Director Christopher McQuarrie has set the bar incredibly high for himself when it comes to the Mission: Impossible franchise, with both Rogue Nation and Fallout widely regarded as two of the best action movies of the 21st century. It speaks volumes about his contributions to the series that the first four Mission films each had somebody different behind the camera, but McQuarrie has now stepped up to tackle four in a row.
As if that wasn’t enough pressure, the seventh and eighth installments are set to shoot back-to-back, which must be a logistical nightmare given the precision-designed action sequences and constant narrative rug-pulls that have become staples of the adrenaline-fueled action blockbusters. The proposed location shooting in Venice and Rome was delayed indefinitely due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but filming has continued in England regardless, at least until Mission: Impossible 7 becomes the latest high-profile project to get shut down as the crisis escalates.

It’s the brand that would spawn the Fallout franchise, and this throwback to late-‘90s roleplaying was directed by none other than the prestigious Brian Fargo. Sadly, while this sequel – which arrives on Switch (in its 2015 Director’s Cut form) 30 years after the first game – shows fleeting flashes of old school charm, as a game it is ugly, clunky and unwelcoming, and it’s a technical mess on Switch.
The post-apocalyptic setting here is barren Arizona, and your four-person squad operate as Desert Rangers, policing the titular wastes. You go with the default team or create your own – selecting skills, perks, appearance etc – and then, via the tried and tested world map, you make your way through the sprawling gameworld toward your objective, dodging radiation zones and trying not to die from dehydration. Find a settlement and the view moves closer in, and you explore the region in real-time.

Mission: Impossible — Fallout just gave Tom Cruise the best opening weekend of his career at the massive Chinese box office, racking up a strong $77.3 million.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” dominated the weekend box office in China with an excellent $77 million opening three days. It was helped by massive support from Alibaba, the e-commerce giant which has plowed billions of dollars into cinema.
Few other titles offered much resistance. “Fallout” earned a 75% share of the total box office. The total for the weekend was a decidedly average $102 million for the top 10 titles.
“Fallout” played 144,000 screenings per day according to local data tracker Ent Group. It scored $24.6 million on Friday, $28.7 million on Saturday and $22.8 million on Sunday.
The score was the biggest for the “Mission Impossible” franchise, some 83% ahead of “Rogue Nation,” and the biggest three day opening for star Tom Cruise.
It was also a new high for IMAX. The film earned $7.4 million from 529 IMAX screens, beating recently set records by “The Meg” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”

As summer comes to a close, three of the seasons major releases have hit box office milestones, with Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians” topping the charts for a third consecutive weekend while crossing $100 million in domestic grosses.
With rave reviews and a devoted following from Asian-American moviegoers, “Crazy Rich Asians” has shown greater endurance than even the most optimistic analyst could have expected. After a $24 million second weekend and a drop-off of just six percent, WB is estimating a third weekend total of $22 million, a drop-off of just 10 percent. With Labor Day Monday included, director Jon M. Chu’s film is looking at a $28 million four-day weekend, which will push its domestic total to just under $117 million.

Television was suppose to kill it. Then VHS. And, ultimately, streaming.
But this summer, moviegoing was very much alive and kicking, with a projected near-record domestic box office haul of $4.8 billion, nearly toppling 2013’s banner $4.87 billion, per ComScore and Deadline calculations. That’s when we started the clock on April 27, when Avengers: Infinity War blasted this summer off with the biggest stateside opening of all-time at $257.7M.
Last summer reached an 11-year low of $3.86 billion (for the same April 27-Labor Day period), and it was the stale franchises to blame, not Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. As AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron told Deadline before Infinity War opened, moviegoers aren’t making Sophie’s Choices between the cinema and streaming.
“Netflix was in business in February (when Black Panther opened), and they’ll do good business when Avengers: Infinity War opens. The American consumer and the global consumer can handle all this content.

While this year’s Summer gaming drought wasn’t as stark as year’s past, there’s no denying the ridiculous amount of hype-inducing games coming out this Fall. As we did with movies last week, our staff is taking a look at the video games they’re most excited to play as the leaves begin to change colors.
Summer, traditionally, is a great time to catch up on your backlog of games. With most studios holding off on major releases (aside from a few) during the Summer, most gamers know this time period to be relatively slower. That’s about to change. Next month alone is bringing a crazy amount of Aaa games, and it won’t slow down through the Holiday season.

Jed Mercurio, creator of BBC breakout drama Bodyguard, is eyeing a second season of the terror thriller after stellar opening ratings and an endorsement from former Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

A solid opening in China could keep Disney’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” on course to beat its 2015 predecessor.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp” reeled in $21.5 million (RMB147 million) on Friday, according to data from China Box Office at 10 p.m. local time. It comfortably dominated holdover titles, including “The Island” and “The Meg,” and a rash of newcomers, to claim a 66% box office share.
To date, the film has grossed $209 million in North America and $257 million in international markets, for a global haul of $466 million. That leaves it behind the previous installment in the franchise, which earned $180 million in its domestic release and $339 million from international territories, for a lifetime total of $519 million.
Disney needs decent performances in China and Japan, where it releases on Aug. 31, to overtake those milestones. Last time out, “Ant-Man” earned $105 million in China and $9.67 million in Japan.

August may be a notoriously slow month at the box office, but Warner Bros. has now delivered back-to-back strong performers. Last weekend The Meg topped all expectations and continued its strong global performance this weekend, while the new release of Crazy Rich Asians delivered an estimated $34 million in its first five days of release. Between the two films, WB secured the weekend's top two spots, and helped deliver the third straight August weekend this year to top the same weekend last year. Unfortunately, the weekend's two other new wide releases, Stx's Mile 22 and Sony's Alpha, weren't able to have such splashy debuts. With an estimated $34 million, Crazy Rich Asians topped industry expectations and came up just shy of Mojo's aggressive, pre-weekend forecast. The film is having a profound impact as the first Asian-led studio film to hit theaters since The Joy Luck Club 25 years ago and word...

Earlier this year, it was reported that mammoth movie star, Tom Cruise, was bound for the DC Extended Universe. Although, a lot’s changed since then.
The Batman‘s inching closer to a production start date and we’ve gotten our first official look at Aquaman and Shazam! Not to mention, the comic book titan’s rebranded their entire operation, hoping to distance itself from the catastrophic failure otherwise known as the Dceu – save for Wonder Woman, of course. Nonetheless, while practically everything about the realm has undergone some form of transformation, apparently, Tom Cruise is the one constant.
According to a blind item from Crazy Days & Nights, the three-time Academy Award nominee is the frontrunner to portray Hal Jordan in the 2020 superhero blockbuster, Green Lantern Corps. Or at least, he was. Originally published in March of this year, the website revealed the identity of the A-list actor and the associated picture earlier today.

This weekend gets off to an early start with the Wednesday release of the much-anticipated romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, the first Asian-led studio film to hit theaters since The Joy Luck Club. While Joy Luck Club didn't play in any more than 600 theaters during its run 25 years ago, Crazy Rich Asians will get its start in over 3,200 locations with plenty of buzz behind it.
Later in the week, STX will release what they hope is a franchise-starter in Mile 22 featuring Mark Wahlberg re-teaming with director Peter Berg, while Sony's Studio 8 will release Alpha.
Beginning with Crazy Rich Asians, the adaptation of Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name has been making headlines for some time now. It was a monstrous weekend thanks to Warner Bros.'s The Meg, which devoured everything in its path en route to a nearly $150 million global debut. As a result, the weekend box office was up 5.7% compared to last weekend and over 25% compared to last year, with the top twelve grossing over $132 million. It was also a strong weekend for Focus Features's release of Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman and Screen Gems's Slender Man even over-performed against expectations, though a disappointing CinemaScore for the latter is likely to lead to short-lived theatrical run. As already said, the #1 film at the weekend box office was WB's 70-foot shark The Meg. The film brought in $45.4 million domestically, nearly double BoxOfficeMojo's weekend forecast. Heading into the weekend, the most optimistic expectations were around $30 million, which puts into perspective what a massive performance this is. The debut gives director Jon Turteltaub the largest opening of his career,...

Since its debut at E3 2018 in June, “Fallout 76” has mystified some fans of Bethesda Game Studios’ post-apocalyptic role-playing series. It’s not a purely single-player affair like past entries, but also not an online game that’s solely focused on aggressive player vs. player combat. In Bethesda’s view, “Fallout 76” finds an ideal middle ground between them.
Players may not fully understand the scope or moment-to-moment feel of the action until the pre-release beta test launches in October, but the game’s creators continue to try and set the stage as best they can—and assuage any fears in the meantime.
That was true once again this weekend at Bethesda’s QuakeCon convention outside of Dallas, Texas, in which “Fallout 76” development leads discussed new elements of this fall’s survival-centric adventure and tried to answer some of the community’s top questions.

Emmy award-winning and three-time BAFTA nominated composer Inon Zur is creating the score for “Fallout 76,” publisher Bethesda tells Variety.
Zur has a long history with the “Fallout” franchise. He created music for the third and fourth major installments, the Obsidian Entertainment spinoff “Fallout: New Vegas,” and the turn-based tactical RPG spinoff “Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.”
Unlike previous entries in the series, “Fallout 76” features an online multiplayer component that allows the player to explore the Wasteland with up to three other people. Naturally, the game world is expanding to accommodate the population increase. Set in post-apocalyptic West Virginia, “Fallout 76” is reportedly four times the size of its predecessor, “Fallout 4.” Zur said the music follows the game’s footsteps in its vastness and grandeur.
“With inspiration from game director Todd Howard and close collaboration with audio director Mark Lampert, I weaved a sophisticated and emotional score that takes the player on a whole new journey,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shocked the industry with today’s announcement that a new category was being created for the Oscars: Outstanding achievement in popular film. The new category received instant blowback from film journalists, with many calling a best popular film category a desperate attempt at remaining relevant and to increase ratings for the Oscars telecast.
Part of the reason the decision to add a best popular film category is so frustrating is the fact that there are several other, arguably more important, categories the Academy should be honoring that don’t exist at the moment. From stunt coordinators to casting directors, several groups continue to be ignored for Academy Award consideration despite being instrumental to a film’s success.
For more on the Academy’s decision to add a best popular film category, read IndieWire’s Anne Thompson’s takedown of the new category here.

Bittersweet drama Ya Veremos (We’ll See) has posted the second-biggest opening weekend ever for a Mexican film in its home market, beating out Mission: Impossible — Fallout (in its second week), Christopher Robin and other studio fare in the process.
The film’s top-spot $3.9M ($73M Mexican Pesos) weekend haul was second in the all-time rankings behind 2013 box office sensation Instructions Not Included, the most successful Spanish-language film ever at the global box office, which raked in $45M stateside for Lionsgate’s Pantelion and $100M worldwide. Pantelion also has Ya Veremos stateside so will be hoping for a strong number over the Labor Day weekend.
The film’s four-day opening in Mexico saw it hit 2,380 screens and pull in 1.4M admissions.
Directed by Pitipol Ybarra (Pulling Strings) and starring Mauricio Ochmann, Fernanda Castillo, Erik Hayser and Emiliano Aramayo, the tear-jerker tells the story of a child who is dealing with...

There isn’t exactly a shortage these days of action movie stars who are approaching, or are actually over, 50, but the Mission: Impossible series sets itself up as a thrill ride among thrill rides. Much has already been made about Tom Cruise’s efforts at performing stunts, many of them a challenge at any age. Still, the real question is whether or not a franchise holds up after twenty years of sequels, whatever the age of the stars. Mission: Impossible – Fallout, as the name implies, revolves around dealing with the aftermath of the teams previous exploits, but also the fallout of a certain decision our man Hunt makes in the process of… well, dealing with that first fallout. We’re familiar with the players, and Hunt’s mission of the moment is getting nuclear material out of the hands of bad guys, but there are a lot of steps in that process.

FX Networks continues to stock up on the biggest movie titles on the market.
The cable network’s latest purchases are current box-office champion Mission Impossible: Fallout, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Deadpool 2, A Quiet Place, Hotel Transylvania 3, The Equilizer 2, as well as Skyscraper, Blockers, Pacific Rim Uprising, and Maze Runner: The Death Cure.
They represent all of the top-grossing movies of 2018 except for the Marvel and Pixar titles, which are not made available by Disney, Solo, which is part of Disney’s Turner Start Wars movie package deal, and Warner Bros. films that go to siblings TNT and TBS.
FX, whose movie deals also include streaming rights to make the films available on the network’s digital platforms, made the switch several years ago, opting to spend the bulk of its acquisition budget on theatrical films instead of off-network shows. “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” (Paramount) sailed to a surprisingly easy repeat #1 this weekend, dropping only 43 percent. Its $35 million gross was $10 million ahead of the modest opening of Disney’s latest live action remake, “Christopher Robin.”
That’s a terrific performance for the latest Tom Cruise franchise installment. Similar to earlier entries, this “Mission” is propelled by strong word of mouth and a likely multiple far better than most sequels that open to $50 million or higher.
Cruise at 56 is a decade younger than Harrison Ford in the last Indiana Jones film, “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” but unlike Ford, Cruise is even more central. An overwhelmingly positive response to the film on social media after initial viewings yielded a strong result. (Metascore: 86.)
How strong? It’s the best second weekend hold for a wide studio release since June’s 25 percent drop for “Book Club.” But that film opened to just $13.5 million, so it’s not really comparable.

Propelled by great reviews and apparently strong word-of-mouth, Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout“…uh, cruised to an easy 2nd weekend win at the box office. Within the last two decades, the “Mission: Impossible” films have promised audiences two certainties. The first: Tom Cruise will undoubtedly perform some sort of intense, life-threatening stunt. And the second, which may come as a surprise, the films will offer a feverishly constructed heist– like the ‘Fallout’ caper where the team breaks the villain out of jail–that grips audiences from beginning to end. While audiences and critics alike are still reeling from the experience of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” let’s take a look back at the formula of the film’s franchise.

Jeremy Renner has had an interesting 2018. You would think the star, who is a member of not one, but two, major franchises to have films out this year, would be rejoicing. However, Renner holds the unique distinction to be the one actor from the “Avengers” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises to not show up in either film this year. While “Avengers: Infinity War” earned over $2 billion and “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” begins its box office assault, Renner has to just watch from the sideline.

The Divide opens on January 13th, 2012 via Anchor Bay Films and is helmed by Xavier Gens (Hitman starring Timothy Olyphant, Frontier(s)) from the writing by Karl Mueller and Ron Sheean. In this graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller, nine strangers-all tenants of a New York high-rise apartment-escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building's bunker-like basement.
