*****,perfect 5 stars,A movie-based VG that is as fun as the movie!
PJS-53 July 1999
Sure most Movie-based VG's look & basically play like lame attempts to cash-in the movies popularity not this one,but this one does the perfect justice to a movie portrays the film very well the weapons were well useful & most of the foes were ACTUALLY from the movie & the stages look well from the movie & so many other things that make this true to the excellent movie sure the mild challenge factor can frustrate you but thats nothing a Game genie can't fix so if you wanna see am NES classic PLAY THIS!(sorry & the GB version of this is well good but not as good as this one) so if you can get this from funcoland get it very soon (if you have an NES) BYE!

Gremlins invading the NES
hellraiser77 June 2021
This is another one of my favorite licensed games and an honorable mention in favorite NES games.

"Gremlins" is one of my favorite films of all time along with the sequel in which this game was based on. When I heard there was going to be a game based on the second film I was just blown away, I would finally get to be able to fight Gremlins in the gaming world. There really aren't that many video games for the franchise, let alone any that are actually good, if there are there is the one for the "Atari 5200" based on the first film and thankfully this game.

The game was thankfully made in the right hands by one of my favorite video game companies "Sunsoft" that have plenty of quality license games.

I really love the graphics which feel right for this game, color, detail, design all done with effort and fine form. Really like they have cut scenes from the movie that are animated in NES form and look great as they are accurate. I love the character designs as they all look true in form from the main protagonist Gizmo who is cute as usual and of course those ugly but colorful Gremlins. I really like how each of them are not just true in stature as their each a little taller and bigger than Gizmo but all of them are colorfully unique.

From sub enemies like Gyro Gremlins, Skateboard Gremlins, Fire Shooting Gremlins, Jumping Gremlins, you name it, it's probably there. But also, the bosses whom are really huge like a Uzi Firing Gremlin and of course there is the very final boss that tops them all the leader Mohawk also known as the Spider Gremlin. I'll admit just like in the film that Gremlin made me a little nervous as he's the most dangerous of all as well as big as he almost covers the whole screen in the game. The whole game you can say is the David vs. Goliath motif only here you have a lot of Goliaths to take down, so you have your work cut out for you.

But I really like the background animation as well which really gives you the feeling of being in Gizmo's perspective of a world that is gigantic. How the everyday settings we take for granted can be the most wonderous things, and even everyday items can have more than one use.

The gameplay is also very goods as it uses a format that isn't utilized much, its format is slightly similar to the platform action in "Startropics" and the overhead action stages in "Blaster Master". I like you have an RPG element from the shops but also as you go though the stages and levels you gain a new weapon. Each weapon is a little stronger than the last one but of course always has its limitations. From a matchstick that can shoot out fireballs, each fireball has power but limited range. Another are the paperclips where you can throw as many as you want and go quick but little stopping power, of course the very best is the bow and arrow which they save for last. The whole strength and weakness element with the weapons gives the game a bit of a strategy element where you not just have to adjust to the new surroundings as you progress thought the levels but also to work with what you have.

But of course, one of the highlights of the game are the music, Sunsoft is no stranger to memorable game track and this game has some of the best in my book, a few of the tunes are favorites of mine "The Office", "Under Pressure", and "Gremlin Battle" those tunes are just so cool as they just sing Gremlin mischief and danger.

This game though does have a couple of green globs that slow the game on its track for me. "One is the level design which makes the game just a tad too trick for its own good. There are just a few too many pitfalls, spike pits, and other kinds of death obstacles. I never like that because it not just creates unnecessary difficulty but really cuts into the game's momentum. Though this is only in a few places of the levels, and you can get past the obstacles even if at times you might have to do it with cheep tactics with that balloon.

Which gets down to my next problem which is the same problem the game "Clash at Demon Head" had where the shops been a little too far between, let alone you can only buy just one item when there around. I know that you can't have shops around too much because that would make the game too easy, let alone the game's not that long but still I feel they could have put the shop at least twice in the stages which wouldn't of hurt as we'd be able to get another item vitally needed.

So, if you're a fan of the "Gremlins" franchise or just of vintage licensed video games then this is another game to add in the collection or worth trying. It's big fun and a big adventure for the big and the small.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.

So much more awful than I remember

Warning: Spoilers
I first saw this as a kid and liked it. I watched it again for the 2nd time and I had forgotten how awful it is. Product placement and stopping the film in the middle to drop in a lame, contrived cameo by Paul Hogan. I love Steven Spielberg but this one was just a big stinker. Everything that made the original movie so great, was gone here. They definitely sold put for a bigger budget and more money

For submissive only ! (videogame)

Do you like dark creatures? Being beaten? Crushed? Wounded by piles? Well, this game is for you!

I played it on Gameboy and honestly, the difficulty level is just too hard! Gizmo has only 5 hearts and you must guide him into 5 endless level, full of void, sticking ground, etc... Each Gizmo step becomes a pain and for sure, the moment when he turns invisible in the maze is just impossible.

It's a pity because the graphics are really well done (for a GB)... Maybe you think: well, he's a bad player! so OK try it and play (a few minutes) BUT don't complain if your throw your GB against the wall!
