- Herman the mouse attempts to break up the smarmy friendship between the cat and dog of the house in order to raid the icebox.
- While cats and dogs are natural enemies, such is not the case in the house where Herman the mouse lives. They are very good friends indeed, and work together to make Herman's life a hard life. Herman tries to break up their friendship, and divert their attention from guarding the cheese in the refrigerator, and almost succeeds but they make up in time to prevent Herman getting the cheese. They give chase and Herman takes refuge in a jug of wine. The cat and the dog drink up the wine while trying to get to Herman and end up drunk, happy and blissful...and so is Herman.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- The cat and dog of the house spend their time singing off-key about what great friends they are and using their popguns to prevent Herman the mouse from raiding the icebox. Herman marks off the 29th day of February on his calendar: that makes 29 days of starvation. His only chance to get food is to break up the smarmy friendship between the cat and dog. That means reminding them that they are natural enemies. While the two of them are asleep, Herman puts a tube over the dog's nose that connects to the gas stove. He puts a gas mask on the cat. When the dog wakes up, he thinks the cat tried to kill him. The two are soon in a knife fight, but then they overhear Herman laughing and bragging to himself about his little plot. The natural enemies immediately resume their unnatural friendship and cook up a plot of their own.—J. Spurlin
