Reading Cat: [coincidentally finds the sheet music to the 'Pied Piper Overture'] Hubba-hubba. Why didn't I get hep to this before?

The cat concerto
Saw 'Hep Cat Symphony' as a big fan of animation, an even bigger fan of music (especially classical and opera) and as someone that appreciates the uneven but worthwhile Noveltoons series of cartoons from Famous Studios. The plot is one that was done a lot in animation, especially with Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes, and with mixed success. Part of me did suspect that 'Hep Cat Symphony' would be a cartoon with great animation and music but with a lot of predictability and not enough laughs.
Which when watching it was pretty much what 'Hep Cat Symphony' essentially was. It is definitely watchable and there is enough to show that music and jazz gel very well together (proven also in for example Disney's 'Music Land') while also being an appropriate odd couple and that both styles work incredibly well in animation. As far as the Noveltoons series goes, 'Hep Cat Symphony' is neither one of the best or worst, but other cartoons did this very familiar premise much better. With more inspiration, energy and wit.
The best thing about it is the music. Which is expectedly outstanding, very lushly orchestrated and immensely characterful. Providing the energy that was not there enough in the story. No problems can be had with the animation, which is vibrant and meticulously detailed throughout. The attention to detail in the backgrounds is so rich and looks so lovely.
Also brilliant is the wildly manic climax which is where 'Hep Cat Symphony' is at its funniest. The cat character does amuse and his reactions are fun and well animated.
It is a shame that the story and the material in general weren't stronger. The story did have some nice tension here and there, but the conflict tended to be rather predictable due to being very little different to most cartoons that had the same or a similar premise. It would have helped if the mice were slightly more compelling characters, they were cute and had some mildly amusing moments but their personalities are bland compared to the cat's, and if the back and forth had more variety, as it did start to get repetitive before coming to life in the climax.
'Hep Cat Symphony' does have amusing moments but there is little that is hilarious and even littler that is inspired or original until the climax. Wouldn't have said no too to more gags, which did feel not enough for a while and as said the variety is missing.
Altogether, watchable but not great. 5/10
