Little Lulu and the magician
TheLittleSongbird13 February 2017
The 26 Little Lulu cartoons made during 1944-1948 (and the two made in the early 60s) were uneven (individually and the series as a general overview) but watchable.

'Magica-Lulu' may be partly derivative of 'Hullaba Lulu', the second Little Lulu cartoon and one of her better ones. In case anybody's wondering why, similar plot-line except with magic tricks rather than circus tricks with Little Lulu exposing them as fake. The magician and ringmaster characters look quite similar too. With that being said, 'Magica-Lulu' is also to me one of the better cartoons and hugely improved over one of Little Lulu's worst 'Lulu's Birthday Party'.

It is a shame that although the animation style had refined a little from around 'Lulu in Hollywood', it's somewhat rough here and needed more smoothness, the colour is more vibrant generally though. The story is slight and it is when Little Lulu properly interacts with the magician when it comes to life.

Replacing Sammy Timberg, Winston Sharples' music score is luscious and characterful. The theme song is as catchy as ever.

Little Lulu is more engaging this time round than in 'Lulu's Birthday Party', and her conflict with the magician and her attempts in foiling him make for very funny and sometimes hilarious entertainment, both this and 'Hullaba-Lulu' are two of the funnier Little Lulu cartoons. The cartoon goes at a quick pace and mostly does not struggle with having enough content to last the whole duration like some Little Lulu cartoons have. The voice work is good.

On the whole, a good Little Lulu cartoon and one of the better ones. 8/10 Bethany Cox
