I'm interested in the work of Nick Orleans, though I prefer his vintage features compared to his disappointing releases of recent years. This early Adam & Eve effort is the epitome of that label's welcome tradition of Romantic/Couples product, and its dreamy, abstract mood is quite a contrast to the more realistic (and tedious) gonzo crap that constitutes porn two decades later.
Watching videos released around the beginning of this century is quite instructive and entertaining, because they lack the pedestal (often artificial) afforded Golden Age films from 20 or so years earlier, and are generally superior to both current junk and also the assembly-line '80s into '90s shot-on-video silly quickies.
Orleans' simple premise has Mark Davis and three beauties, all dressed and styled like real, well-groomed people (rather than porn actors) planning the drastic renovation and development of a beautiful, pristine garden. Mark brings along not architectural drawings but a tiny case, which contains a diary written perhaps 100 years ago by a woman about her "Garden of Earthly Delights".
Lolling on some outdoor steps, the cast reads the entries and fantasize about the wonderful beauty (and sex) of bygone eras at this location. This is the springboard for the kind of escapism and idealized content that I associate with Adam & Eve, and gives their videos (not all, but most) a timeless quality. The nostalgic theme has extra resonance viewed some 20 years later, since "progress" has decimated Adult Entertainment content, just as one envisions bulldozers about to despoil this fantasy garden.
First fantasy has the lead protagonists appearing as the historical figures, a nice touch. Cast is expanded with subsequent illustrated passages from the journal, and a largely unfamiliar cast of femmes (of which Asia Carrera, Jill Kelly and Shayla LaVeaux stand out as faces we remember) excel in the explicit sex scenes.
