While not a massive fan of the Herman and Katnip cartoons, and they won't appeal to everyone, none of them are abominations. Mouseum has enough to make it watchable, but there are better and funnier in the series.
As with all Herman and Katnip cartoons, the music from the always great Winston Sharples is the highlight, one of the best scores of a mid-50s Herman and Katnip cartoon, and the one component that's consistently outstanding here. It's very beautifully orchestrated and never loses energy even when the cartoon doesn't have quite as much; it matches the action very well and adds a lot too. That theme tune is also infectious. The animation is also fine, it's very lush and colourful on the whole, a lot of care and detail went into it evidently and apart from some less than smooth drawing in places the characters move naturally.
The conflict between Herman and Katnip is convincing, the partnership makes sense, Herman nicely carries the cartoon with his cunning resourcefulness, though his actions are predictable, and Katnip is amusing, appropriately dim-witted and convinces as a threat, I couldn't help feeling sorry for him too. The nephews are sweet, poignant characters though they are not in the cartoon much. The voice acting is solid mostly though everybody only has a couple of lines each, Mae Questel is dependably sweet, Arnold Stang is suitably zany and Sid Raymond does a typically fine job as Katnip.
Mouseum's flaws are ones that a vast majority of the Herman and Katnip cartoons share. By Herman and Katnip and general cartoon standards, Mouseum is still very formulaic, though the pacing is mostly efficient, and the dialogue is something heard so often with Herman and Katnip one can practically recite it. Mouseum is not very funny either, it's occasionally amusing but often brutal to the point of being cruel, especially the wheels for knives gag and the ending, which ties with the ending of Mice Meeting You as the most mean-spirited ending in a Herman and Katnip cartoon Overall, definitely watchable but not great, not one of the better Herman and Katnip cartoons. 6/10 Bethany Cox
