the Jess Kite flies over Greendale. Julian and Charlie have built the ideal kite by compromising and combining both their designs. Finally Pat and Ted arrive at the Kite Festival just as the Jess Kite flies in among the other entrants. Julian and Charlie use their kite to perform a special loop-the-loop trick around Jess' kite, which enables them to pull it safely to the ground. Jess wins a prize for being the Bravest Kite.

Julian and Pat are playing in a five-a-side children's and parents football match in Greendale. Julian is worried that Pat won't play very well. Its years since Pat last played football and he hasn't had a chance to brush up his skills. After a busy day rushing to deliver the post, where Pat finds himself catching flying parcels, heading oranges, vaulting fences and weaving in and out of flocks of sheep, Pat is more than fit for the game and scores the winning goal.

It's Pat's day off and Ajay has invited him to be a train driver for the day. Pat is thrilled but soon discovers that being a train driver is harder work than he supposed. The train is making good speed when Pat notices that the boiler is dangerously low on water. Everyone rushes down to the River Pen with buckets, thermos flasks or anything else they can find to refill the water tank. With disaster averted the Greendale Rocket sets off once more. Ajay soon gets up speed again but Pat notices that the carriage has become disconnected from the train. They hurriedly reverse and reconnect the train. "Surely nothing else can go wrong" says Pat but he's spoken too soon. Alf's sheep have wandered onto the line and the train has to stop for a third time. Pat suggests that the best way to get the sheep back to Greendale is by train and the passengers find themselves riding with some woolly companions. That night, back at home, Julian asks Pat which job he would rather do - postman or train driver. "Postman" replies Pat. "It's much easier!"

The village decides to do a job swap as a fund raising event for the school. Pat will act as judge for the day to see how everyone does. Ted works at the caf... for the day and invents a brilliant system for pouring multiple cups of tea - before he realises he doesn't have any customers. Nisha and Sarah decorate Dr Gilbertson's house and end up wallpapering over the door. The Rev. Timms tries to look after Alf's sheep and soon finds that a real flock is rather different to a human flock. Alf tries to teach a PE Class and finds it easier to pretend that the children are sheep and herd them. Throughout the day Pat helps everyone as they get into difficulties. At the end of the day Mrs. Goggins tallies up all the sponsor money. Hooray! They've reached their target.

Julian is thrilled when he's picked to bring home the school guinea pig, Dotty. The next morning he's distressed to discover that Dotty has escaped. Pat offers to look for her whilst he's on his rounds. All day long Pat keeps seeing strange things. Firstly Mrs. Goggins's knitting seems to move on it's own, then Julia Pottage's old fur hat runs off down the path on it's own and finally the station caf... tea cosy jumps off the table and runs out of the door. Pat is convinced that he's seeing things but Jess knows better. It's naughty Dotty who has been trying to find a cosy nest all day and has been hitching a lift in Pat's van. Back at home Pat is astonished to see his own postman's cap suddenly moving across the table. He lifts it up to discover Dotty underneath. Jess springs at her but Dotty quickly runs away and dashes into her old cage once more. Home sweet home for Dotty!

It's time for the traditional Midsummer Market but it can't start until Alf's pigeon, Cedric, comes down from the church belfry. Traditionally the ringing of the church bell always starts the market. Everyone tries different ways to get Cedric down but nothing works until Pat has the bright idea of luring him down with music. The Reverend plays a variety of instruments, ending with a boogie-woogie solo on the piano. Cedric is charmed down and the Midsummer Market can get underway.

The kids are all making sculptures or doing drawings of "My Most Exciting Thing" to show to their parents for the school open day. As they each draw their picture they reminisce about their different favourite things. For Julian it is finding the Greendale Rocket and driving her, whilst for Bill it is the time he was a clown in the Circus. The twins remember how scary it was when Pat rescued them from the ice whilst Charlie makes a wonderful sculpture of an alien and recalls looking for flying saucers in Greendale. Sarah Gilbertson is at a loss as to what to draw until Pat arrives with some pastel crayons wrapped in spotty paper. She quickly draws a picture of everyone with chicken pox and recalls that her favourite moment was when everyone in Greendale took her advice to gargle with warm water and got better. Pat is so inspired by the children's drawings that he draws his own "favourite thing": a map of Greendale with all the children's artwork stuck onto it.
