November is the month of thankfulness, so why not be thankful for some great independent cinema?
As the end of the year approaches, new films arrive in theaters at a rapid pace with big blockbusters, seasonal holiday films, and major Oscar contenders all vying for those juicy November and December slots. This month alone, some highly anticipated films include “American Fiction,” “Dream Scenario,” “Leave the World Behind,” “May December,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “Napoleon,” and the Disney Film “Wish.” On streaming, new movies skew towards the seasonal holiday variet with mountains of Christmas rom-coms coming to Netflix for you to enjoy and/or dread. But there’s still plenty of classic films arriving on platforms this November — including great independent movies that have released as recently as 2014 and as far back as 1969.

While many at the Cfda Fashion Awards decided to dress up in black, Lola Tung went with a nude look.
The Summer I Turned Pretty actress didn’t actually go in the nude, but her Balmain dress definitely gave the illusion of it. Tung wore a crystal see-through dress with nude coverings underneath and to complete the full look, she wore nude heels and crystal dangling earrings.
Though the dress looks complicated to wear, Tung told Access Hollywood that “it was pretty easy to get into,” as it had a zipper running down the back of it.
“It’s Balmain, and I’m just thrilled to be in it and [look] like a little chandelier essentially,” she said.

The dilemma of Team Conrad (Christopher Briney) or Team Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) is one that fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty know all too well. As the love triangle in the series thickens, viewers are eager to know which side Lola Tung, who portrays the conflicted Isabel “Belly” Conklin, is on.
But if you expect a straightforward answer from Tung, you might be surprised. Not only has the actor made her stance clear, but her consistency in championing her character, Belly, offers a nuanced take on the show’s tangled relationships.
Lola Tung isn’t necessarily Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah
For Tung, it’s a question as old as the love triangle trope: Conrad or Jeremiah? The sibling rivalry in The Summer I Turned Pretty adds an irresistible layer of drama to the story. But when confronted about her character’s romantic affiliations, Tung provided her usual response.

Just as music is a big part of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the Amazon Prime Video original series’ star, Lola Tung, used it to get into character. What the actor listened to for a fast way to get into Isabel “Belly” Conklin’s “headspace” and what she looked for in songs.

Kim Petras’s “You Can’t Do Better” might’ve blared through the speakers as Belly sang along on the way to Cousins with her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), and mother Laurel (Jackie Chung) in the Tsitp premiere episode. However, the track may not have made the cut for season 2 based on Tung’s description of her own Belly playlist that helped her get into character.
“It was a lot of slightly more emotional songs — songs that felt nostalgic,” she told The New York Times.

A Compassionate Spy (Steve James)
See an exclusive clip above.
The latest film from acclaimed documentarian Steve James, A Compassionate Spy, comes with a fascinating subject: the spy who leaked nuclear information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union, therefore ensuring that America could not establish a nuclear monopoly on the world. It’s easy to see why James would be drawn to the spy, Theodore “Ted” Hall, and his wife Joan as he has often been interested in using individuals as the framework to explore larger societal issues. Utilizing a hybrid of recreations, archival footage, and modern-day interviews, James crafts a portrait of a man, a relationship, and the sheer weight of the decision to betray your country to save the world.

Director X knows a thing or two about music videos. From working under Hype Williams on the set of the 1998 classic movie “Belly,” to directing music videos for hip-hop heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar and Drake, the visual artist — whose real name is Julien Christian Lutz — has been delivering outstanding visuals for three decades and counting.
Today, Lutz’s production company Fela teams up with Insight Production in announcing the launch of a new series dubbed “Video Star.” The show will explore the behind-the-scenes process and cultural impact of the most groundbreaking, innovative music videos dating back to the ’70s. It will additionally spotlight videos of the ’90s (when seven-figure budgets were introduced) leading up to modern-day examples, including some of Director X’s own innovative creations.

For our latest dive into recent books on or related to cinema, we’re spending time with some icons––fictional (James Bond) and non. Let’s start with 50 color palettes and one beautifully unique new text.
Colors of Film: The Story of Cinema in 50 Palettes by Charles Bramesco (Frances Lincoln)
Colors of Film is an engrossing study of how filmmakers utilize color in complex, ingenious, emotionally impactful ways. Some of these examples (e.g. the red jacket in Schindler’s List) have inspired much discourse. What makes this book––by the always-entertaining and -intelligent critic Charles Bramesco––so special is its focus on less-obvious films. A noteworthy case: Hype Williams’ Belly and its “flights of stylistic fancy.” During its hyper-stylized opening, as gangsters Buns and Sin “prowl through the dance floor, ceiling-mounted blacklights make the men look extraterrestrial, their eyeballs glowstick-turquoise against deeper blue skin.” Other entries focus on everything...

Greetings, friends. If you're someone who returns to this sporadic column seeking Blu-ray info, I want to thank you. You're swell! And as always, I will continue to bring you the latest in Blu-rays. This week has one of the best movies of 2021: Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." But wait, there's more! There's a 4K release of Hype Williams' amazing cult classic "Belly," Disney's recent animated flick "Strange World," Elvis fighting a mummy in "Bubba Ho-Tep," and of course, the "Black Panther" sequel "Wakanda Forever." That's a fine line-up if you ask me.
The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg has been talking about making a movie about his childhood for decades, and he finally got around to it with "The Fabelmans." But this isn't hagiography, or Spielberg talking about what a talented kid he was (even though he was). Instead, this is Spielberg grappling with what is arguably the most persistent...

HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” just ended its run and has quickly become one of the best series to arrive in 2021. You can’t discount lead actress Kate Winslet’s effect on that verdict, as she is the primary reason the drama is as hard-hitting and enjoyable as it is. And according to a new interview with the New York Times, Winslet thinks part of the reason why people are relating so much to her character of Mare in the series is because the actress is playing her as a real woman, not a Hollywood version of what a middle-aged person would look like.

British singer Mahalia and Rico Nasty have teamed up for a new song, “Jealous.”
“Jealous” boasts a booming beat that provides the perfect anchor for Mahalia and Rico Nasty to unspool some slick kiss-off bars with deceptively sweet vocal performances. “Hm, I’m going crazy,” Mahalia sings on the hook. “Think you know me but you never made me/Hm, cannot play me/I’ve been bad from when I was a baby.”

Friday, Jan. 22 Palm Springs Film Festival will Honor Gary Oldman with Chairman Award
The Palm Springs International Film Awards has announced that Gary Oldman will be the recipient of the Chairman’s Award for his performance in “Mank.”
“Gary Oldman gives another mesmerizing performance as Herman J. Mankiewicz in David Fincher’s “Mank.” Oldman plays the role to perfection as the films follow the screenwriter’s journey while is co-writing the script for Citizen Kane,” said Harold Matzner. “We are delighted to recognize one of this generation’s greatest actors, Gary Oldman with this year’s Chairman’s Award.”
Oldman, who has starred in “The Darkest Hour” and won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill, was previously honored at the festival with the Desert Palm Achievement Award in 2018 and International Star Award in 2012.
In “Mank,” (streaming on Netflix) 1930s Hollywood is reevaluated through the eyes of scathing wit and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J.

As the weather gets hotter and the film industry continues to face an uncertain future, one thing is crystal clear: There will be plenty of new movies to watch this summer — good ones, in fact — but there isn’t going to be a Summer Movie Season. There isn’t going to be a major blockbuster that makes you feel like a kid again (unless “Tenet” surprises); there isn’t going to be a silly comedy that you’ll associate with the smell of artificial popcorn butter for the rest of your life; there isn’t going to be a small movie with mass appeal that plays in arthouse circuit until the end of August. And though it’s still only the start of May, we can already tell that we’re going to miss the cancelled 2020 Summer Movie Season more than we ever would have guessed.
So we decided to...

When director Guillermo Del Toro asks for quarantine entertainment recommendations, his famous friends sure don’t disappoint.
Del Toro took to Twitter Monday for help in passing the time during the pandemic. “What are you reading, what are you watching, what are you listening to, and how many days have you been indoors?,” Del Toro posted Monday morning.
Del Toro added that he has “been indoors for over a month… self-imposed. I have gone out only for primary needs: food, supplies, etc., and I have been mostly rewatching and re-reading.”
Among the content Del Toro said he was revisiting were several films by director Mitchell Leisen, including “Death Takes a Holiday” and “Easy Living.” For literature, Del Toro said he’s re-reading “The Devils of Loudon,” a thriller by dystopian author Aldous Huxley, calling it “incredibly pertinent to what we are going through and how autonomy can be destroyed in times of crisis.

When “Old Town Road” rapper Lil Nas X asked Bradley and Pablo to direct his video for “Rodeo,” the Los Angeles directors were ecstatic. The duo had directed music videos for Rosalía, Mark Ronson, and Charli Xcx, but they had never been approached with an idea as bonkers as this: a hybrid vampire-Matrix plot.

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I bring back a couple of golden oldies from the show’s past. We took this week off from recording to enjoy a long, gluttonous holiday weekend. But that doesn’t mean we’d leave you without something to listen to. And so, from the Ayt vaults (which you can find here, if you’d like to explore our old episodes), I’ve put together a crime movie double feature: Mathieu Kassovitz‘ scorching, energetic masterpiece from 1995, “La Haine” and Hype Williams‘ “Belly,” from 1998, a misunderstood movie with insanely beautiful visuals that distills the urban crime thriller into a hallucinogenic orgy of experiential moments and sequences.

6.7 Thanksgiving
This uneven effort from Arrow crams about every holiday episode trope it can into 44 minutes. Turkey puns, a head-tilting cameo, and two highly anticipated developments. Happy sweeps, folks! Ultimately, the positives like Thea's return and seeing Oliver back in the hood were good enough to keep things moving, and holiday episodes are graded on a curve, right?
Oliver was taken down a peg. Everything about his arrest was pretty bogus, from his perp walk occurring during a Thanksgiving food drive, to the iPad they used to scan his fingerprints. Would the scrum of reporters ever be treated to both the arrest and booking? Absolutely not.

Chyna lip-synced a little bit in the video, in addition to caressing her curves and licking her lips. Towards the end of the video, Chyna gave a smirk and an eye-roll as Belly rapped, "You were seduced by her sin / Don't let Lucifer in /She took you for everything / You let her do it again." Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Inspired by Baby Groot’s “Mr. Blue Sky” dance sequence at the beginning of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” what movie has the best opening credits sequence?
April Wolfe (@awolfeful), La Weekly
Hands down, it’s R.W. Fassbinder’s “The Marriage of Maria Braun.” I watch the opening sequence at least three times a year and show it to every filmmaker I can. I love any film that begins with a bang, and this one does quite literally: We open up on an explosion that rips out a hunk of brick wall, exposing a German couple in the middle of a rushed marriage ceremony.
